Caught on camera: Justin Bieber pissing in jail cell after arrest in Miami - TomoNews
Justin Bieber, reportedly urinated in his jail cell after his arrest in Miami for DUI, drag-racing and driving with an invalid license in late January, and it was all caught on camera! Miami police previously released a video showing a visibly frustrated Bieber being frisked at a Miami station and begging for it to stop. This as-yet-unreleased new video allegedly shows a drunken Bieber stumbling around his prison cell on January 23, before taking a piss. This isn't the first time Bieber has been caught urinating in inappropriate places. Last July, Bieber was seen relieving himself in a mop bucket at a New York City diner. And just last month, Bieber was spotted marking his territory in Colorado. The 19-year-old pop star splashed his initials into the snow in yellow font, all the while nearby residents watched in disbelief. Bieber's lawyers are scrambling to have the release of the footage (and any additional material related to Bieber's arrest) blocked before they have the chance to see it. While Bieber doesn't really seem bothered with urinating in public, the deed is illegal in all 50 states, so it looks like he may be facing even more legal troubles.

Saddest Cat in the World is Luhu, a Beijing furball of pure sorrow - TomoNews
BEIJING — Luhu the cat is sad. So sad in fact, she’s been dubbed the “saddest cat in the world” by the Internet. Luhu lives in Beijing with her human caregiver Maggie Liu and two older feline brothers, but experts say neither of these facts explain Luhu’s sadness. This cat is like a furball of pure sorrow. Maggie claims that despite the perpetual look of misery on Luhu’s face, she’s actually a well-adjusted, active kitty … But that’s what you’d expect her to say. To us however, it’s obvious something is wrong because no cat has ever looked this sad. Maggie has 40,000 Instagram followers checking out her thousands of pictures of Luhu and her siblings, but most of Luhu’s fans seem content to just stare into her eyes of sorrowful abyss.
We want action! Someone somewhere needs to stop making this cat so sad! #stopmakingtheworldssaddestcatsad !

Japanese ghost town Nagoro has more scarecrow dolls than actual people - TomoNews
There’s something weird happening in the sleepy Japanese mountain hamlet of Nagoro. Deaths, a declining national birthrate and depopulation have seen countryside communities like it whither. For years, the young have been abandoning villages like Nagoro, heading for the cities in search of better job opportunities, acutely aware that whatever dreams they have will surely fade and die were they to remain. But dreams often give way to the cruel realities of life. Some the of the young people may turn to a life of prostitution, servicing drunken salarymen doing their best to avoid neurotic wives and emotionally distant children.Today Nagaro is home to a lonely number of just 35 survivors — those who have neither the means or wish to leave. Their only company, a growing legion of canvas mannequins who outnumber the living three-to-one. These dolls are the work of Tsukimi Ayano, a 65-year-old woman who has returned to Nagoro to care for her elderly father, having moved to Osaka decades ago. Tsukimi is one of the town’s youngest residents. “They bring back memories,” she says of the scarecrows which leer at visitors from unchanging vantage points. Their dead eyes seeing your every move; their strange, unnatural poses making you feel ill at ease. “That old lady used to come and chat and drink tea. That old man used to love to drink sake and tell stories. It reminds me of the old times, when they were still alive and well, she told a reporter from the Associated Press. There is little sign Nagoro’s population will ever be replenished. It is a museum honoring a better time when town’s like it buzzed with activity. For now, its only nre residents are the product of the mind and hands of an elderly woman caring for her father.

Baby polar bear cub is Toronto Zoo’s cutest killing machine - TomoNews
Meet the Toronto zoo’s newest and cutest inhabitant, this baby polar bear cub. He was born on November 9th, 2013 and he will one day grow up to be an unstoppable killing machine. Aw, look at his little paws. The Toronto zoo’s mama bear, Aurora, gave birth to three baby bear cubs on the same day, each one pinker and blinder than the next. Although zookeepers said this cub initially exhibited signs of weakness, within 48 hours, his two brothers were dead, making this cute little guy the ultimate survivor. As is natures way, this adorable ball of fluff will one day experience the insatiable urge to sink his fangs into a zoo handler’s throat, rip out his esophagus and spray red carnage all over the painted white fiberglass glaciers of his enclosure. Can you believe how cute his little button nose is? I just wanna squeeze him! Polar bears are unique among the land animals because they are the only species that will actively and deliberately hunt humans for food. In Norway, inhabitants of the snowy north live in constant fear that a polar bear will stalk them in the blinding snow, hold them down with one paw and chew off their faces, while horrified townsfolk run for safety, forever scarred by the image of their loved one’s skinless face screeching for help. Indeed, the polar bear is such a formidable killer that it cannot be brought down by a normal assault rifle or handgun. Residents of the arctic take high powered rifles with them wherever they go. For only a massive hunting rifle has the power to crush through the polar bear’s thick skull, and only then if you see it before it sees you. The most amazing thing about polar bears is how adult males will eat cubs of their own species that don’t belong to them. Even as the polar bear teeters on the edge of extinction, the brutal facts of life in the arctic mean this huggable baby cub will only be seen as future competition to any adult male which turns his gaze upon it. And one day, when he grows up, the Toronto Zoo’s little cub will be a remorseless killer too! Awwww!

