Council urged to review plans that could lead to UK hosting US nuclear bombs
An attempt by the Ministry of Defence to build a dormitory that could lead to the return of US nuclear weapons to British soil is being challenged by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) because it is being attempted without planning permission. The campaign group has asked West Suffolk council to intervene and insist that the planned 144-bed facility at RAF Lakenheath be subject to an environmental impact assessment or be halted. Work on the dormitory is due to start next year and its purpose is to house the extra US personnel who would be needed to safeguard any return of B-61 air-launched nuclear bombs to Lakenheath for the first time since 2007. Kate Hudson, CND’s general secretary, accused the US air force of ploughing ahead by “purportedly relying on planning rights that assume that the development won’t have significant environmental effects”, and so ignoring the risks that storing nuclear weapons in Suffolk would entail. US nuclear weapons were stationed in the UK throughout the cold war, provoking decades of protest. Cruise missiles were deployed at Greenham Common but were removed from the Berkshire site in 1991. Air-launched gravity bombs remained at Lakenheath until 16 years ago. After three decades of partial disarmament, nuclear states have been gradually upgrading and increasing the size of their arsenals. Two years ago, the UK said it would increase its stockpile of Trident warheads by 40% to 260, while the US is updating its gravity bombs to the B61-12, which has a maximum yield of 50 kilotonnes.

Arab and Muslim leaders blame West for Gaza misery
Hypocrisy, double standards and a failure to understand the region. These are the charges being levelled at the West, primarily the US, by leaders of 57 Arab and Muslim countries who convened at the weekend in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
How is it, foreign ministers said to me, that the West slams Russia for killing civilians in Ukraine, yet, in their words, it "gives a green light to Israel to do the same in Gaza"?
In the luxurious surroundings of Riyadh's Ritz-Carlton hotel, amid giant floral bouquets and glittering chandeliers, and a world away from the shattered landscape of Gaza, princes, presidents and prime ministers met for the Joint Arab Islamic Extraordinary Summit.
Blame for the war and the destruction of lives and property was heaped unilaterally on Israel and its supporters. No-one criticised Hamas for its 7 October raid into southern Israel that killed 1,200 people and saw some 240 taken hostage, triggering the massive military retaliation. Israel, said the secretary general of the Arab League, had committed criminal acts.
"We warn of the disastrous repercussions of the retaliatory aggression by Israel against the Gaza Strip, which amounts to a war crime," said the final communique. "We warn of the real danger of the expansion of the war as a result of Israel's refusal to stop its aggression and of the inability of the [UN] Security Council to enforce international law to end this aggression."
Few people I spoke to at the summit expected Israel to take much notice. Instead, it was clear that this summit and its intended message of unity was aimed at Israel's biggest backer - the United States. Leaders want the Biden administration and the West in general to exert sufficient pressure on Israel to stop the war altogether.
But what they could not agree on was how to achieve that. The summit pulled together some strange bedfellows - an indication of just how worried the region is at events in Gaza spiralling beyond their control.

Government blames data error for figures showing suspects trapped five years in prison without trial
The Ministry of Justice has blamed a data error after it published figures showing that 150 suspects had been trapped in jail for more than five years while awaiting trial. The remand population is currently at its highest in at least 50 years, and is a major driver of prison overcrowding, surging from 9,600 inmates to 16,200 in just four years as the courts backlog soared. Last year, 35 per cent of self-inflicted deaths in prisons were among those on remand. But experts have long warned of a lack of available government data on the issue. Despite judges being required to approve an extension every six months, it has been unclear how long people are spending behind bars before trial – as last-minute court delays increasingly see hearings postponed for months. Against this backdrop, internal government figures, obtained via freedom of information laws by the charity Fair Trials and shared with The Independent in September, appeared to show that at least 150 male suspects – 50 of them Black – had been remanded for 60 months or more, as of 31 December. Asked about their own figures – branded “just extraordinary” and “Kafkaesque” by experts – the Ministry of Justice said at the time: “These cases involving the longest waits mainly involved complex fraud or were trials with a large number of defendants, that ordinarily take a long time to prosecute.”

