Sukkah Chapter 5 Mishna 6 | Uncovering the Kohanim's Secret To Inclusivity!
Unlocking the Secrets of Inclusivity: How the Kohanim Took Painstaking Efforts To Include Everyone
Mishna Sukkah Succah Mishnayis Mishnah Mishnayit Perek 5 Chapter 5 Mishna Mishneh 6
In the times of the Beis Hamikdosh, there were 24 groups of Kohanim. Every week there was a different group serving there. During the festival of Sukkos, all 24 groups served at the same time in the Beis Hamikdosh.
However, the number of bulls offered decreased each day from 13 on the first day to 7 on the seventh day.
To ensure that all groups had a fair chance to participate, the Mishna explains how the mussaf offerings were divided among all the groups each day. The offerings included 2 rams, 1 he-goat, and 14 lambs, which remained the same each day as well as the Bulls which decreased each day.
The Mishna describes how the number of lambs offered by each group changed each day to ensure that all 14 lambs were offered, even as the total number of offerings decreased.
The groups took turns offering the bulls 2 or 3 times during the seven days to make things as fair as possible for everyone to participate.
On the eighth day because there were so few offerings compared to the previous days, they returned to the lottery system to determine which group would offer the offerings like they did for the other festivals.

Mishna Sukkah Chapter 5 Mishnah 8 | Transformation From Heretic to Hero by the Lubavitcher Rebbe
From Heretic to Hero: Unveiling the Miraculous Transformation of Miriam Bas Bilga by the Lubavitcher Rebbe
In this video, we learned about the distribution of Showbread in the Holy Temple and the practices of the Kohanim.
When there is a day between Shabbos and Yomtov, the group staying back takes 2 loaves of bread, while the group with the fixed week of service takes 10 loaves.
Throughout the rest of the year, both groups take 6 loaves. But Rabbi Yehuda argues and says 7 for the entering group and 5 for the leaving group. The entering group distributes their bread in the North, which was the more important section in the Ezras Kohanim, symbolizing their role in slaughtering holy offerings, while the leaving group distributes theirs in the South, indicating the completion of their service.
The Bilga family always shechts in the South and faces additional restrictions, such as the locking of their shechting ring and the blocking of access to the knives.
And the Rebbe comes along and turns this Mishna right around against the way the rest of the world understands Miriam Bus Bilga.
Then in the Rebbe’s sicha we learned how Miriam bas Bilga's story highlights that despite her outward choices, the essence of her soul was still connected to Hashem. This connection became evident when she cried out to the Mizbeach, saying, "Lucas, Lucas, why do you destroy the money of Israel and not help them in times of trouble?"
Her heartfelt plea revealed her deep-rooted connection to Hashem and her genuine concern for her fellow Jews, despite her checkered past. This serves as a reminder of the teachings "Woe to the wicked and woe to his neighbour" and "good for the righteous and good for his neighbour."
You and I need to become the "tzadik" by becoming an example and through sincere and heartfelt communication. When we speak to others with empathy and understanding, our words can touch their hearts and potentially transform their lives. We have the ability to make those who may not be observant our "neighbour" by guiding them towards a path of Torah and Mitzvot through genuine discussion and connection.

Mishna Sukkah Chapter 5 Mishna 2 | 4 Courageous Kohanim's Life Changing Message
Preparing for Success: Four Young Kohanim During Simchas Beis Hashoeva
Mishna Sukkah Succah Mishnayis Mishnah Mishnayit Perek 5 Chapter 5 Mishna Mishneh 2
- At the conclusion of the 1st day of Yomtov of Sukkas the Kohanim and Leviyim would go down to the Ezras Nahsim and would make a big rectification there.
- They would surround the Ezras Nashim with balconies where the women would sit up high and the men would be down below to watch the celebrations so they wouldn’t come to lightheadedness or frivolity.
- There were several candelabras made out of gold set up in the Ezras Nashim. Each one had four bowls of oil at the top with four ladders leading to them.
- 4 young Kohanim would carry between them 120 logs of oil each one of the 4 holding 30 logs which is 10.35 litres per Kohen. And they would climb up the ladders to fill these 4 bowls on each of the candelabras.
- There is an amazing message of the preparations done here as well as the mighty strength of those Kohanim and what it means to us today in our lives.

