"Suez" (Part 2) by Keith Kyle: One Chapter in Middle East History
"Suez: Britain's End of Empire in the Middle East" is a hefty historical tome, that I here hopefully accurately and entertainingly summarize and review, detailing the Suez Crisis of 1956. The scene is post-World War Two Egypt and Palestine, the characters a familiar cast: Britain, Egypt, Israel and France. Learn about but one chapter of the history of the Middle East and background to the present Gaza crisis, with a hypothesis besides: Britain's "End of Empire"?
On the Non-philistine Review yours truly, Nathan Manning of Vancouver, BC, Canada, summarizes and reviews interesting books. And last but not least solicits your observations and opinions. I hope you'll find my reviews informative but entertaining! Man or monster (Part 2)? Review of "John A. Macdonald: The Old Chieftain" by Donald Creighton
Behold the second half of the magisterial, two-volume biography/tome of the ever-embattled John A. Macdonald, first Prime Minister of Canada and humourous rogue of historical proportions--by the ultimate old-school, Balliol College-educated U of Toronto don, Professor Creighton.
His political opponents both hated him and were enchanted by his wit and ever-present humour. His tragic private life made him a notorious drunk. And his record with respect to indigenous peoples?
Creighton's Macdonald here on the Non-philistine Review.

Nationalism vs. globalization? Review of "British Colonial Theories 1570-1850" by Klaus E. Knorr
Nationalism versus globalization, although that's not how they phrased it in past centuries--pretty current.
I summarize here Klaus E. Knorr's compendium of British colonial history in this and other respects. Protectionism ruled for centuries. But it fell to the intellectual sallies of Adam Smith and the classical economists.
