Shadow of the Corsairs - The Face of His Beloved (Historical Action Thriller)
The third book in my Heart of the Corsairs series is something of a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Shadow of the Corsairs is a historical whodunnit, an action thriller about grief, loss, and betrayal. It's also about coming to terms with those things and finding a way to move on.
A prequel to the first two installments in the series, it can also be read as a standalone. However, the tone of Shadow's ending and the cycle of the stories is best appreciated having first read Captive and Revenge.

A Curio for the Count - The Costume Party (Regency Hellfire Club)
A hellfire club is certainly no place for a well brought-up young lady. But antiques expert Jade Bridges, the heroine in my romantic Regency thriller A Curio for the Count, is determined to locate the Thalatte clock for her client. So when the trail leads to the home of Lord Kingston Prendegast, she risks signing up as a serving girl at one of his dubious ‘parties’ so she can slip away to look around the house.
The original 1718 Hellfire Club was actually a satirical ‘gentleman's club’ which admitted men and women as equals to eat, drink, and mock the establishment of the day. But the later version established in 1746 was much more the image we have of them today – a male domain of orgiastic excess featuring food, wine, and paid female ‘guests’.
My favorite depiction of a hellfire club was in the 1966 episode of The Avengers titled A Touch of Brimstone in which Emma Peel and John Steed investigate a secret society re-enacting hellfire activities. It was so risqué that it wasn’t screened in the US and was partially cut for UK television, the entire episode remaining unseen until the 1990s.

Dicing with the Duke - Mean Girls (Regency Romance)
Mean girls aren’t a modern thing – they’ve been around forever. The assembly rooms and ballrooms of Regency England were full of them looking to ruin their rivals’ day. For example – bitchy Lady Sylvia Haughton and her entourage of sharp-tongued harpies picking on socially-awkward Lady Rosaleigh Ayers in the historical romance Dicing with the Duke.

Dicing with the Duke - Timothy (Regency Historical Romance)
Simon Quinn comes to the role of Duke of Witherin after the untimely death of his cousin and best friend, Timothy. It’s a sad happenstance that colors his view of a title he never expected to inherit and a particular requirement that now falls on his shoulders.

The de Wolfe of Wharf Street - Who Was He?
Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel is a tourist destination today. There are day trips and holiday cottages. But you wouldn't have wanted to stay there in the 1600s. Various villains occupied Lundy then, including Barbary pirates who raided ships leaving Bristol to enslave their crews and passengers for sale in Algiers.
I enjoyed creating the athletic proto-parkour expert Gabriel Hardacre who joins a counter-raid on Lundy to rescue the woman he loves.

A Curio for the Count - The Family Silver
Auction day at the Bridges’ sale room brings a mixed bag of items up for disposal from the simply unwanted to goods being converted to desperately needed cash.
Impoverished nobility was not uncommon at any time in history – unfortunate circumstances or poor judgement could leave wealthy and titled families ‘on their uppers’ at any time.
Jane Austen wrote about it in her novels Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion. In the former, the Dashwood sisters and their widowed mother lose the family estate due to bereavement; in the latter, a family’s lavish spending leaves them in disastrous debt. In the late 19th century and into the 20th century, declining income from estates and sweeping societal changes led to the inability of the nobility to maintain lavish houses.
The 1935 romantic comedy film The Ghost Goes West is an amusing take on the struggles of a laird besieged by creditors.

A Curio for the Count - The Decrepit Butler (Regency Romance Mystery Thriller)
When writing a scene for A Curio for the Count in which antiques expert Jade and her brother Edward visit an elderly client to value his huge collection of clocks, I thought it logical that the man’s butler would be equally aged.
Once I realized I was mentally envisaging him as similar to the decrepit retainer Henry from the 1936 crime comedy After The Thin Man, I couldn’t get the image out of my head.
Interestingly, Henry the butler was played (uncredited, no less) by a pioneer of the American movie industry, Tom Ricketts. He played Ebenezer Scrooge in the first US film adaptation of A Christmas Carol in 1908, and directed one of the first films made in Hollywood. He directed dozens of silents before becoming a character actor.