'Political suicide': Grassroots Tories' fury at Rishi Sunak after sacking Suella Braverman revealed!
Sacking Suella Braverman means "suicide" for the Tory party and Rishi Sunak has just "thrown the election away" according to leaked WhatsApp messages between members of a grassroots Conservative organisation leaked to Sky News. Members of the Conservative Democratic Organisation (CDO), a momentum-style group created out of frustration at the ousting of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss and backed by Priti Patel, called on Tory MPs to submit letters of no confidence in Rishi Sunak after Monday's reshuffle.
Conversations between CDO members on Monday reveal they believe "Sunak has committed political suicide" and "the cabinet is pretty much the exact opposite of what we voted for in 2019" while another asks "is it April Fool's day???" The CDO, whose president is Lord Peter Cruddas, aims to change the rules of the Tory party to give the membership a bigger voice in its running. Sky News has seen messages from regional WhatsApp groups where CDO members give their views on the reshuffle. Many, but not all, are Conservative members, and almost none are nationally recognisable figures so are not being named by Sky News.
These views are not representative, therefore, of the whole Tory membership, but represent a slice of Conservative thinking inside and outside the party. It chimes with some Tory MPs on the right who believe the reshuffle will bolster Reform UK, the right-wing party created from the Brexit Party.

Homeless tents destroyed during Met Police operation
Homeless people's tents in central London have been destroyed during a Met Police operation. Refuse workers threw the tents into the back of their lorry on Huntley Street, Camden, at about 15:00 GMT on Friday. Elodie Berland, who volunteers with outreach organisation Streets Kitchen, recorded the scene after being called there by some of the homeless men.
The Met said it "worked with University College London Hospital and other partners in response to concerns". It is understood that the NHS hospital trust, which has a building entrance on the road, requested the dispersal of rough sleepers but not the destruction of tents. Refuse company Veolia was contacted for comment.

Rishi Sunak urged by senior Tories to back onshore renewable energy rather than oil and gas
Senior Tories have urged Rishi Sunak to back onshore renewable energy rather than off-shore oil and gas after a poll showed strong support for alternative power sources among Conservative voters. A survey on behalf of the Conservative Environment Network (CEN) revealed that 82 per cent of people want to see more renewable energy in the UK, including 77 per cent of Tory voters at the 2019 election, and 81 per cent who plan to vote for the party next time. In last week’s King’s Speech, the Prime Minister made a fresh push for new oil and gas licences in the North Sea. The Government has insisted the expansion is essential to the UK’s energy security and will not affect its Net Zero targets. But former Cabinet minister Sir Simon Clarke argued that the poll results showed there was a “silent majority” in favour of renewables and that backing onshore wind and solar should be at the heart of the Tories’ offer to the electorate. The polling for CEN, by Public First, was conducted in 19 Conservative-held seats, including those where there are existing renewable energy developments.

The Thin Blue Line of Accountability How Citizens are Holding Britain’s Broken Police Forces.
Walk through the Saint Paul’s area of Bristol; you will see ACAB – ‘All Cops Are Bastards’ – graffitied on walls and wheelie bins. The tension between some of this part of the city’s residents and the city’s police force is palpable. In 1980, the area was the scene of civil unrest, which resulted in nineteen policemen and six other people being hospitalised. Many in the community point to the overzealous stop and search policies and armed patrols targeting young black men used by the police as a key factor which led to the disturbances. Some feel the over policing of certain communities in Bristol continues today. “They beat me up, they broke my teeth […] I didn’t get a solicitor. I didn’t know why I was being arrested. I didn’t get read my rights.” Alice’s eyes tell a story of affliction as she recalls an armed raid Avon and Somerset police carried out on her house.
“They took 2 dresses, a bag and a hat, lying to me all throughout the event. I don’t think I would be here if I hadn’t been on the phone with a friend.”
Alice is one of the 81,142 people in this country who have made an official complaint against the police over the last year. Normally when a complaint is made, it is dealt with by that police force’s own professional standards department. Bridget, from Bristol Copwatch tells me how the police are ‘unique in the way that they investigate themselves against any wrongdoing’ and explains how consequently officers are often not held properly to account for their actions.

