pASS or GAS! Slicer, Hired Muscle (#10) cEDH
Would you keep this hand from this cEDH deck by Alacrin ?
Check out this 60-second deck tech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1fPPPEQv-U&list=PLQq0wLNxcNjtGTjrdTQTmLn9cPfPuO0Fn
Deck-list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/dIi8Vn3agk-8G-LMRU18Ew
This hand plays out fast and loose, which is how we want to play this deck. We have a T1 Slicer with the option to jam power equipment to equip on T2, or we can jam Slicer with a Chalice of the Void (which will hurt most decks significantly). In the worst case that Slicer gets removed, we have more than enough starting mana to try again.
Overall, a simple hand that sees us executing our game plan of beating face as fast as possible.

This hand is as explosive as it gets and highlights what a type 1 explosive/proactive deck is looking to do. There are a couple of ways that you could play this hand, but I think the T1 Slicer into a T2 Tangle Wire is the way to go unless you are going last. In that case, I would jam Tangle Wire T1 (especially if the people going before you could develop their boards quickly) and then Jam Slicer T2. That being said, waiting to cast Tangle Wire until T3 may be optimal to maximize the number of permanents that your opponents are tapping.
Overall, this hand is straight fire.

Okay, so this hand only works if you are not going first. You have a T1 Slicer, with a sort of protection from removal in Welding Jar, and you also have a great piece of equipment that you can put on Slicer. The biggest issue is the lack of a solid starting mana base. Normally, we might shy away from this hand if we were playing another deck, but Slicer is a type 1 explosive/proactive deck. We are going all in on being able to get Slicer down early, and this does just that. When playing Slicer the song Shoot to Thrill by AC/DC should be the only thing you are hearing, because that’s the mentality you need to have when deciding to keep a hand.
This hand is STRAIGHT GAS and goes all in on our game plan.

This hand is gas gas gas. It has a T1 slicer and interaction in the form of Anger of the Gods. Even with all this gas, I would pass on this hand if you are playing in a pod where creatures will have little to no game impact, which isn’t too likely in the current meta of cEDH – and even casual play. This hand will play especially well into those greedy Winota decks that derive security because their strategies are creature based. The biggest issue with this hand is that it doesn’t have a plan to stall decks other than those using creatures to execute their game plan. Even so, this isn’t necessarily a bad hand to keep, but you should likely pass it up on a first and second seven and keep it on a six or five.
Overall, this hand depends on the pod and the mulligan point.

This hand has potential, which is honestly the best that we can ask for out of a deck in the mono R identity. We have a T1 Slicer. And a T2 tutor that can get us whatever we need in the moment. That could be something to enable Slicer or a stax card further to slow the development of the board.
Overall, a decent hand that sees you executing your gameplan.

This hand is less than optimal, and I would not keep it at first seven, second seven, or six. While we cast our commander on T2, we won’t have many options regarding staxing the board. We have an Imperial Recruiter that can find an impactful creature like Magnus of the Moon, but the hand needs to include more other pieces.
Overall, a pass at several mulligan points.

This is exactly what you are looking for in an opening hand for this deck. It has a T1 slicer – with the option to cast it for its front face immediately. It has an impactful stax card to slow other decks at the table down early. And it has powerful equipment that can continue to progress your game plan even faster.
Overall, this hand works best when not going first, but it has everything you need to execute your game plan.

As long as you are not going first, This is one of the hands that you need to decide if you want to risk going all in on one thing as quickly as possible. That one thing is going to be Ad Naus. You are uniquely positioned to resolve a turn 2 Ad Naus – without protection, however. The big IF for this hand is whether the literal gamble will pay off for you. By the time you cast Gamble on T2, you have a 25% chance of discarding your Ad Naus and game plan if you play your hand out correctly. Leading up to that 2nd turn gamble, you are just playing out this hand’s fast mana.
This hand is as fast as it gets in cEDH, but you must be willing to risk it all to get there.
I would play this hand out like this:
T0: Put Gemstone Caverns into play, tucking mox diamond (five cards in hand)
T1. Draw for the turn. Play Wooded Foothills (Find Bayou). Play Grim Monolith. (four cards in hand)
T2. Draw for the turn. Play Bad Lands. Now, you have four cards in hand and six mana on board. Use a red mana to cast Gamble, finding your Ad Naus (with a 25% chance to discard it).