Ghost photobombs: Ghost appears in Georgia teenager’s selfie after fishing trip - TomoNews
ADEL, GEORGIA — A teenage girl from Georgia got a tingle down her spine when she checked her photos from a recent fishing trip. Haley Ogletree, 13, was taking a selfie last week when she was photobombed by a ghost, according to a Facebook post by her mom, Jessica. Haley and her brother Kolton had gone fishing with their grandparents to celebrate the boy’s birthday. According to their mom, Kolton caught the biggest fish, like EVER!, so maybe the ghost was happy for him. Seems like the photobomb phantom appeared when Kolton was packing the fishing tackle box back in the trunk. Haley’s mom said her son didn’t notice anyone standing there and there were no other people around that day. So there couldn’t possibly be any other explanation for how the man appeared in the photo. Mmmm ... could there?

Meat grinder: Man’s hand mangled by meat grinder after glove gets caught in machine - TomoNews
PUZI, TAIWAN — A young man in Taiwan learned about the dangers of kitchen equipment the hard way when his hand was pulled into a meat grinder. According to Apple Daily, the 22-year-old male employee, surnamed Chen, had just graduated from culinary school and recently joined his uncle’s staff at a turkey rice restaurant. In a demonstration of good hygiene, Chen always made sure to wear gloves whenever he handled meat in the kitchen. However, it was Chen’s adherence to health codes that may have cost him the use of his hand. On May 18th, Chen was preparing some turkey meat when a glove he was wearing became caught inside the meat grinder. The meat grinder relentlessly continued to pull the rest of the glove, with Chen’s hand inside of it, farther into the machine. Chen’s uncle immediately unplugged the machine and called firefighters to help. To avoid doing more damage to Chen’s hand, the responders opted not to dismantle the machine there, and brought him — with the meat grinder still attached — to the hospital.A specialist helped disassemble the meat grinder, but no word yet on whether doctors were able to save Chen’s hand.

Yellowstone supervolcano: Volcano could erupt faster than previously thought - TomoNews
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — A new study suggests Yellowstone’s supervolcano could become active in just a few decades if the right conditions developed. Arizona State University researchers analyzed minerals in ancient fossilized ash from the most recent mega-eruption and believe the supervolcano became active after two injections of magma into the reservoir underneath the caldera, National Geographic reported. They found the minerals showed that the critical changes in temperature and composition built up over a few decades. Geologists previously thought it took centuries for supervolcanoes to go active. Supervolcanoes have an eruption magnitude of 8 on the Volcano Explosivity Index (VEI) and spit out more than 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cubic miles) of hot rock and ash, according to Science Alert. For now Yellowstone’s supervolcano hasn’t shown any indications of an eruption, although experts agree there’s no way of knowing when the next blast will occur.

Airline seats: U.S. judge orders FAA to solve shrinking seat sizes amid safety concerns - TomoNews
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington D.C. on Friday ordered the Federal Aviation Administration to review claims by advocacy groups that shrinking airline seats have created a potential safety hazard for passengers. Judge Patricia Millett rejected the FAA's argument that seat size was not a factor in getting off the plane in an emergency.“This is the Case of the Incredible Shrinking Airline Seat. As many have no doubt noticed, aircraft seats and the spacing between them have been getting smaller and smaller, while American passengers have been growing in size,” Millett wrote in her ruling. According to advocacy group Flyers Rights, the average width of airplane seats has decreased from 18.5 inches in the early 2000s to 17 inches by 2005. The average seat pitch, meaning the distance between seat rows, has declined from an average of 35 inches to 31 inches, and is even as low as 28 inches on some airlines.Under the current FAA regulation airlines are free to determine the size and space of seats but the arrangement must allow all passengers and crew to evacuate within 90 seconds. American Airlines plans to order new Boeing 737 jets with just 29 inches of seat pitch in the last three rows in economy in order to make room for an extra row of premium seats towards the front of the plane, according to the Guardian.