UK charities ‘near insolvency’ after subsidising public sector contracts
Charities are on the brink of insolvency after subsidising heavily underfunded local authority and NHS contracts to the tune of hundreds of millions of pounds donated to them by the public, voluntary sector leaders have warned. Donations, will legacies and charity shop profits are being used to prop up thousands of state-funded services in danger of closure, including care homes, homeless shelters, addiction projects and physical rehabilitation support schemes. One charity told the Guardian it used £6m a year raised from the public and other donors to subsidise clinical and care services it provided under contract to the NHS and local authorities, a sum it described as “unsustainable”. The refusal of local authorities, the NHS and government departments to fund the real cost of local service contracts – and the built-in assumption that voluntary sector will deliver “on the cheap” – was threatening the existence of vital local services, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) said. “It’s potentially catastrophic for communities if these services stop,” said Sarah Vibert, the chief executive of NCVO. “Many services, like homelessness interventions and support for victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse, wouldn’t currently exist without charities.”

Israel's PM Netanyahu vows to press on against Hamas with 'full force' as 'two babies die'
Two babies have died and dozens more are at risk at Gaza's largest hospital after it ran out of power, Palestinian officials have said. Another patient in intensive care was killed in Israeli shelling that hit the al Shifa hospital in Gaza, the strip's Hamas-run health ministry said. The hospital has had to suspend all operations after it ran out of fuel, spokesperson Ashraf al Qidra said. It comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected growing international calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, saying Israel's battle to crush Hamas militants will continue with "full force".
People in cities across the world, including in the UK, marched on Saturday, calling for a ceasefire - which Mr Netanyahu has rejected and a number of Western governments - including those in the US and UK - have said will allow Hamas to regroup. A ceasefire would be possible only if all 239 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza are released, Mr Netanyahu said in a televised address on Saturday.

Fake audio of Sadiq Khan is not a crime, says Met
Deepfake audio of Sadiq Khan that has circulated on social media "does not constitute a criminal offence", the Metropolitan Police has said. The digitally generated audio, using the London mayor's voice and mannerisms, purports to be a recording of him playing down the importance of Remembrance weekend commemorations. A spokesman for the mayor said the Met Police was "aware of this fake video that is being circulated and amplified on social media by far-right groups, and are actively investigating". Follow latest: Hundreds of thousands join pro-Palestinian march in London But in a statement to Sky News, a Met Police spokesperson said: "We can confirm that we were made aware of a video featuring artificial audio of the mayor.
"Specialist officers have reviewed this video and assessed that it does not constitute a criminal offence."

Far-right protesters shouting 'England 'til I die' clash with police - as more than 80 arrests made
Those detained were "part of a large group of counter protestors we have been monitoring who have tried to reach the main protest march". It comes after there were violent scenes when a large mob of people carrying St George's flags was seen walking along Embankment and shouting "England 'til I die". A line of police attempted to stop them from reaching Whitehall but the group pushed through, with some shouting "let's have them" as officers responded with batons.

Birmingham city council ignored bankruptcy warning signs, says expert
Councillors at Birmingham city council “ignored the warning signs” of its financial crisis and caused a “self-inflicted” disaster that will take years of cuts to rectify, according to the lead government commissioner drafted in to help. Local government expert Max Caller, who has been nicknamed Max the Axe for his unsparing approach to budget cuts, was lured out of retirement to take on the task of fixing England’s largest local authority after it effectively declared itself bankrupt. “They should never have done this. They ignored the warning signs, crashed on regardless and they have created themselves a controlled disaster,” said Caller, who is five weeks into the task of pulling the local authority from the financial brink. The council issued a section 114 notice in September, largely due to a rapidly escalating equal pay claim bill of at least £760m and problems implementing a new IT system costing £100m. “There will be job losses, it’s inevitable. There will be some services that will no longer run, it’s inevitable,” Caller said. “It won’t be easy. It will be painful, and some things will get worse before they get better. But it will be a smaller, more focused operation at the end of it.”

Revealed BBC failed to declare interviewee’s links to the Israeli army
BBC Newsnight failed to declare that a military expert it presented as an independent commentator is a director of a charity bankrolled by the Israeli army. Appearing on the BBC’s flagship daily news and current affairs programme last week to discuss the war in Gaza and pro-Palestine marches in the UK, Colonel Richard Kemp was introduced as “a former army officer and terrorism expert who sat on the government’s Joint Intelligence Committee”. But what host Kirsty Wark did not mention was that Kemp is also a director and trustee of an organisation that both raises money for and is funded by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). The findings were made by Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), a London-based charity that records, investigates and disseminates evidence of armed violence against civilians worldwide.

