Depression is not a respecter of persons; it impacts people of all different backgrounds and in all kinds of circumstances. However, there are some biological contributors to depression. You likely remember the slogan, “Just say no to drugs.” It seems simple enough. The message that drugs are destructive is one that most would agree with. Few would argue against the reality that opioid use has terrifying consequences, yet demand for the product continues to grow. Great plagues have ravaged populations throughout man's history. These plagues afflict rich and poor alike--they do not discriminate. One study set the cost of depression and anxiety to Canada at nearly $50 billion annually. The same report indicated as many as one in four Canadians unable to work due to their symptoms. Depression serves as an underreported and underrated plague upon modern society. How has this come to be?

Do you live in a country where you are free to express an opinion, however politely, that deviates from the prevailing view promoted by society, media or government? Present reality however points to that freedom being only a perception. We often think that wide-scale censorship, which can include punishment, is only the preserve of dictatorships or nations ruled by oppressive regimes. Today renown experts in their field are being humiliated and cancelled if they do not accept popular activist opinion, even if that opinion is wrong. The inquisition of the medieval period was a brutal time, when a religious organization went to brutal lengths to persecute any people they deemed not to be in agreement with their own world view. Any disagreement with the church was seen as heresy and was suppressed through torture, executions and any other methods available. The organized suppression of truth is once again rearing its ugly head. This Modern Inquisition is more commonly referred to as cancel culture. On April 25, 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick published a paper that would forever alter our understanding of life and give cause to question leading theories on how we came into existence. Their research gave a small glimpse into the information powerhouse known as DNA. DNA is the molecule responsible for carrying the information needed to build all of the proteins needed to make life possible. This marvel points to an intelligent Creator. The Internet and social media are here to stay, at least for the immediate future. And not everything about them is bad. Communication via the Internet and social media can be very helpful in times of crisis. And what parent doesn’t want to keep up with his or her children and grandchildren, if they don’t live close by? But there are significant downsides to these new technologies and platforms, so here are some suggestions on how to respond to the dangers. Hamas terrorists invaded the state of Israel, killing civilians, beheading babies and children, raping women, and taking hostages to use as bargaining chips and human shields. They even used the cell phones of victims to send execution videos back to the victims’ contacts and families. Much of the world was shocked by such barbarity. Sadly, too many ghoulishly cheered and protested on behalf of the terrorists, just as they did on 9/11. What will happen to Israel? Do you remember when you believed in Santa Claus? Or the Easter bunny? Why did we fall for the lies? It’s because we rely upon the information given to us by others as being true and accurate. Here's the challenge: How do we know that the information being presented to us is true?

A June 15, 2023, Fraser Institute article reported that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent the following tweet: “We’re seeing more and more of these fires because of climate change.” It is unhelpful to make or report public statements which are in fact inaccurate. Our society now more than ever needs to ensure the statements that are made are in fact correct. A loss of trust in media or in leadership is not beneficial for any society.

Media of all stripes label us as consumers, an apt description. It seems we are consumed with consuming! Does a person's life really consist in the abundance of his possessions? What is really of value in life?

Would you consider yourself a proud person? Do you take pride in your achievements or are you proud for other reasons? Do you parade your pride?

Some see it as essential to maintaining stability in a rapidly changing world; while others view it as a senseless anchor, holding back the tide of progression. Which is it? Is tradition important?

Do you have good self-esteem? Do you have good self-control? If you were posed the question as to which of the two is most important in life, what kind of response would you give?

Does the Hippocratic Oath--taken by medical graduates as they begin their roles as physicians--still matter? While young doctors in various medical schools still take this oath, governments across the Western world are passing legislation that would permit, and in some cases require, a doctor to administer treatment with the intention of ending a life? Such laws allow or force medical staff to expand their services of assisting the sick to recover, to assisting in the killing of a person. We can dress up this new role for health professionals with all manner of softer phraseology but do we as a society know how this will change our attitudes to care for the chronically ill, the elderly and others faced with severe medical situations?
