The US airline regulator has ordered the grounding of some Boeing 737 Max 9 jets after a section of the fuselage fell off in mid-air during an Alaska Airlines flight. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the inspections would affect 171 planes. The Alaska Airlines flight from Portland, Oregon to Ontario, California, was carrying 177 passengers and crew. It had reached 16,000ft when the section of the hull fell away causing the depressurisation of the cabin. The aircraft made an emergency descent and landed safely back in Portland. Images taken by people on the flight showed a large hole in the fuselage next to passenger seats. There were no reports of any injuries. Great white sharks have been seen off the beaches in South Africa's coastal city of Cape Town for the first time in more than four years. Some places, like coastal areas in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province, seek to tackle the danger by using nets and baited hooks to kill sharks, but this also harms other sea life, such as dolphins and turtles. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has said it strongly encourages non-lethal approaches to addressing the risk from sharks. Houthi rebels in Yemen have been attacking commercial shipping in the Red Sea and they have vowed to continue targeting vessels that they consider linked to Israel. Almost 15% of global trade passes through the Bab al-Mandab strait, and there are fears that fuel prices will rise and supply chains will be disrupted. Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has been freed on parole from a South African jail, nearly 11 years after murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Officials confirmed Pistorius was "at home" on Friday morning, having served half of his more than 13-year sentence. Pistorius, now 37, shot Ms Steenkamp multiple times in 2013 through a door. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has outlined proposals for the future governance of Gaza once the war between Israel and Hamas is over. There would, he said, be limited Palestinian rule in the territory. Hamas would no longer control Gaza and Israel would retain overall security control, he added. Rescuers in Japan have been racing against time in their search for survivors of a New Year's earthquake, as a critical three day window has now closed. Dozens of people were killed when a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the remote Noto peninsula on Monday at 16:10 local time (07:10GMT). Many people are thought to be trapped under their collapsed homes - mostly in the towns of Suzu and Wajima. After 72 hours, the chances of finding people alive drops substantially. Rescue efforts continue in Japan after at least 64 people were killed in a powerful earthquake that hit the country on New Year's Day. One in five commercial ships are now avoiding the Red Sea because of the threat of attack, according to the International Chamber of Shipping. Several firms - including two of the world’s biggest - have paused shipments through the route after vessels were attacked by Houthi rebels in Yemen. At least 103 people have been killed by two bomb explosions near the tomb of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani on the fourth anniversary of his assassination by the US, Iran's state media report. Passengers on board the passenger jet recorded their miracle escape from death after a horrific collision on the runway of Haneda airport in Tokyo. The JAL Airbus was engulfed in flames as it landed after colliding with a small coastguard plane. All 379 passengers and 12 crew on board the airliner survived the disaster. 5 people on the coastguard plane died in the accident. The small plane had been en route to deliver aid to victims of Japan’s earthquake in the country’s Nota peninsula. Shortly after the passenger jet was evacuated it was overcome by fire. Airbus has said its experts will assist with the investigation into the Japan Airlines jet crash at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. A Japan Airlines Airbus A350 turned into a fireball after it collided with a coastguard plane as it landed on Tuesday. Five of the six people on board the smaller aircraft died. All 379 passengers and crew of the Japan Airlines flight were evacuated before the plane became engulfed in flames, with 14 people receiving minor injuries. The coastguard aircraft was taking emergency supplies to help rescue efforts after Monday's earthquake in central Japan.