Poppy sellers missing from major stations after pro Palestinian protest chaos
UPDATED: Police have dropped investigations into an alleged attack on a 78-year-old poppy seller during a pro-Palestinian rally due to "insufficient evidence". BBC News
Poppy Appeal stalls have been missing from several major transport hubs as police investigate an alleged assault on a veteran selling poppies at a train station during a pro-Palestinian rally. British Transport Police said it was investigating claims that Jim Henderson, a 78-year-old Northern Ireland veteran, was punched and shoved while trying to clear away his stall on Saturday as protesters massed in Edinburgh’s Waverley station. The alleged incident drew the attention of Downing Street as senior Conservatives continued to raise concerns about protests over the Israel-Hamas conflict due to take place on Armistice Day on Saturday. A spokesman for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described the claimed assault on Mr Henderson as “repulsive”.

Met police detective who sent racist messages allowed to keep her job
A Metropolitan police detective who was found guilty of sending racist messages via WhatsApp has been allowed to keep her job, the Guardian has learned. DS Victoria Teagle was investigated over the messages sent to her then partner, who eventually reported them to police professional standards’ investigators. A hearing was held earlier this year and concluded a fortnight ago by finding the detective’s behaviour had fallen below the standards of the professional behaviour expected from police officers, relating to conduct and authority, and respect and courtesy. The outcome of the case had not been made public. Teagle was found guilty of gross misconduct by a disciplinary panel, and has received a final written warning, which will last three years, the Met has confirmed. Gross misconduct carries a maximum penalty of dismissal without notice and being placed on a list barring people from future employment in policing.
The decision to let Teagle stay has caused outrage among some in policing, who believe it undermines promises by the Met commissioner, Mark Rowley, to rid his force of discrimination.

Robert Jenrick stops charity giving asylum seekers clothes, haircuts and legal help!
The Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick has blocked a charity from supporting asylum seekers staying in Home Office accommodation, i can reveal. Refugee charity Care4Calais has been stopped from visiting asylum seekers at Napier Barracks, where it offers individuals legal and emotional support. The legal clinics help asylum seekers to understand letters they have received from the Home Office about their claims or about possible deportation to Rwanda. Care4Calais had been helping asylum seekers at the accommodation centre in Kent since 2020, before being abruptly told by Clearsprings Ready Homes, the contractor running the site, that it could no longer offer its services at the end of September. It said it was not given a reason for the decision. The charity has also been blocked from entering RAF Wethersfield, another asylum seeker accommodation site, to give haircuts, clothes and shoes. It is instead having to use a local church several miles away. Internal emails, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act and seen by i, reveal the instructions came directly from Mr Jenrick’s office. This year he was criticised after telling staff at an asylum reception centre to paint over wall art depicting Mickey Mouse, designed to provide a “welcoming” atmosphere for children.

Suella Braverman undermining confidence in police, Tory MPs claim in leaked messages!
Suella Braverman and Tory critics of the police are undermining public confidence in law enforcement and eroding trust in Britain's system of democracy, according to heated WhatsApp exchanges among Conservative MPs leaked to Sky News. The true scale of the civil war between Tory MPs over the policing of pro-Palestinian marches and behaviour of the home secretary is tonight revealed in dozens of private messages between them which lift the lid on a far greater scale of discontent in the party than is currently playing out in public. The angry WhatsApp debate has led to angry exchanges between figures who both back and oppose Ms Braverman, with some accusing her Tory critics of helping Labour, while others are accused of inflaming the far right.

Iran warns expansion of Gaza war 'inevitable'; officials say air strikes hit hospitals
Iran warned the scale of civilian suffering caused by Israel's war on Hamas would inevitably lead to an expansion of the conflict, as officials in Gaza reported Israeli air strikes on or near several hospitals in the Palestinian enclave.
The comments from Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian could ramp up concerns over whether Washington's diplomatic efforts and deployment of U.S. naval forces to the eastern Mediterranean will be able to keep the conflict from further destabilising the Middle East.
"Due to the expansion of the intensity of the war against Gaza's civilian residents, expansion of the scope of the war has become inevitable," Amir-Abdollahian told his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Thursday night.
Iran's state-run Press TV reported the comments, made during a telephone conversation, on Friday.
Israel's bombardment and siege of Gaza over the past month has created a humanitarian catastrophe with thousands seeking medical treatment and shelter in the few hospitals still open, with those in the combat zone operating in grave danger.

