Today I am going to show you how to automate your Samsung SmartThings indoor home surveillance camera. I'll show you how to setup your SmartThings camera so that you receive recorded video notifications in response to activity in your home while you’re away. The automation will enable your camera after the last person leaves your home’s geofence. Even though you are not able use the SmartThings App to view or control most WiFi or Bluetooth devices which are paired with Alexa, alternatively, you can control these device indirectly using a virtual switch in SmartThings. The SmartThings virtual switch can be used in a Alexa routine as a Alexa device trigger to power on your Alexa compatible WiFi or Blue device. This easy SmartThings automation will help you automate Alexa Guard so that your Echo devices are automatically placed in guard mode when all members of your household depart. Also Alexa Guard will be automatically stopped when any one family member returns home. This automation uses a Simulated Alexa Switch that is easy to setup as a device handler in the SmartThings IDE. To find instructions for setting up the Simulated Alexa Switch in the SmartThings device handler just watch my video found at the following link: https://youtu.be/3aVHQBeF5Ik Once this virtual switch is setup as a Device Handler, you must then create a new device using the Simulated Alexa Switch that can be used within the SmartThings app to trigger the switch on/off with in a SmartThings automation or scene. I the previous video I gave instructions for creating a virtual presence switch for each family member's mobile device. These mobile device switches provide the ability to see the status of your mobile phones in the SmartThings App device list. You then may use the status of your smart phones within scenes and automatons. In a follow-up video, titled "SmartThings Automation Using Mobile Phone Presence", I demonstrated how to create an automation within the SmartThings App using these virtual presence switches. I also demonstrated how to use smart phone presence to have your voice assistant, (i.e. your Amazon Echo devices), to Announce SmartThings device status changes. The greatest benefit in adding these virtual presence switches to your SmartThings app is that it provides you the ability to use the your smart phones presence within third party apps. I have a Good Bye Routine using "Member location" based on our phones proximity to the Hub's geolocation. The routine states: If all phones are 'Away" from the geolocation the Change location mode to AWAY and Change the STHM to "Armed (away)". Conversely, I have an “I'm Back” Routine using "Member location” that states, If any one member phone returns, then change the hub’s location mode to "HOME" and set the STHM to "Disarmed". IMPORTANT: I have personally found that older phones (iOS devices) do not work reliably within ST as presence sensors. Since I upgraded my iPhone from an iPhone 7 to an iPhone 14 it now works flawlessly as a presence sensor. The same is true for my wife’s iPhone 11. It also works reliably. The reason I believe that the older Apple phones do not work reliably as a presence sensor in SmartThings is because they are not able to use the last version of iOS. In this SmartThings smart home automaton video I show you how to enable the Door Chimes in the new SmartThings App. The door chime automaton is done in the new SmartThings App via the Speaker Companion App. I will demonstrate how I set-up the Speaker Companion Smart App to play a chime notification on my Dome Siren. These Dome Siren chime sounds were available in the Classic ST App via a custom device handler. This Dome Siren device handler was made available on the SmartThings Community by developer Kevin Laframboise. The chime and bell sounds once available in the Custom SmartThings App can now be replicated in the New SmartThings App. NOTE: The Dome Siren was not available on Amazon at the time of this video. I installed an Ecolink Zwave Plus Network Security Siren recently for a customer, (link below). The siren simply plugs in to any 120v receptacle and therefore does not require batteries. I simply plugged it in and it automatically paired with SmartThings. It has a Siren and three other chimes/beeps. I saw some complaints about the low volume level on the Siren. It is set low by default, however, you can adjust the volume by moving an internal jumper. I finally received my invitation from SmartThings to migrate my SmartThings devices, routines, scenes and apps from the old SmartThings Classic App to the new SmartThings App. Unfortunately, the move was not without some difficulty. When migrating the Classic data I was advised that my Smart Home Monitor settings could not be migrated. I was instructed by the migration utility that I needed to delete the Smartthings Home Monitor in the new app in order to complete the migration. But how? This SharpTools routine uses SmartThings devices, Amazon Devices and the EchoSpeaks Application to report the status of my two garage doors at 20 minutes prior to sunset. The rules controlling this routine are written to report four potential states of my two doors. The routine is created in Echo Speaks and uses the Echo Speaks custom response designer to repeat verbal alerts through one or more Amazon Echo devices such as your Echo Dots or Echo Show. Additionally, the Echo Speaks routine sends repeated push notifications to one or more smart phones. In the video I will show you how to trigger custom voice notification on your Alexa Echo devices using the SmartThings Community App called Echo Speaks. You can write a vast variety of Echo Speaks routines to remind you to perform certain tasks at various times of the week. The voice notification can be customized to speak in male or female voices and in a multitude of dialects.
