Beasthorn retrievable redirect for SRS tree climbing
Dan demonstrates a great retrievable redirect for SRS (stationary rope system) / SRT (Single rope technique) that was thought up by Joe Drinkhorn. This technique allows the climber to redirect around a limb with the ability to pull out the redirect from anywhere in the tree that is safe to lanyard in, or on the ground. The redirect itself takes no additional hardware, just a carabiner clipped to the rope to retrieve the redirect.

The best knee ascender design ever!!!
Dan shows you the knee ascender design he created and has been using for the past 5 years. This knee ascender design has a huge advantage over the traditional knee ascenders on the market, as this design can be left attached to the leg for the duration of the climb allowing the climber to use the knee ascender and foot ascender together on many occasions throughout the climb where necessary.
Dan explains how you can make one of these ascenders yourself, and shares his experiences using the devices.

Climbing Arborist podcast #15 - with David Anderson of Canopy watch
Podcast sponsored by Wesspur tree equipment, go to http://www.wesspur.com/climbing-arborist.html Use the promo code 'POD' or 'CA-Shirt' for a special podcast offer.
David is an Ornithologist, biologist and tree climber. David explains how the thought of some tropical birds never being visible from the forest floor gave him the passion to learn to climb trees. David talks about how he was first introduced to tree climbing and the mehtods he used, setting lines with a crossbow and using ascenders to access the canopy of tropical trees in the 90's. He talks about meeting the guys from 'Ascending the giants' in Portland, Oregon, and how they taught him many modern day tree climbing techniques. David now teaches other biologists and scientisits the art of safely and efficiently accessing the canopy of tropical trees in the hope this will be huge for the study of plants and animals in the canopies of the tropical rainforest.

Stuck friction saver retrieval with throwline
Do you ever have one of those days when things just won’t go right?
The next time you have one of those days and your friction saver doesn’t come down, pull this little party trick out and impress the rest of your crew.
In this video we show you 2 method of rescuing your friction saver from the ground.
The first method is for when the friction saver gets stuck in a fork or caught on a stub.
The second method is for when you forget to attach a retrieval ball and pull your rope out but the friction saver stays in the tree.

How we remove a tree #3 : The fundamentals
Dan and Ryan take on this simple Katsura tree removal. The tree is fairly close to the buildings on the south side, over the top of gardens and fences. On the north side is a large open grassed area that is perfect for a drop zone. Dan talks through his plan and his processes as he works through this removal using the basic fundamentals for removing a tree. Dan explains why in most cases the lower branches should be removed first and the arborist works up removing the canopy. He also explains how you can maximize efficiency when using your second tie in point by thinking ahead about how branches can be reached a specific 2nd tie in point. In this video you will see the good work positioning which prevent the climber from straining and using tools at full stretch, but instead the handsaw and chainsaw are used in a position of full control and strength.

REVIEW Husqvarna T536 LiXP battery chainsaw
In this in depth review of the Husqvarna T536LiXP we discuss all the pro and cons of this saw.
After using this chainsaw every week for the past year Dan has strong opinions about the Husqvarna battery powered chainsaw within modern day arboriculture for climbing arborists.
Dan discusses the battery options and the weight of the saw. Dan discusses when and where he decides to use the battery chainsaw, and when he decides to use a more powerful 2-stroke top handled chainsaw.
Dan starts by discussing the downsides to the saw in the form of , the saw not having the ability to easily make a plunge cut, the difference in the ability to feather the throttle compared to a 2-stroke chainsaw, and the history of some consumers having issues with water damage to the saw.
Dan runs through all the factors that he sees as positives when using the saw, the weight of the saw (11:27), the reduced noise (11:57), no pull start (13:00), No idling engine (13:20), no 2-stroke fuel fumes (15:47), greatly reduced vibrations (16:42), saving on fuel costs (17:55), less maintenance (19:06), battery life (20:33), summary (22:44).

How we take down a tree #2 : Simple Birch tree removal
Justin and Dan remove this Birch tree that is riddled with ‘Bronze Birch borer’. This is a very simple and straight forward tree removal job for two men. The guys do some simple light rigging of branches over the hedge to prevent damage and into neighbour’s garden. The client’s garden has soil around the base of the trunk and lawn for the majority of the front garden. Justin drops many branches into the clients front garden which are left in situ to absorb some of the impact from logs that will be dropped when blocking the trunk down in small sections.

How we take down a tree #1 : Tree removal using a basic speedline
In this video we explain how we take down a Douglas Fir tree close to a house. We explain our thought process for using a very basic speed line setup, why we base anchor the speed line , and then explain why the branches are removed in a certain sequence to enable the speed line to work in the best way.
Every single tree presents different problems, has different objects to avoid in its own unique landscape. There are many different ways to take down a tree, we always try to focus on efficiency, and we like to share our thought process with you.