'I’m calling from Israeli intelligence. We have the order to bomb. You have two hours'
This video is calling on the story of Mahmoud Shaheen and the lives he saved.
The call to Mahmoud Shaheen came at dawn.
It was Thursday 19 October at about 06:30, and Israel had been bombing Gaza for 12 days straight. He'd been in his third-floor, three-bedroom flat in al-Zahra, a middle-class area in the north of the Gaza Strip. Until now, it had been largely untouched by air strikes. He'd heard a rising clamour outside. People were screaming. "You need to escape," somebody in the street shouted, "because they will bomb the towers". As he left his building and crossed the road, looking for a safe place, his phone lit up. It was a call from a private number. "I'm speaking with you from Israeli intelligence," a man said down the line, according to Mahmoud. That call would last more than an hour - and it would be the most terrifying call of his life.

11 councillors quit Labour over stance on ceasefire in Gaza!
The leader of Burnley Council and 10 other councillors have resigned from the Labour Party over Sir Keir Starmer's decision not to push for a ceasefire in Gaza, Sky News understands. Afrasiab Anwar, who has been in the party for 10 years, said it had been a "really difficult decision" to leave Labour.
He was among those calling for Sir Keir to step down on Thursday.
The 11 councillors described their memberships as "untenable" given the leadership's refusal to demand a ceasefire in the Middle East. In a statement, they said Sir Keir had indicated he "does not value the voice of the grassroots of the party" - citing remarks the opposition leader made following a speech on Friday in the North East. Sir Keir, who has come under internal pressure for Labour to demand a cessation of hostilities, told reporters his focus was on stopping the suffering in Gaza, not on the "individual positions" of party members. Labour has backed the UK government's stance of calling for a pause in the fighting to allow humanitarian aid and medical treatments to reach Palestinians in Gaza.

Monarch booed by protesters after setting out Rishi Sunak's political agenda in King's Speech
The King was booed by protestors as he left parliament after outlining Rishi Sunak's legislative agenda for the year ahead. Tougher sentences for the country's most serious offenders and a crackdown on grooming took centre stage in the first King's Speech in decades. The King struck a personal note when he began his speech - the first by a king in over 70 years - by acknowledging the "legacy of service and devotion to this country" shown by his "beloved mother, the late Queen". Reading out Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's agenda for the upcoming year, the King said the Sentencing Bill would be brought forward to "increase the confidence of victims". Further measures would also be introduced to give police more powers to "prevent new and complex crimes" and child sexual abuse, he added.

Energy secretary admits Rishi Sunak’s north sea oil expansion plans ‘won’t bring bills down’
The energy secretary has admitted that Rishi Sunak’s flagship energy policy will not bring household bills down. Claire Coutinho was quizzed about the government’s plans to expand North Sea oil and gas exploration expected to be announced in the King’s Speech tomorrow. The prime minister will declare the drive, which would invite annual applications for new licences to drill for oil and gas, will protect jobs and boost energy security “without adding undue burdens on households”. But as families continue to grapple with sky-high energy bills, Ms Couthinho admitted the plans "wouldn’t necessarily bring energy bills down". She said the measures were more to ensure "security" of energy supply, telling BBC Breakfast: "It wouldn’t necessarily bring energy bills down, that’s not what we’re saying, but it would as I say raise a significant amount of money that would help us for example fund public services, also fund transition into different forms of energy, for example, things like offshore wind and solar energy which more broadly and indirectly could help bring bills down."

Time to Tackle ‘Dark Money’ in Politics – As Voters Demand Transparency Over Britain’s Opaque Thinks
Voters believe Britain’s think tanks – the policy-writing research houses that often have charitable status – are opaque and need to open up about their funding, according to new polling. A majority (59%) of the British public believe think tanks are not transparent, with only 19% of respondents disagreeing, Deltapoll polling for the Centre and Millbank Think Tanks has found. A majority of people believe think tanks lack transparency in every area of the UK included in the poll. It goes for people of all ages, political leanings, voting intentions and social classes, with clear majorities for reform whichever side of the Brexit debate voters fall. The research comes amid a growing debate about the role of Britain’s policy research organisations. The findings appear in ‘Follow the Money’, a new report by Centre Think Tank delving into the scale of so-called ‘dark money’ – donations of unknown origin – fuelling UK think tanks, details of which Byline Times can exclusively share.
