Parkour fail: Man plunges 40 feet down chimney trying to film a parkour video - TomoNews
DENVER — A man fell 40 feet down a chimney of a loft building while trying to film a parkour video. Dustin Hinkle, 26, and a few friends were making the video on the rooftop of the Denver City Lofts last Friday when things went down, CBS Denver reported. Hinkle said he was running, climbing and jumping on the roof of the building when he landed on a chimney cover that gave way. “We were just trying to have some fun, and I jumped off, hung off the edge and my feet were only two feet above the other one, and I dropped down, and I dropped down, and I fell through the top of it,” Hinkle told CBS Denver. After plunging 40 feet down, a cable caught his fall, according to officials. Hinkles was stuck inside the chimney for about two hours. Firefighters entered a vacant apartment and had to rip through the brick to extract him, according to CBS Denver. After getting checked out at the hospital, Hinkle was arrested and charged with trespassing. His friends Jayce Anderson, 23 and Mary Jo McHugh, 20, were also charged with trespassing and with interference of a police officer for reportedly running from police.

Guard dog: german shepherd attacks intruder, family returns to find blood on the walls - TomoNews
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA — A pet german shepherd has proven his worth as a guard dog, after his family arrived home to find blood splattered across the walls of their house, likely from an intruder. On August 10, Tristan Murran and his mother walked through their front door, their dog Oden waiting patiently near the entrance. At first glance, everything seemed normal, but a few paces deeper into their home revealed blood on the walls, the doors, the carpeted stairs, and all across the second floor of their house. Tristan claims Oden has never attacked anyone before or shown any signs of aggression, but he clearly has it in him when he finds himself in the line of duty. So far, there are no leads on a potential suspect. The family posted a video of the crime scene in their home on Facebook, which has since racked up more than 17 million views. According to ABC News 8, authorities suspect the intruder must have required medical attention following the failed break and enter attempt.

Serial killer? Missing woman Kala Brown found alive, but boyfriend still missing - TomoNews
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA — A woman missing for months has been found alive, chained up like a dog on an isolated property owned by a convicted sex offender. Kala Brown, 30, was found by deputies on Thursday when they searched a property owned by registered sex offender Todd Kohlhepp, NBC affiliate WYFF reported. Brown was discovered when deputies heard banging coming from inside a metal container. She had been held in the container since going missing in August, unable to escape because of a metal chain around her neck. Brown told investigators there could be four bodies on the property. Her boyfriend Chris Carver, who disappeared around the same time, remains missing. Investigators also found Carver’s car on Kohlhepp’s property, WSPA reported. Kohlhepp is likely to be charged with kidnapping and investigators continued to search the property for bodies. Investigators said they were trying to establish if they had a serial killer on their hands. The case came to national attention when posts appeared on Carver’s Facebook page that his family suspect were written by someone else. They were later deleted.

Eagle vs. Goose - Photographer captures brawl between American eagle and Canada Goose - TomoNews
VANCOUVER ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA — Canadian photographer Lisa Bell recently found herself witnessing the majesty of nature up close in a battle royale between a bald eagle and a Canada goose. On June 3, she published the series of photographs on Facebook. At 7:15 in the morning, while vacationing with her family on Vancouver Island, Bell saw the bald eagle descending upon the unsuspecting Canada goose. Scrambling for her camera, she managed to photograph the remarkable tussle of these two feathered foes. The eagle, maybe a bit too cocky with its catch, left the door open for the goose to duck out from underneath. And the Canada goose didn’t take the opportunity for granted, making a break for it as fast as his wings could flap. Sensing the water was where he might have the advantage, he dove into a nearby pond, and got himself to safety, minus a few scratches and bruises. The final photographs in Bell’s series of ten are of the goose swimming freely around the pond, and the eagle flying away.

Paralyzed man’s balls eaten by pet dog in Arkansas - TomoNews
A 39-year-old Trumann, Arkansas man who is paralyzed below the waist woke up Monday morning to find that one of his testicles had been eaten by a “small, white fluffy dog” that he had rescued from the street three weeks before. A "burning pain" in his mid-section is what woke the man up, and he looked down to see his new pet with blood on its muzzle and front feet, chewing on one of his testicles. When the man looked closer, he found that the dog had actually chewed off and eaten one of his testicles. He said that he had never taken the dog to the doctor to get him checked out, so he wasn’t sure if it was vaccinated. When when police took the canine to see the vet for the first time, it was also its last visit, as the doctor had to put it down. The dog's head was later sent to the health department for testing to make sure it wasn’t infected with rabies.