Mishna Sukkah Chapter 5 Mishna 1 The Joy of Beis Hashoeva: Why You Haven't Experienced True Joy Yet
Flute Blowing in the Beis Hamikdash: The Ultimate Sukkot Celebration
Mishna Sukkah Succah Mishnayis Mishnah Mishnayit Perek 5 Chapter 5 Mishna Mishneh 1
The flute was blown for 5 or 6 days during the celebrations of Beis Hashoeva, which was the place where they rejoiced for the water pouring ceremony over the altar in the Beis Hamikdash in the Women’s court.
The blowing of the flute did not override Shabbos or Yomtov and was blown for 6 days if the first day of Yomtov fell on Shabbos and 5 days if it fell during the week.
The Beis Hashoeva was the name of the place they organised to rejoice in and they fixed up many things there for the celebration of the water drawing.
It was said that anyone who didn't see the Joy of the Beis Hashoeva has not seen joy in his lifetime. And it was this simcha that brought people to reach Ruach Hakodesh.
- The flute is blown for either 5 or 6 days. This refers to the flute that was blown throughout the time of the celebrations of the Beis Hashoeva which is the place where they celebrated the for what they did at the water pouring ceremony over the altar/Mizbeach in the Beis Hamikdosh/Temple.
- The blowing of the flute doesn't not override Shabbos or Yomtov.
- They said that anyone who didn’t see the Joy of the Beis Hashoeva has not seen joy in his lifetime. And through this simcha people would reach to Ruach Hokodesh.
- Rav
- There were many instruments there but the flute was louder than the other instruments, we put them all under the one heading of the blowing of the Flute.
- 5 or 6 days - Sometimes it was blown for 5 days and other years it was blown for 6 days.
- If the first day of Yomtov fell out on Shabbos, it was blown for 6 days.
- If the first day of Yomtov fell out during the week, it was blown for 5 days.
- Simchas Beis Hashoeva - it was called this because this whole joy was because of the water pouring on the Mizebeach because of the posuk that says - ושאבתם מים בששון.
- Maleches Shloimoi
- In Gemoro Yerushalmi it explains the word שואבה - because from there they drew down Ruach Hakodesh. The Shecinah would rest on a person through him being happy. As it is written in Malochim that when the musician would play his musical instrument Elisha again had his Ruach Hakodesh restored.
- And Tosfos brings the story of Yona ben Aitai that was one of the people going up to the temple for the festivals and on Simchas Beis Hashoevah, the divine presence rested upon him.
- Tosfos Yomtov
- של בית השואבה - This was the name of the place they organised to rejoice in
- Tiferes Yisroel
- This was the name of the place in the womens’ court where they fixed up many things there for the rejoicing celebration of the water drawing which was for the pouring on the Mizbeach/Altar during Sukkas.

Sukkah Chapter 4 Mishna 8
Mishna Sukkah Succah Mishnayis Mishnah Mishnayit Perek 4 Chapter 4 Mishna 8 Mishneh 8
In this video, we explain how Sukkas is celebrated for 7 days but on all 8 days of Sukkot, we still rejoice by eating the meat of the Korbon Shlamim and reciting the Hallel prayer. We also explained how we transition from the 7th day to the 8th day of Succas by taking down the Kailim and sheets from the Sukka to use in the house for the 8th day celebration of Shemini Atzeres. However, we cannot dismantle the Succah on the 7th day of Chal Hamoed Sukkos because it applies for the whole day, even after we have finished using it. The 8th day is like the previous 7 days in terms of rejoicing and saying Hallel, except we don't use the Sukkah.
Today however, we still eat in the Sukkah on the 8th day, but we don't recite the blessing of sitting in the Sukkah since we are no longer obligated to sit in the Sukkah after 7 days.

Mishna Sukkah Chapter 4 Mishna 7 | Solving the Unsolved Mystery of the Missing Esrog on the 7th Day!
Mishna Sukkah Succah Mishnayis Mishnah Mishnayit Perek 4 Chapter 4 Mishna 7 Mishneh 7
In this video, we will explore two different versions of what happens when children would have their lulavs removed from them and their Esrogim are eaten up! We will also learn who ate the Esrog and why it was acceptable for the children to no longer have their Esrogim after the seventh day. How would you feel if someone took away your Esrog? How would you feel if someone gobbled it up? But we learn that Temple times were different and that was the expectation of the time of this joyous occasion.

Mishna Sukkah Chapter 4 Mishna 6 Unveiling the Mystery of the Ancient Altar Ceremony
Mishna Sukkah Succah Mishnayis Mishnah Mishnayit Perek 4 Chapter 4 Mishna 6 Mishneh 6
Chapter 4 Mishna 6 discusses the question of whether it was a date palm or a willow branch that was used in the ceremony done by the Kohanim at the Altar, the Mizebeach. This mishneh explains how the same procedure that was done with the Willows during the week was also done on Shabbat, Shabbos. Except that they would cut and gather the Arovot on the eve of shabbat and store them in these big containers made out of gold so they wouldn't wither away. "
Rabbi Yochonon ben Broka argues saying that they wouldn't use the Date Palm at all on the mizbeach, the altar rather they would use an Aravot, willows. And the 7th day of taking the Arava, the willows was called the "Banging of the branches."

Mishnayis Sukkah Chapter 4 Mishna 5 speaks about how they did the mitzvah of taking the willow branch. They would get it from a place called Moitza. And they would cut these big pieces of willow branches to put on the sides of the Mizbeach. They would blow the Sofar and circle the Mizbeach each day and say a special prayer at the Mizbeach and praise the Mizbeach and Hashem.
