Israel has not informed UN agency of any concrete concerns relating to staff since 2011, independent review finds. Israeli authorities have not provided "any supporting evidence" to back up allegations that United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees employees are members of groups that attacked Israel on 7 October, a review led by the former French foreign minister Catherine Colonna has said. The Colonna report, which was commissioned by the UN to look at Unrwa's operations and policies in the wake of Israel's allegations and will be released on Monday, said Israeli authorities have not responded to letters Unrwa in March and April requesting names and evidence in order to open an investigation. The Israeli government, according to the independent review, "has not informed Unrwa of any concrete concerns relating to Unrwa staff since 2011". In late January, Israel accused 12 Unrwa employees of participating in the 7 October attack on Israel in which 1,200 people were killed. Israeli leaders on Sunday harshly criticized an expected decision by the U.S. to impose sanctions on a unit of ultra-Orthodox soldiers in the Israeli military. Hungary will use its veto power if necessary once it assumes the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU. The country is scheduled to take over the Council on 1 July, succeeding Belgium. As presidency holder, Hungary will be in charge of setting the political agenda, moderating talks among member states and representing the institution vis-a-vis the European Parliament and the European Commission. Seoul and Pyongyang are in a race to put more reconnaissance satellites into orbit amid rising tensions on the peninsula. South Korea has successfully launched its second military reconnaissance satellite, days after North Korea reiterated its intention to launch multiple spy satellites this year. The satellite entered orbit after its launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the John F Kennedy Space Center in Florida in the United States on Sunday, South Korea’s National Ministry of Defense said. Seoul’s military said in a statement that its “independent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities have been further strengthened” by the successful launch. “We will proceed with future satellite launches without a hitch,” it added. The Falcon 9 rocket was launched at 23:17 GMT and the satellite successfully separated from the launch vehicle 45 minutes later and entered its targeted orbit, according to the statement. Iran tipped off Russia about the possibility of a major "terrorist operation" on its soil ahead of the concert hall massacre near Moscow last month, three sources familiar with the matter said. In the deadliest attack inside Russia in 20 years, gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons at concertgoers on March 22 at the Crocus City Hall, killing at least 144 people in violence claimed by the Islamic State militant group. ‘Combat’ or ‘kill’ zones designed to target fighters have indiscriminately targeted civilians who enter these zones. The Israeli army has created “kill zones” that have targeted and indiscriminately killed civilians in the Gaza Strip, according to a new report. Senior army officials and soldiers who have served on the frontlines confirmed to Haaretz that its forces had killed civilians and later claimed they were terrorists because they were in a particular area designated as a so-called "combat zone". “It's astonishing to hear the reports after every operation regarding how many terrorists were killed," a senior officer within the army’s southern command told Haaretz. “You don't need to be a genius to realise that you don't have hundreds or dozens of armed men running through the streets of Khan Younis or Jabaliya, fighting the IDF." Officers also admitted to Haaretz that some of the Palestinians killed in so-called “combat” or “kill” zones may have been going back to their homes or searching for food as fears of a famine in northern Gaza continue to mount. The soldiers explained to Haaretz that the “combat” zone is where a group of soldiers set up inside an abandoned house, with the surrounding area designated as a combat zone. The soldiers then use observation posts outside the Gaza Strip to observe the area and determine what is deemed a danger. Dozens of migrants found in a wooden boat in the Mediterranean Sea between northern Africa and southern Europe have been transported to the Greek island of Crete, Greece’s coast guard said Monday. Crete has recently seen a rise in migrant arrivals from Libya, which Greece’s government promised Monday to address with more funding and extra coast guard personnel. The boat with 74 people on board was found late Sunday 25 nautical miles (46 kilometers, 29 miles) south of the small Greek island of Gavdos on Sunday night, the coast guard said, adding that a patrol boat transported the 73 men and one woman to Crete. It was not immediately clear where or when the boat had launched or what countries the passengers were from. No injuries or illnesses were reported among them. They were taken to a temporary shelter. Port Said governor defends the demolition of El-Gameel neighbourhood as part of development plans. But residents and legal experts have another story to tell. On a sunny spring day in Egypt’s Mediterranean city of Port Said, a woman stood on the top floor of her home, watching as a bulldozer demolished it, balcony by balcony. “I still cannot believe that I am alive. The house could have collapsed and I would have died,” Ragaa Muharram Ali, a medical scan specialist, told Middle East Eye, a week after a video documenting the incident went viral online. “But even if I survived, being forcibly evicted from my family’s home is like taking my life away,” she added. On Thursday 14 March, the house was fully demolished. Ragaa is among hundreds of residents of El-Gameel neighbourhood in Port Said, whose homes have been razed or are slated for imminent removal to pave way for investments on the prime beachfront land. The demolition began in early February and continues unabated as of the time of this report. According to the residents who spoke with MEE, 290 homes were demolished and approximately 25 homes remain, whose owners await the same fate. The El-Gameel neighbourhood in western Port Said was built in 1978, when the governorate allocated 317 pieces of land located directly on the Mediterranean coast, 10km from the city, to alleviate pressure on other overpopulated parts of the governorate, according to the El-Gameel Environmental Protection and Development Association. The residents built their homes on the land with their own funds, with permits from the governorate, under a usufruct arrangement. Mexico’s president said Friday he won’t fight Mexican drug cartels on U.S. orders, in the clearest explanation yet of his refusal to confront the gangs. Over the years, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has laid out various justifications for his “hugs, not bullets” policy of avoiding clashes with the cartels. In the past he has said “you cannot