Unlucky in love: He didn’t realize his wife was already married and using him for sperm - TomoNews
Mr. Ning is a 45-year-old man who has been unlucky in love. In fact, he’s been unluckier than most when it comes to romantic relationships. His first wife left him and took their daughter with her. The woman Mr. Ning dated on the rebound got back together with her ex-boyfriend and also left him. He then confessed his love to a female coworker named Huping, but she blew him off. It seemed that Mr. Ning was destined to be alone in love, until one day Huping called him and said she’d had a change of heart. In fact, she’d already travelled all the way across to the country to his hometown to show her devotion. Was this finally it? Mr. Ning and Huping were married within the month and Huping was pregnant within a few weeks. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy and all seemed well. Until one morning when Mr. Ning returned home to discover his wife and baby boy missing. His parents told him that Huping had taken the baby to the hospital because the boy was running a fever, when Mr. Ning went to the hospital no one had seen his wife or child. It wasn’t until four years later with the help of media and police in Shenzhen that Mr. Ning discovered his wife and child living in Hong Kong. What’s worse, he discovered Huping had already been married for six years before marrying him. When Mr. Ning finally contacted Huping, she finally told him the truth. She had married a rich man and was living in Hong Kong when her father-in-law became terminally ill. Her father-in-law’s will stipulated that his grandsons would receive 30% of his assets upon his death. Since Huping’s legal husband in Hong Kong was infertile she set out to get knocked up. Using falsified documents Huping changed her ID to state that she was single. She said she decided getting married would be the safest way to get as much sex as possible without the risk of STDs and she knew Mr. Ning loved her so she was fairly certain he wouldn’t cheat on her. It’s been 10 years since Mr. Ning last saw Huping. But, since the woman he knocked up was married to someone else, China’s laws stipulate that the son belongs to the married couple and he has no legal claims to the child. Huping did pay Mr. Ning USD $5K for his stud fees but that was the last contact he had. Apparently in the past 10 years Mr. Ning hasn’t had much luck or it’s just taken him that long to get over this latest setback. But Mr. Ning recently took to the Internet in China to share his series of tragic love stories in hopes of finding a woman who will love him for real this time.

Beijing Daxing Airport: Take a look inside the new Beijing mega airport - TomoNews
BEIJING — A new mega-sized airport being built in China could shift the balance of power in the country’s airline industry. Beijing’s new 6-pier, radial-shaped airport was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. It will cover an area of 313,000sqm. Flag carrier Air China dominates the current Beijing airport. Its regional rivals China Eastern Airlines control Shanghai, while China Southern Airlines hold Guangzhou. The new airport will allow China Eastern and China Southern a 40 percent share of passengers each, which may encourage the two provincial airlines to open lucrative new North American routes, Bloomberg reported. “There are demands to add hundreds of flights in Beijing every day that get refused because we’re running out of resources,” Liu Xuesong, general manager of Capital Airports Holding, the operator of Beijing’s existing airport, told Bloomberg. The new airport is due to open in 2019 and will have a capacity of 100 million passengers a year. Liu told Bloomberg that the current Capital International Airport and the new airport together will handle 170 million passengers annually with their seven runways by 2025. Industry experts worry the expansion will result in heavy air traffic as only about 20 percent of China’s airspace is open to civilian flights. China is known for flight delays. Its big three airlines were ranked the least punctual of the world’s major carriers last year.