This is one of those hands that depends on one thing. And that thing is: are you going first? If not, I would pass up on this hand despite being able to wheel on T1, as you allow other players to play out their hands and develop their boards. Assuming you are playing with rational players, they should be keeping hands that play to their game plans, which means being able to wheel before they take any game actions and disrupt their game start – especially if you are playing against other dedicated explosive decks like The First Silver.
Overall, this hand depends on the pod and turn order– but I would probably not keep this hand as a first or second seven, even if I am going first. I would keep at six and five to disrupt and refill my hand

From a technical perspective, this hand has everything you need to win the game. From an analytical perspective, it’s missing much of what we need to have a successful hand – chiefly the interaction to protect a winning attempt on T3. Because this hand only works if you are keeping it at 7, I would pass it up for something that is more consistent and isn’t as slow or telegraphed. Even so, you might decide to keep this hand in the right pod where interaction with your combo isn’t something you have to worry about. Overall, a mixed-bag hand and most likely a pass over a keep at any mulligan point.
If you do decide to keep this hand at 7, I will play it out like this:
T1. Bayou, Chrome Mox (imprinting soul partition), play Arcane Signet
T2. Play Scrubland, cast food chain
T3. Play Food Chain (pray) and combo out.

This hand defines going fast and eating a**. With this hand, you can go all in on a T2 Ad Naus and then use what you find to protect the rest of your win. There’s not much to say about this hand other than it goes all in on Ad Naus.

Normally, the position you want to be in is one tutor away from a win. We technically are one tutor away from winning the game with this hand, but we need the means to get there with this hand. Furthermore, our creature tutor doesn’t find any meaningful creature to get us to any other part of our combo, leaving our fate up to top decks – which isn’t a place we want to be in with any hand.
Overall, an easy hand to pass up.

Depending on how much you want to risk, this hand sees you casting a T2 Ad Naus from finding it with Gamble. If you discard gamble or your spells get countered, that's it – you don’t have any backup plans, and you will be a nonfactor unless you are blessed with good top decks. A significant issue with this hand is a lack of lean protection to see your game plan through. If you are in a pod where you know you must go as fast as possible, and interaction on the stack isn’t likely, I would keep this hand. In any other pod, this hand is risky, mainly because you are not guaranteed to get Ad Naus from your literal Gamble. The odds are in your favor at a 25% chance to discard Ad Naus.
Overall, a high-risk-high-reward hand.

Would you keep this hand from this cEDH collaborative deck by Eisenherz , Keegan52, Sinivi, and the UrzaServer?
Deck-list (Polymorph): https://www.moxfield.com/decks/kes83-onUU6X_H-RyM8HPw
Deck-list: (Creature Package): https://www.moxfield.com/decks/UCZpPdZhHESE1BgFVge3OA/
This is one of those hands you need to keep at 7, as missing one of these cards breaks the hand. You also need to assess if the pod you are in allows you to keep this hand. It has a lot of what we are looking for, like a fast Urza, lots of early mana, interaction, and a payoff with Recurring Insight.
Considerations you need to make are the chances you can resolve your payoff. While you have interaction with a payoff, you won’t have the mana on T3 to resolve your payoff and protect it unless you draw another mana-positive source by the end of your draw step on T3. If we use the hypergeometric odds, we can see that we have a 29% chance to draw into one of our mana-positive sources that could make this happen. Otherwise, you will be waiting for an opportunity to resolve your Recurring Insight without protection (unless you draw free interaction – which doesn’t raise your odds much).
Overall, this hand depends on your willingness to go fast and risk going all in Recurring Insight.
