Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg spoke at a press conference following Donald Trump's court hearing.
He said this case is about 34 false statements made to cover up other crimes.
He added that Mr Trump repeatedly made false statements on New York business records and caused others to make false statements.
“These are felony crimes in New York State no matter who you are. We can not and will not normalise serious criminal conduct," Bragg said.
Bragg was the attorney to bring the charges against the former US president.
Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of felony criminal charges during the hearing in New York.

Donald Trump's legal team spoke to reporters outside court in New York.
The former US President's attorney, Todd Blanche, said Mr Trump was "upset" and "frustrated".
Joe Tacopina, another one of Trump's lawyers, said the unsealing of the indictment showed "that the rule of law died in this country".
"While everyone is not above the law, no one is below it either. And if this man's name was not Donald J Trump, there is no scenario we'd all be here today," he added.
They declined to comment on whether Mr Trump was fingerprinted or had a mugshot taken when being processed.
Mr Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony criminal charges during the court hearing.

Donald Trump has been charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, making him the first former US president to face a criminal trial.
Appearing in a Manhattan court, Mr Trump pleaded not guilty after his formal arrest earlier on Tuesday.
The charges stem from an alleged hush-money payment to a porn star in the days before the 2016 presidential election.

Spain’s Catalonia region is experiencing extreme drought.
The Sau reservoir, 100km (about 62 miles) inland from Barcelona, has in recent months become a visible symbol of the situation.
That is because of the sight of the 11th Century church of Sant Romà de Sau, which was submerged when the reservoir was created in 1962.
This part of Catalonia has not seen sustained rain in two-and-a-half years. In early March, the reservoir's water level had dropped to 8% of its capacity.

With Donald Trump set to become the first former US president to face criminal charges, the BBC explores the history of the first sitting US president to be arrested, Ulysses S. Grant.
General Grant, the 18th president of the United States, was known for his love of fast horses – and riding them around the streets of Washington DC, at speed.
And in 1872, that was exactly how he became the only sitting president in US history to be arrested while in office.
But who was the man who arrested him?

Finland to join Nato military alliance on Tuesday – BBC News
Finland will become the 31st member of Nato on Tuesday, the Western military alliance's secretary general has announced.
The application was prompted by the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, with which Finland shares a long border.
Finland's membership is one of the most important moments in Nato's recent history.
Turkey had delayed the application, accusing Finland of embracing Kurdish militants and allowing them to demonstrate on the streets of Stockholm.
Any Nato expansion needs the support of all its members.