fight violence with violence,” and on other occasions he has argued the government has to address “the causes” of drug cartel violence, ascribing them to poverty or a lack of opportunities. But on Friday, while discussing his refusal to go after the cartels, he made it clear he viewed it as part of what he called a “Mexico First” policy. “We are not going to act as policemen for any foreign government,” López Obrador said at his daily news briefing. “Mexico First. Our home comes first.” López Obrador basically argued that drugs were a U.S. problem, not a Mexican one. He offered to help limit the flow of drugs into the United States, but only, he said, on humanitarian grounds. “Of course we are going to cooperate in fighting drugs, above all because it has become a very sensitive, very sad humanitarian issue, because a lot of young people are dying in the United States because of fentanyl,” the president said. Venezuela's parliament has approved a law creating a federal state in the disputed oil-rich area of Essequibo across the border in Guyana, which on Friday slammed a "flagrant violation" of its sovereignty. "This National Assembly vindicates the right of the Venezuelan people to defend their territory," said MP Diosdado Cabello after the vote to make Essequibo the 24th state in the country. The law that was passed has been submitted to the Supreme Court to validate its constitutionality. Guyana's foreign ministry said in a statement the government was "gravely concerned over the adoption of a law by the Venezuelan National Assembly declaring the Essequibo region ... to be a constituent part of Venezuela." On a visit to the Rafah crossing, Antonio Guterres urges Israel to give people in Gaza unfettered access to humanitarian aid. The line of blocked aid trucks stuck on Egypt’s side of the border with the Gaza Strip while Palestinians face starvation on the other side is a “moral outrage”, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on a visit to the Rafah crossing. “I have come to Rafah to shine a spotlight on the pain of Palestinians in Gaza,” the UN chief said on Saturday, addressing a news conference in El Arish, in Egypt’s northern Sinai, where much of the international relief for Gaza is stockpiled as Israel continues to block aid from entering. “Here, from this crossing, we see the heartbreak and heartlessness of it all. A long line of blocked relief trucks on one side of the gates, the long shadow of starvation on the other,” he said. “That is more than tragic. It is a moral outrage. SpaceX is building a network of hundreds of spy satellites under a classified contract with a U.S. intelligence agency, five sources familiar with the program said, demonstrating deepening ties between billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk's space company and national security agencies. Former President Jair Bolsonaro presented top Brazilian military leaders with a plan to stage a coup after he lost the 2022 election, newly released court documents have alleged. The country’s Supreme Court released the testimonies from former army commander Marco Antonio Freire Gomes and former air force commander Carlos de Almeida Baptista Jr. to the Brazilian Federal Police on Friday. Bolsonaro allegedly presented the plan in a meeting on December 7, 2022, at the presidential palace in Brasilia. In their testimonies, both Gomes and Baptista Jr. said they refused to carry out Bolsonaro’s alleged plan to stay in power and threatened to arrest him, documents show. Bolsonaro surrendered his passport to authorities in early February as part of a police investigation into an alleged coup attempt. The former president has denied the allegations. Capture of crucial site marks turnaround in fortunes for Sudanense Armed Forces over last month. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have claimed control of the national broadcast building in the city of Ondurman from their rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF).The paramilitary RSF captured the site in the first days of the war almost a year ago. The RSF's loss of the important piece of national infrastructure is the latest in a string of victories claimed by the army. Footage posted by the army showed some of its troops within a kilometre of the radio and TV building cheering after seizing vehicles and weapons. Since late January, the SAF had been concentrating its efforts in Omdurman and Bahri, cities that lie across the White Nile and Blue Nile rivers from the capital Khartoum. There have been no medical evacuations from northern Gaza for more than a month so severely injured people are trapped in damaged hospitals where they cannot get adequate treatment, a leading medical charity has warned. Ambulances need urgent access to take the most vulnerable patients for specialist care, said Patrick Münz, head of mission in Gaza for German medical charity Cadus. There are no intensive care units operating in northern Gaza, so Palestinians most seriously injured in Israeli airstrikes and fighting on the ground have died. But dozens of patients in the two functioning hospitals in Gaza City have been stabilised after amputations or with severe burns, and could survive if they got treatment in Rafah or beyond Gaza. Chae-ran made her first escape after finishing high school. She’d been assigned a job at a coal mine, like her father and most people in their village near the Chinese border – but the teenager didn’t want to spend her life doing hard labor, deep underground. She’d seen other villagers crossing the river that separates North Korea from China to find work and wanted to help support her family. So, one day, without telling her mother, she and a friend left home with the help of a broker – people who plan and facilitate the journey out of North Korea for a fee. She remembers it was early evening in autumn; the sky was still light when she crossed the river. Presidential candidates in Senegal kicked off their election campaigns on Saturday, following weeks of violent protests across the African country after the vote was delayed. The 19 approved candidates vying for the top job now have a shorter period to rally supporters ahead of the March 24 election, expected to be the most tightly contested race since Senegal gained independence more than six decades ago. The former mayor of Dakar, Khalifa Sall, who is running for the fourth time, organized a marching caravan through the streets of the capital to begin his campaign. The front-runners will likely be former Prime Minister Amadou Ba as the ruling party's choice, and imprisoned Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a lesser known candidate who gained popularity as the chief of the dissolved PASTEF party. Diomaye Faye has been behind bars for nearly a year but is due to be released in time for elections after the president passed a decree to exonerate political prisoners. He has stepped in for opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, also in prison and who has been barred from running. In June, Sonko was charged with corrupting youth and sentenced to two years in prison.
