Julian Assange Talks Chelsea Manning and the Media in Rare Interview
Video date: Aug 7, 2013
In the buildup to Julian Assange's run for the Australian senate, VICE was invited to the Ecuadorian embassy in London for a rare in-person interview. Our visit coincided with the conviction of Chelsea (then Bradley) Manning, the young US Army private whose alleged espionage put WikiLeaks on the map. Assange spoke to us about political payback, his plans for freeing the most famous whistle-blower in history, and why the world needs a WikiLeaks political party.

The Belmarsh Tribunal New York City
The Belmarsh Tribunal New York City - Streamed live on Feb 26, 2022 by the People's Forum NYC.
Inspired by the Russell-Sartre Tribunals of the late 1960s, which put the US government on trial for its war crimes in Vietnam, the Belmarsh Tribunal will expose the crimes of the so-called War on Terror 20 years after the first prisoners were brought to Guantánamo Bay — and call for Assange’s freedom.
The event — convened in partnership with DiEM25, the Courage Foundation, The People’s Forum, DSA International Committee, The Intercept, People’s Dispatch and the International People’s Assembly — will be chaired by philosopher Srećko Horvat and civil rights attorney Margaret Kunstler. Witnesses will include: Alice Walker, Angela Richter, Austin González, Balthesar Garzón, Chip Gibbons, Chris Hedges, Clare Daly, Claudia De la Cruz, Cornel West, Deborah Hrbek, Golriz Ghahraman, Guillaume Long, Jeremy Scahill, Jodi Dean, Milo Rau, Nancy Hollander, Nathan Fuller, Nick Estes, Noam Chomsky, Renata Avila, Roger Waters, Sevim Dagdalen, Srećko Horvat, Steven Donziger, Vijay Prashad, and Yanis Varoufakis.
The Belmarsh Tribunal coincides with the 20th anniversary of the opening of the concentration camp at occupied Guantánamo Bay on Cuba’s southeastern shore. In January 2002, the first 20 detainees arrived at the site. Since then, 779 Muslim men and boys from 49 countries have been held there. The youngest detainee was just 14 when he arrived. The oldest was 89. Over years and decades, detainees faced torture, ritual humiliation, and the uncertainty of prolonged detention without charges or trial.
Two decades after the facility opened its doors, 39 people continue to languish at Guantánamo, 27 of them without charge — “eternal prisoners” with little hope for release, and no prospects for justice. Many of them remain confined for the simple reason that their release would allow them to testify to the brutal treatment they endured.
Classified documents leaked by Chelsea Manning and published by Wikileaks in 2011 revealed the grim contours of the US regime of detention and torture at Guantánamo. Many prisoners — among them a journalist from Al Jazeera — were held for years despite officially posing no threat to the US. Many developed severe mental health problems as a result of their treatment. Some committed suicide.
But, today, it is not the perpetrators who face persecution, but the whistleblowers. In April this year, Julian Assange will enter his third year of detention at HMP Belmarsh — a maximum-security prison, sometimes referred to as “Britain’s Guantánamo”, that was infamously used to detain terrorist suspects without trial — as he seeks to appeal a court decision to extradite him to the US.
On 25 February 2022, at the People’s Forum in New York City, we will convene legal experts, UN representatives, whistleblowers, journalists, and many others to investigate and expose the crimes of the so-called War on Terror, to seek justice for its victims, and to demand the closure of the concentration camp at Guantánamo Bay.

The Plot to Kill Julian Assange Report Reveals CIA’s Plan to Kidnap, Assassinate WikiLeaks Founder
The Plot to Kill Julian Assange Report Reveals CIA’s Plan to Kidnap, Assassinate WikiLeaks Founder
Did the CIA under the Trump administration plan to kidnap and assassinate WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange during a shootout in London? That is one of the explosive findings in a new exposé by Yahoo News that details how the CIA considered abducting and possibly murdering Assange while he took refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to avoid being extradited to Sweden for rape allegations, charges that were dropped in 2017. More than 30 former officials say former CIA Director Mike Pompeo was apparently motivated to get even with WikiLeaks following its publication of sensitive CIA hacking tools, which the agency considered “the largest data loss in CIA history.” Michael Isikoff, chief investigative correspondent for Yahoo News, lays out the plans and describes how the abduction plan “was one of the most contentious intelligence debates of the entire Trump era,” noting it ultimately spurred the Justice Department to fast-track its legal case against Assange. We also speak with Assange’s legal adviser Jennifer Robinson, who says the latest revelations should alarm American citizens, as well as journalists around the world. “This is the CIA talking about conspiracy to kidnap and murder an Australian citizen and an award-winning journalist and editor who has done nothing but publish truthful information.”

