Spiritual Warfare - Terms of Engagement

In this lesson we discover how to empower the wearing of the whole armor of God. It's possible for a soldier to be fully dressed in armor and weapon for battle, but lack courage and conviction and power - the will to engage the enemy. In the spiritual life, the power to engage and be victorious over the enemy comes through prayer - for ourselves and for "all the saints." Ephesians 6.18

In this lesson we discover how to use the Sword of the Spirit. An armory is a depot or facility where weapons are stored. In that sense, the Bible is an armory in which are stored many individual truths that can be used as a weapon - a sword of the Spirit - to defeat the temptations and attacks of the enemy if we learn to use them. Ephesians 6.17

​I​n this lesson we learn of the protection provided by the helmet of salvation. Ideas and thoughts have consequences. Because the battle field of spiritual warfare is the mind, the believer's thoughts are of central importance to victory. The helmet of salvation provides the believer with the mind of Christ and the wisdom of God as he enters the battle.​ Ephesians 6.17

In this lesson we discover the priority of faith in spiritual warfare. Whether one is a soldier, athlete, carpenter, or shop owner, various pieces of equipment are critical to accomplishing one's mission. And that is true of the believer engaged in spiritual warfare. Of all the elements of the armor of God, faith is the most fundamental and important.

In this lesson we discover the role of peace in spiritual warfare. As hard as the world has tried to produce peace in our time, it has failed. That is because the world has yet to submit itself to the Author of peace who alone is able to calm the fears and anxieties of individuals and nations. Satan has no power over those who are at peace with God. Ephesians 6.15

In this lesson we explore how righteousness protects the believer from Satan. Police and military personnel are wearing increasingly high-tech versions of a bulletproof vest -- lighter, stronger, and more protective -- to protect their vital organs. Just so, the Christian needs to wear the breastplate of righteousness continually to protect his most vital organ: the heart. Ephesians 6.14

In this lesson we learn the importance of truth in spiritual warfare. The mind is the primary battlefield on which spiritual warfare is waged. Therefore, our spiritual defense comes down to what we believe and think. If our mind is filled with truth about God, ourselves, and our enemy, then we will be prepared to withstand the lies and deceit of Satan. Ephesians 6.14

In this lesson we prepare for spiritual victory by getting to know our enemy. Knowing one's opponent or enemy is one of the secrets to victory on the playing field or the battlefield. So coaches and generals spend hours studying their opponents' game and battle plans. The study of Scripture is the best way for a Christian to learn the ways of Satan.