Climbing Arborist podcast #13 - With Kevin Bingham, inventor of the rope wrench
Kevin Bingham is most well known in the industry for the invention of the rope wrench and then the rope runner that followed. It can be argued that Kevin single handedly evolved tree climbing as arborists know it today with the invention of the rope wench. Before the wrench arborists would use SRT for accessing the tree only (with the exception of a few using the Unicender for SRT). The rope wrench has certainly changed climbing for the masses, and many products & techniques have come about because single rope work positioning is now possible.
In this episode Kevin talks about how the idea of climbing on a stationary rope came about, and seemed more efficient for a specific job, and how this got him thinking about how to create a device to solve the problem (7:10), Treemagineers giving Kevin the idea for the stiff tether attempting to use it in competition climbing (41:50), inventing the rope runner and using the local makerspace (54:50), climbing on 2 separate climbing lines simultaneously (1:14:45), using a lanyard for good work positioning and not being lazy by using 1 hand on the chainsaw (1:28:55), climbing at the 2019 ITCC in Knoxville (1:35:25).

Airspade around tree roots
Here is a link to the Airspade we used. https://amzn.to/2DGltaY
This job started out with the aim of finding a broken water pipe, best guess was it had broken at the exit from the building. After being unable to find the pipe, we moved on to plan B, this was to dig a trench along side the building and the down the garden between the trees for laying a new water line to the guest house at the bottom of the property. The airspade was extremely useful for this specific work, as we had to remove much of the small fibrous roots, but wanted to leave as much intact as was feasible. The excavation that was done with the Airspade was necessary, and made it as easy as it could have been. Using another method for excavation would have meant much more damage to the tree roots.

Reduction tree pruning & revisit after 1 year : How would you have pruned it?
Dan is called in to prune a Robinia pseudoacacia tree, with the aim of reducing the tree so that it can be maintained on a 3-4 yearly cycle. Due to the small rear garden and limited space, the goal is to never let the tree get larger than it is prior to pruning.
Dan explains his plan and approach to the pruning work, you will see the choices he makes as he prunes the tree, and finally Dan will revisits the property 1 year on to see the results and response from the tree.
#ClimbingArborist #Arborist #TreePruning
Revisiting trees that we prune is such a valuable learning tool for any arborist. We get to see how different species react to different types of pruning, and we can then use this knowledge for future pruning.
We hope to compile more and more of this type of video in which we revisit the property and discuss the response from the tree.

Climbing Arborist podcast #11 - with Dan Holliday on safe use of chainsaws in the canopy
Dan goes solo on this podcast after giving a couple of presentations on the topic of safe use of chainsaws in the canopy and good work positioning. This subject is one that Dan is very passionate about, and is also one that causes many disagreements among arborists, employees and employers. Arboriculture as an industry has an extremely high incident and injury rate compared to most other industries. The reason being is, there are so many risks that we are faced with in the industry, but the majority of these risks can be mitigated. So why is it that when it comes to some of the more serious risks like cutting ourselves with chainsaws or falling from height, that many people are willing to take chances and expose themselves to more of a risk than is necessary.
There are so many people that can and will be affected by an injury, family, friends, co-workers etc, some of these people depend on you, would you really want to put them in a situation were you depend on the for physical, emotional and financial support?
Once you have listened to this podcast, please take my challenge of trying 2 hands on the chainsaw and 2 Tie in points for 6 weeks, I promise you, you will make huge strides in the way you climb, and become a much better, safer and more efficient climber because of it.

Rigging in the rain : Hemlock tree removal
We were contracted in to remove two Western Hemlock trees from the rear/side of a house. The access down the side of the house was very tight, so we decided the best method and most efficient way for the removal of the trees was to use a controlled speed line/slide line for both the branches and for the trunk wood. The slideline was back tied to ensure each individual tree wasn't exposed to too much side loading.

Canopy reduction tree pruning
Dan has 2 medium sized Cherry trees that the client wants reducing in size before they get to large for their location. Dan explains his thought process while undertaking this type of job, how to select a pruning location, and how to keep the tree looking natural and giving it shape.
A height and spread reduction of a tree canopy is a very important skill to have as an arborist, and one that takes time to become proficient at. Trees in the urban environment require maintenance in order to keep the for many years to come without them causing various potential problems, reducing the canopy is one type of tree pruning that can be used if done correctly.

Clove hitch | Knot tying for Arborists
The Clove hitch is a really good knot with many uses, it is a great knot for cinching down onto round objects e.g a pole pruner. It is quick and simple to tie, and easily adjustable which makes it useful for using as a static redirect on a carabiner and webbing sling.