Father and son get second, third degree burns from theme park ride - TomoNews
PARK CITY, UTAH — A family’s summer vacation went horribly awry after a day at the theme park turned into a hellish nightmare. Kenny Edwards and his son suffered severe burns while on a slide at Utah’s Olympic Park, and believe the park’s management is not giving riders enough warning about the slide’s dangers, according to a Facebook page the family set up about their ordeal. On July 3, Edwards and his 4-year-old son were going down the Alpine slide when the sled they were on stopped at a turn and sent them tumbling onto the hot metal. Edwards grabbed the edge of the hot slide and managed to maneuver his son into his lap, but didn’t realize the severity of his burns until the boy pointed them out to him. The skin on his hands had peeled off, and the flesh underneath was red and raw. Edwards got off the slide and flagged down another rider to help bring his son down, reports KUTV. The kind stranger delivered the severely injured boy to his waiting mother. The Texas father of two eventually made it down the slide on the defective sled, with third-degree burns all over his body. The hot metal cooked parts of his leg, elbow and almost 90 percent of his backside. Riders are told beforehand not to touch the hot slide, but aren’t informed that doing so could result in severe injuries. The family is now seeking to get the park to give more explicit warnings about the slide, especially as visitors are required to sign waivers assuming responsibility for any injury or death.

Triton oxygen mask allows underwater breathing without oxygen tanks - TomoNews
South Korean designer Jeabyun Yeon claims to have invented an oxygen mask which can draw air from water as you swim, allowing users to breathe underwater without oxygen tanks. Called Triton, the mask is a mouthpiece respirator that allows users to breathe underwater by simply biting on the mouthpiece, which eliminates the need to inhale or exhale. According to reports, the mask's two arms act like the gills of a fish. The water is first sucked in by the arms. The oxygen is then extracted by a filter with fine threads and with holes smaller than water molecules. The excess fluid is then released while the oxygen is stored using a micro compressor inside a small tank. The compressor is powered by a micro battery that is supposedly 30 times smaller than its contemporaries, but charges a thousand times faster. Yeon himself describes it as "a future product", not yet available in stores, that could change people's approach to water.

Teacher who had sex with two boys in love triangle will not serve any jail time - TomoNews
A former high school teacher is counting her lucky stars this week, after a judge ruled she would not have serve jail time or register as a sex offender for hooking up with two 17-year-old students. Previously a math teacher in Westlake, Haeli Noelle Wey, 29, went on a trip to Africa with a student and his family in the summer of 2015. There, the two took their bond to the next level, embarking on a relationship over the next several months. The student testified the two engaged in intercourse at least ten times. Unfortunately, their burgeoning love affair fell apart when the boy found out Ms. Wey had moved onto another male student of the same age. The second male student was invited on a secluded hike by Ms. Wey. When they went on their excursion, at one point pulled out a hammock and started kissing him. When asked if he expected to engage in inappropriate activity with Ms. Wey along the trail, the victim said “Yeah.” When asked why that was his response, he replied “A teacher just doesn’t hang out with a student to hang out.” Wey was outed for her questionable behavior when the first male student confessed their relationship to his parents. After pleading guilty in February to two counts of having an improper relationship with a student, the courts handed out a 10-year probation sentence and 200 hours of community service. The age of consent is Texas is 17, but teachers are not allowed to get it on with students, unless they were to get married.

Santa Claus: Original tomb of St. Nicholas possibly uncovered under Turkish church - TomoNews
DEMRE, TURKEY — Sorry kids, Santa Claus is dead, and is apparently buried in Turkey. Hurriyet Daily News reports that archaeologists have found an intact shrine underneath the Demre church in Turkey’s Antalya province, and suspect it to be the final resting place of St. Nicholas. The area where the church is located is reportedly the same region where St. Nick was born during the 4th century. It was there that the jolly saint formed the reputation for gift-giving that eventually gave rise to the legend of Santa Claus. After his death in 343 AD, the saint was interred in the church, and lay undisturbed until the 11th century. It’s widely believed that Italian sailors then took his remains in 1087 and transported them to Bari, where they lie to this day in the Basilica di San Nicola. According to documents obtained by the Turkish archaeologists, however, the remains that were taken supposedly belonged to a local priest. Though many are skeptical, the Turkish team is determined to prove their theory right, and will soon begin the arduous task of removing an intricate mosaic tile by tile in order to get to the untouched tomb.

