2023 Kentucky Steam Whistle Blow
Learn more about the event here: https://www.kentuckysteam.org/post/kentucky-steam-announces-2023-whistle-blow
The Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation, in collaboration with Delay In Block Productions, is pleased to announce the Third Annual Whistle Blow presented by the Railroadiana Collectors Association Inc. The public event will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at The Yard, in Irvine/Ravenna, KY.
For the first time ever, the whistle blow will be a standalone event with an entire day centered around the folklore and history of the steam locomotive. The event will feature dozens upon dozens of antique steam whistles blown on live steam from railroads around the country. To date, it is the only announced public Whistle Blow in the United States for 2023. For those wanting to take in the event, it will feature train rides, games for kids, local craft beer, local food, and even the opportunity for people to be an engineer of a steam locomotive – not to mention dozens of steam locomotive whistles blown on live locomotive-supplied steam.

CRAZY!!! GE and EMD Locomotives on the MDS Railway
The Meridian Southern Railway is known for its unique roster of General Electric B23-7s, three in Conrail paint and two wearing Santa Fe blue and yellow.
The Class III shortline railroad operates the former Mobile & Ohio mainline, which ran from Mobile to St. Louis. It became a secondary route following the Illinois Central Gulf merger in 1972. After the Stagger’s Rail Act was passed in 1980, ICG was able to divest itself of less-profitable lines, and in 1986, the line was acquired by Mid-South, a regional carrier that was established to operate more than 400 miles of ex-GM&O track.
Between Mobile, Alabama and Meridian, the line suffered from little-to-no maintenance for the better part of 15 years under ICG ownership. This lead MidSouth to abandon a large portion o the line from Crenshaw, just south of Waynesboro, to Mobile. However, thanks to intervention by Waynesboro’s Marshall Durbin Feed Mill, the line was saved from complete abandonment.
After KCS acquired MidSouth in 1994, the line was leased and later sold to Meridian Southern Railway. Under MDS ownership, the line receives ongoing rehabilitation and improvements, but with some sections of rail dating back to 1907, the majority of the 55-mile line is limited to 10MPH. Certain areas are restricted to 5MPH. Although the route features several impressive bridges, most of them are not accessible to the public.

INSANELY TALL New River Railway Bridge
The second-tallest railway bridge in the United States is the New River Cantilever Truss Bridge located near the communities of New River and Helenwood, Tennessee. Opened on July 10th, 1963 by the Southern Railway, this massive structure stands 307'5" high with a span of 1,622ft over its namesake waterway. The bridge is located on Norfolk Southern's CNO&TP line which runs between Cincinnati, Ohio, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. The railroad itself is owned by the City of Cincinnati via the Cincinnati Southern Railway. High Bridge of Kentucky, also located on the CNO&TP line in Wilmore, is technically the tallest in the United States by only 7 inches. There are other bridges that are higher but they are supported by canyon walls as opposed to the structures themselves.

Back in 2013, Nickel Plate Road 765 pulled several excursion trains in Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania for Norfolk Southern’s famed “21st Century Steam Program.” That year, we at Delay In Block teamed up with Fast Flying Virginian Productions to document two of the 765’s excursions in Keystone and Hoosier states.

Norfolk Southern's Hazmat Safety Train
Check out our sponsor, Rail & Road Auctions: https://rarauctions.com/
In the wake of the East Palestine, Ohio derailment and controlled burn on February 3rd, 2023, Norfolk Southern has begun an aggressive, system-wide safety and response campaign to help educate, train, and equip first responders for handling railroad hazmat incidents in local communities.
On Mother’s Day, May 14th, 2023, the train and locomotives arrived in Chattanooga after being towed south by manifest 171 which originated in Conway, Pennsylvania. The locomotives and cars were destined for Birmingham, Alabama where they would be used the next day for emergency management training.
Since time was of the essence, the hazmat safety train was cut away after 171 arrived at DeButts Classification Yard so that it could run as a separate train to Birmingham that afternoon. It would operate as train 098 with the crew going on duty at 1345 Eastern time. This was a historic move in that it was the first time that both SD60E no. 9-1-1 and GP38-2 no. 5642 pulled the train together.

Abandoned Railways: Saluda Grade
Learn more about Saluda Grade: http://www.saludahistoricdepot.com/
Learn more about the Madison Incline: https://youtu.be/NknoK7HIKNA
Our first episode of Abandoned Railways features the world-famous Saluda Grade. Spanning 2.7 miles from the bottom of the grade at Melrose to the crest at Pace’s Crossing in downtown Saluda, the “Mountain of Challenge” averages an estimated gradient of 4.7%, peaking at 5.1% while gaining an elevation of 606 feet. With the grade railbanked since 2001, the City of Saluda hasn’t seen rail traffic in nearly twenty years — but the residents of this great community still remember the trains. What was once a bustling mainline railroad between Asheville, North Carolina and Spartanburg, South Carolina, is now a lonely, idle stretch of mountainous railroad. Covered in kudzu with multiple track washouts, Saluda Grade is slowly being reclaimed by Mother Nature.