Turning CO2 into oxygen: Scientists change carbon dioxide to ethanol using the sun - TomoNews
BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA — Scientists at the Berkeley Lab in California have developed technology that can convert carbon dioxide into ethanol using sunlight. The research was published in the journal, Energy & Environmental Science. The study employed low amounts of solar energy in a copper-silver nanocoral cathode to produce the ethanol. “Reducing CO2 to a hydrocarbon end product like ethanol or ethylene can take up to 5 volts, start to finish,” explained the study’s lead author Gurudayal in a Berkeley Lab news release. “Our system reduced that by half while maintaining the selectivity of products.”

China vs US: DF-ZF hypersonic missile system could defeat U.S. defenses - TomoNews
China successfully conducted a flight test this week of its DF-ZF hypersonic glide vehicle, according to a report in the Washington Free Beacon. The hypersonic vehicle was launched atop a ballistic missile from the Wuzhai missile test center in Shanxi Province and glided to an impact range in western China, several thousand miles away. The test was tracked by U.S. intelligence agencies, according to the report, which cites unnamed defense officials. The DF-ZF hypersonic glide vehicle is believed to be highly maneuverable and capable of flying at speeds of between Mach 5, and Mach 10, or between five and 10 times the speed of sound. It is thought to be under development to carry both nuclear and non-nuclear payloads. Because of the DF-ZF’s speed and maneuverability, intercepting it would be difficult for current U.S. defenses, which rely on satellite and ground radar to track and intercept missiles that travel along a predictable flight path. Richard Fisher, senior fellow at the Virginia-based International Assessment and Strategy Center, told the Taipei Times that the vehicle could potentially be used to attack U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. This latest launch is the sixth time China has conducted a flight test on the DF-ZF in the past year, the Washington Free Beacon reports. According to the 2015 U.S.-China Economic and Security Review report, the DF-ZF could be deployed by 2020. The DF-ZF was previously known as the Wu-14.

China vs. USA: PLA Navy now has more submarines than the US Navy - TomoNews
China now has more submarine vessels than the United States. According to top U.S. Navy Admiral Joseph Mulloy, China has also simultaneously increased the geographic reach of the submarines and the length of time they stay at sea. The United States Department of Defense’s last annual report to Congress put China’s submarine count at 60, although current estimates suggest that the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s submarine program has since grown. Compared to the U.S. Navy’s 71 vessels and the Russian Navy’s 63, China now has around 80 vessels (including experimental vessels), and continues to develop more. Mulloy told a congressional subcommittee though, that China’s submarine quality is still “inferior.” While China’s submarines have been regularly patrolling the Philippine Sea, they are now frequently sailing through Southeast Asia and into the Indian Ocean. Deployment times have also increased with China now keeping vessels at sea for as long as 95 days. China has both nuclear-powered submarines and diesel-powered vessels, and the East Asian nation continues to develop and test ballistic-missile submarines. According to U.S. naval officers, China has yet to deploy vessels carrying armed nuclear missiles, although it has launched several tests. According to the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence, these submarine-launched missiles, if fired from East Asia, will have a range that encompases Hawaii and Alaska. In the past few years, China has made no effort to hide its desire to increase its military footprint and capability in the region. Besides a growing submarine program, Beijing has also invested in other vessels and technology including anti-ship missiles, larger aircraft carriers and fast attack craft.

Surviving a plane crash: Small jet plunges as it flies under Emirates superjumbo - TomoNews
MUSCAT, OMAN — A small private jet miraculously survived after it was flipped over and plunged 10,000 feet after getting caught in turbulence from a passing superjumbo jet. According to a recent report in the Aviation Herald, the Bombardier Challenger 604 had nine passengers on board and was flying over the Arabian Sea from the Maldives to Abu Dhabi at around 8:40 a.m. on Jan. 7 when it encountered an Emirates Airbus A380 en route from Dubai to Sydney. As the private jet flew underneath the double-decker Airbus, it was hit by the much larger plane’s wake turbulence. The turbulence flipped the small jet over five times, subjecting those inside to strong G-forces and injuring several of them. The crew used “raw muscle force” to manually stabilize the jet, restart the engines and divert the flight to Muscat in Oman for an emergency landing. Several passengers were taken to hospital for treatment, one with serious injuries. The private jet, operated by German carrier MHS Aviation, suffered such extensive damage that it had to be written off. Germany’s Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation is leading an investigation into the incident.