US laptop ban: Homeland might ban all larger electronic devices on flights in and out of ‘Murica - TomoNews
THE FRIENDLY SKIES — The United States is considering banning laptops from all flights in and out of the country in an effort to protect against possible security threats. U.S. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said in an interview on Fox News Sunday that the U.S. is planning on raising the bar on airline security. He said the move would be part of a broader airline security effort to combat what he called “a real sophisticated threat,” according to Reuters. Kelly also said no decision has been made yet as to when the ban will take effect. Tighter screening of carry-on items will likely be included as passengers have started to pack more into their carry-ons to avoid being charged extra fees for checking in bags. What does this mean for everyday passengers? Even longer waits and more face time with the TSA. Airlines are worried a broad ban may hit their bottom line, although they’re prepared to take appropriate measures.

Alien found in California: bizarre mysterious creature found outside San Jose's house - TomoNews
SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA — A bizarre creature was allegedly found by a woman right outside her house in San Jose, California. Gianna Peponis found the dead creature at night, after hearing a scream. Struggling to understand what it was, Peponis posted the picture online. Needless to say, the internet community went wild. It's for sure an alien, some said. It's an animal fetus, other believed. From the picture, it does look like the creature could be a half eaten deer fetus. According to one Reddit user, quoted by Mic, "Sometimes when mother deer/cattle are in fight or flight situations they will evacuate their uterus to allow for a quicker escape," the user said. "Not saying that's what happened here but it could've." Gianna Peponis however is convinced not only that the bizarre creature is an alien, but that she might be even in danger. Some users said she she is insane, and just stole old pictures to post them online to grab attention. And you? What do you think?

NASA's flying saucer, aka the Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator, paves the way for landing heavy sp - TomoNews
NASA was forced to cancel six attempted launches of a saucer-shaped Mars landing test vehicle in early June because of unusually strong winds at the Hawaiian test site. NASA has developed the Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator, a 3,048 kg flight vehicle, with a view to overcoming the obstacles of a Martian landing. The vehicle is launched by a helium balloon, which will ascend to 36,600 metres. "We cannot have very high winds near the ground so that the balloon is able to be launched and not be damaged by the winds," said Mark Adler, project manager of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in an interview with Space.com. "We also have to have conditions where the higher level winds take the balloon away from populated areas." After reaching altitude, the balloon is detached from the craft, which will continue its ascent by igniting solid-fuel engines. When the vehicle reaches 54,800 metres, it will be travelling at a maximum speed of Mach 4. As it slows down from Mach 4 to Mach 3.8, it will deploy a device called a supersonic inflatable aerodynamic decelerator, which resembles an inflatable hula hoop, slowing the speed from Mach 3.8 to Mach 2.5. A 30.5-metre diameter parachute will then be deployed to further slow down the flight vehicle on its way back to Earth. If all things go well, the vehicle will be recovered in the Pacific Ocean off Hawaii. After the successful landing of Curiosity in 2012, NASA's next goal is to place heavier spacecraft and eventually astronauts on the red planet's surface. It presents a huge challenge as the atmosphere on Mars is about 100 times thinner than Earth, meaning that it cannot provide sufficient resistance to slow down a spacecraft for a safe landing.

Laser propulsion: NASA’s laser-powered spacecraft will fly to Mars in 72 hours - TomoNews
NASA scientist Philip Lubin is working on perfecting laser technology that could propel a light spacecraft to Mars in as little as three days. In order for spacecraft to achieve faster speeds, Lubin proposes using an electromagnetic propulsion system that uses light and radiation, rather than the current fuel-based rocket propulsion system. Photonic propulsion is a theoretical system that uses the energy and momentum from photons to move objects through space. According to Wired, when photons from a laser array reflect off an object, their energy is translated into a push that’s capable of moving objects like a spacecraft. The system would currently work best with robotic spacecraft. According to Lubin, a robotic probe with a thin reflective sail could travel to Mars in three days. On the other hand, a manned shuttle could reach Mars in a month using the laser-based system. He estimates that lasers could accelerate spacecraft to 30 percent the speed of light, which was previously unheard of. Using photonic propulsion, interstellar travel may be possible and sending a probe to Earth’s closest star, Alpha Centauri, could take as little as 15 years, reported Space.com. In comparison, our current technology takes four to eight months to get to Mars. It took 37 years for the Voyager 1 spacecraft to reach the edge of our solar system.

