If you guys don’t mind in the comments, remind me to buy some duct tape to hold my camera in place for these videos, I am almost out. Mrs. Failure to Prepare and I discussed some “Get Home Bag” tarp options, I found a 10’ x 10’ tarp, called the ODSE rain fly hammock tent tarp. What I liked about it, mainly was the price of $24.99 and what it came with. One side appeared to be reflective, which if that is the case, would be helpful in retaining heat. It also comes with six stakes and six guidelines, and tie off loops around the tarp. We are supposed to possibly get some snow or rain tomorrow, so I am going to leave it up in the weather just to see how it does. I am going to try a couple of different configurations of this tent, and video them for you to check out. The Second setup I will use is what some people call the A-frame, it has no floor, and shelters in two directions from rain and the wind, you can secure it using trees, or other objects, but I choose to simulate not have these options and used trekking poles instead. One thing I also like about this setup is you can have a small fire that will radiate heat into the tarp. I am not going to rate this tarp at this time, because I currently have no experience using it, other than simple setup. The batteries have held charges this entire time, and I have not had to replace any of the components or batteries on six sensors I have installed around the house. Here is a quick review of a portable solar charger, I think I have had this thing for maybe two years? So far so good! After breaking down my Kelty 1 Person from the previous video, I decided to go ahead and break out my solar panel, and charge my two Goal Zero lamps, and my two red lens headlamps, why two of each, one for myself and one for Mrs. Failure to Prepare, redundancies folks, one is none and two is one. Anyway, I ran this thing from around sun-up until the current time, which is about 1327 hours, during that time I charged the two Goal Zero lights and one headlamp, the last headlamp is charging as we speak. What I like about this charger, and what caused me to buy it, it will fold into a pretty compact lightweight package, or you can strap it to the back of your ruck, and charge things while on the move. So while complaining on the move, “oh crap oh crap, here come the commies!” you can charge your cell phone to help them track you, or you headlamps or whatever. Here is the continued test of my new Kelty 1 person field tent, with hitting the sack, waking up, and making some coffee with a couple of very special surprise guests, that I wasn’t expecting, but was glad to see, they both consented to be videoed by the way. I will say that the setup and breakdown were pretty straightforward and pretty easy, I didn’t use the guy lines, since the wind was very mild Friday night and Saturday morning. I think the temps Friday during setup, was around 47 degrees, and once the sun dipped down, we had a low of about 31 degrees, which is just below freezing. I was able to find the specifications on the two-person tent, so we can now compare it with the one person that I used in this video. A couple of side comments, the tent did not stink, as most new things do, so it was not hard to get to sleep. One thing I will say, is when getting in and out of these tents, watch the doors, they seemed to be magnetized then glued to my legs and feet, each time I got in an out of the tent, I am thinking over time this could maybe damage a zipper if you are not careful; this was more of aggravation then anything. I also did not catch the tent on fire making coffee, or the two surprise guests either, which I am very thankful for, since my guests are fine, and I didn’t want to test the fire of “Meets or exceed CPAI-84 Flammability standard” Which I think could be a rating California came up with, to measure Mrs. Pelosi’s bowel movement, and hazardous flammability factors. I bought two new more subdued backpacking tents, to replace my Alps Mountaineering 1.5 Mystique tents, which I donated to the local homeless shelter. I had no issues with my Alps tents, other than they were bright frigging orange! Anyway, after watching a few reviews, I settled on two new tents, which both pretty much mirror each other in design, except that one is a two-person, and the one I will setup is a one-person tent, which I now have in my get home ruck. I will show some of Kelty's stats on both tents and will video the setup of the one-person tent in my backyard. This will be a first time setup, so we will see how it goes. In this episode, we briefly follow-up, with my contact of 4Patriots, regarding the status of my refund for the set of Sun Kettles I sent back. Since we had to pay for shipping on the return, via UPS, we knew that the return shipment had been received by 4 Patriots, however, a few days went by and nothing. I called the 4Patriots Customer Service at 1-800-304-4202. It didn’t appear they were in a hurry to refund my money, due to the arrival notification from UPS, I believe we waited 4-6 days following the return to call 4 Patriots to ask what was up. I spoke with a lady, I think her name was Wanda? Anyway, I thought she was outstanding! She was very nice and kept us on the phone until she verified our refund was sent. She had to place us on hold a couple of times, once to verify the products were returned, and again to deal with the refund processing. Either way, I think the customer service, at least the lady I dealt with was great! So out of a score of 10, 10 being the best, I would like to give Wanda at 4 Patriots a Failure to Prepare 10 out of 10. Also, I would like to add that I was able to sell some food stamps, and I sold some blood at the local blood bank and was able to buy a new webcam and microphone, so this video is also a test for those items as well, please let me know if the sound and video quality are now a little better, we are still pretty ghetto here at Failure to Prepare, but it is what it is! I wanted to put my get home bag/bug-out bag, and it’s attached gear to the test. It’s always a good idea to have faith in your gear, and that it will take care of you when you need it most. You can’t pick your weather, or the time of day you might need to use your get home/bug out bag. So I picked last night (Friday), clear skies, full moon illumination (which means colder temps as opposed to overcast skies), setup temp was approximately 43 degrees, dropping down to overnight/next morning temps of approximately 25 degrees. So it was a pretty cold night overall in my 3 season tent. I will give a description of the major gear, and if you are interested, links to this gear, I will be changing up my tent though, to something a little more subdued, that doesn’t draw so much attention or look like a lighthouse beacon when you turn a light on inside it. I will probably have 4-5 follow-on videos, from this one overnighter, which will be released weekly following this video, I apologize in advance about the lighting and sound during these videos.