CHENGDU, CHINA — A trapped kitten was recently rescued from behind a glass wall in China after being stuck there for 72 hours without food or water. Earlier this month, the feline somehow became lodged behind a glass wall in a building in the southwestern city of Chengdu, China’s viral news outlet Kankanews reported. The animal was spotted after three days by a local karaoke receptionist named Dong. He tried to help the kitten but couldn’t find a gap to pull it out, so Dong called the building’s property management office for help. The glass wall was reportedly built between aluminium door frames and a load-bearing wall, so building staff dug a tunnel to rescue the animal. Dong later decided to adopt the kitten, Kankanews reported.

Ocean pollution: 60% of plastic waste in the oceans comes from just five Asian countries - TomoNews
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA — Plastic waste is slowly but surely taking over the world’s oceans, and the bulk of them apparently comes from just five Asian countries. According to a study from Ocean Conservancy called Stemming the Tide, 55-60% of plastic polluting the oceans comes from five countries: China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam. Uncollected and mismanaged waste on land accounts for about 80% of the 8 million metric tons of trash that flow into the oceans each year. Environmental organization Greenpeace claims corporations are also at fault for selling products in single-use plastic packaging, especially in so-called ‘sachet economies’ like the Philippines. Various studies have shown that plastic pollution negatively impacts marine animals, and may be indirectly affecting humans through the food chain. Fortunately, improving waste management practices in the five countries can result in a 45% reduction of global plastic waste leakage by 2025. In tackling plastic pollution, everyone has a role to play. From governments and big conglomerates to the people on the street — every bit helps.

Amazing architecture: world’s first upside down skyscraper would hang from asteroid - TomoNews
NEW YORK — Imagine a daily commute that involves parachuting down to earth. A New York City-based architectural firm has plans that would allow you to do exactly that, with a skyscraper suspended from an orbiting asteroid. Clouds Architecture Office has previously came up with incredible plans for a Mars house and a cloud city. Their newest design, introduced in February, is called Analemma Tower. Analemma would be powered by space-based solar panels, with fresh water provided by condensation from clouds and rain. The water would be filtered and recycled in a semi-closed loop system.Suspended from the asteroid by strong cables, the tower would follow a geosynchronous orbit, tracing a figure-eight pattern over the northern and southern hemispheres once per day. This eccentric orbit would allow it to move slowest as it passes over New York City. Residents would parachute down to work as the orbit slows. The tower would be divided into a business area at the bottom, residential in the middle, and worship towards the top. At the apex would be space for burials, while surface transfer points would lie at the bottom. According to Clouds Architecture Office, construction would take place in Dubai, which has proven record in the construction of tall buildings, at one fifth the cost of New York City.

Super glue in eye: Florida woman nearly blinded after accidentally gluing her eye shut - TomoNews
LANTANA, FLORIDA — A Florida woman wound up nearly blind in one eye after a mixup caused her to accidentally super glue it shut, according to a WPBF report. Katherine Gaydos says she spent more than a week with a stuck eyelid after a friend mistakenly handed her super glue instead of an eye drop. The single mother of two found herself frantically asking the friend to grab Visine out of her purse late last month after he inadvertently blew debris into her eye with a leafblower.Rather than the eye drops, though, the friend instead reportedly handed Gaydos the bottle of glue she uses to apply false fingernails. Her friend's mistake was evident the moment the liquid hit Gaydos' eye as it immediately left her cornea burning and tightly sealed her two left eyelids shut. Gaydos immediately sought help and quickly got preliminary treatment, but lacking both money and insurance, was denied a necessary follow-up. "He was talking about doing surgery to try and save my eye," Gaydos told WPBF, referring to the doctor who first treated her. "But now I don't know what to do -- I don't have a job, no insurance or any money." Luckily, though, after word got out about her story, Gaydos finally got the attention she so desperately needed and a different doctor at the same office was able to quite literally pry her eye open. “He put Lidocaine above and below my eye and just pulled on it until it finally opened,” Gaydos said. Doctors say that after the glue is scraped off her cornea, she'll eventually gain back her eyesight and won't suffer any long-term damage.