Embassy insider exposes CNN lies about Julian Assange
A “bombshell” CNN report claimed to show how Wikileaks founder Julian Assange published stolen Democratic Party emails in 2016 in cooperation with the Russian government from his place of refuge in Ecuador's London embassy. Ecuadorian diplomat Fidel Narváez — who served in the embassy throughout Assange's stay — says that CNN's report was error-ridden and defamatory.
“There are so many smears, speculations, and some false information in that report that somewhat somebody needs to set the record straight,” Narváez says. “It is unbelievable how they twist every single thing in order to defame Julian and Ecuador.”
Guest: Fidel Narváez, former Ecuadorian diplomat who served in Ecuador's London embassy for six of the seven years that Julian Assange lived there under asylum.
Read Fidel Narváez's article at The Grayzone : “ 40 rebuttals to the media's smears of Julian Assange – by someone who was actually there .”
Read CNN's [error-ridden] report : “ Exclusive: Security reports reveal how Assange turned an embassy into a command post for election meddling .”

CIA Whistleblower Jeffrey Sterling on Julian Assange and the Espionage Act
CIA whistleblower Jeffrey Sterling was convicted in "a travesty of a trial" for violating the Espionage Act. He says Julian Assange cannot hope to have a fair hearing in the U.S. criminal justice system if he is prosecuted under the same law for publishing classified documents that exposed war crimes.
Sterling was among the witnesses who spoke in Assange's defense at the Belmarsh Tribunal in Washington on January 20, 2023. The event is named after the Belmarsh prison in London, where Assange has languished for years while fighting extradition to the U.S.

WikiLeaks Julian Assange's Last Interview Before His Arrest in London (2018)
On 20th September 2018, World Ethical Data Forum broadcast an interview with Julian Assange, the founder and former Editor-in-Chief of WikiLeaks.
This interview was the first time Julian Assange had been heard from after his communication channels were cut off by the Ecuadorian embassy in March, 2018. The interview proved also to be the very last time he was heard from, as on 11th April 2019, Assange was carried out from the embassy by UK police and taken to Belmarsh Prison on the charge of having breached his bail conditions. He has since spent most of his time in solitary confinement and is currently awaiting an extradition hearing at Woolwich Crown Court on February 24th, 2020.
An hour long, this last interview is of interest historically, as well as in its own right, covering subjects such as the conditions of his detainment, his reasons for beginning WikiLeaks and his treatment at the hands of the press, the consequences for culture should WikiLeaks disappear, the meaning and importance of cryptography, the recent advances in AI hacking, cyber-warfare and surveillance technologies, and very much more.
World Ethical Data Forum broadcast the interview via RT and Ruptly as it was shown to the forum attendees, resulting in a media frenzy that resulted in over 2.4 million views across YouTube in just a few days.

The Assange Story (RT Documentary 2020)
The Full Julian Assange Story. WikiLeaks Founder’s Journey from Whistle-Blowing Hero to Exile.
Julian Assange has spent over a decade in the spotlight, pursued and loathed by the US government for revealing its darkest secrets.
Through his brainchild, WikiLeaks, Assange has published millions of leaked classified documents and correspondence on America's wars, politicians, military and corporations.
Months after his dramatic removal from Ecuador's London embassy, Assange is set to begin his battle for freedom by contesting the attempt to extradite him.
Washington wants to prosecute Assange under the Espionage Act, one of its most draconian laws.
If extradited and convicted, the transparency advocate could face up to 175 years in a US prison.
Assange's anti-secrecy activities have recently been under the microscope, and his allegedly quirky personality became the subject of relentless media scrutiny.
Assange is a divisive figure: a free-speech champion to some and a dangerous maverick to others.
However, little is known about Assange's personal life.
For a broader perspective on Julian Assange, his inner thoughts and motivation, RTD correspondent Konstantin Rozhkov travelled the globe to meet his closest friends, father and former colleagues.
John Shipton, his father, offers his take on Julian's formative years as a programming prodigy in Australia. British journalist, Vaughan Smith talks about hosting the WikiLeaks headquarters at his country mansion.
A one-time Ecuadorian consul in London, Fidel Narvaez recalls the time he spent inside the embassy with the WikiLeaks founder and staffers.
The filmmaker, Johannes Wahlstrom, talks about working with Assange on the Cablegate files.
The Assange Story pieces together their accounts for an intimate portrait of the man behind the world's biggest anti-secrecy organization.

The Belmarsh Tribunal, Sydney — Free Assange (March 2023)
The Belmarsh Tribunal, Sydney — Free Assange (March 2023)
Video by: Progressive International
On 4 March 2023, Australia hosts the fifth sitting of the Belmarsh Tribunal.
Julian Assange, the Australian publisher who founded WikiLeaks, faces 175 years in prison if extradited from the Belmarsh Prison where he is currently held in the United Kingdom. Assange’s case is the first time in history that a publisher has been indicted under the US Espionage Act.
Inspired by the Russell-Sartre Tribunals of the Vietnam War, the Belmarsh Tribunal brings together a range of expert witnesses — from lawyers to journalists to parliamentarians, union officials, whistleblowers and human rights defenders — to present evidence of this attack on publishers, to seek justice for the crimes they expose, and to demand the Biden Administration cease this prosecution.
Since its launch in 2020, the Progressive International has hosted four Belmarsh Tribunals, convening parliamentarians and public figures in a virtual tribunal (2020), at Church House at Westminster (2021), in New York City (2022) and in Washington DC (2023). We have taken expert testimony from members such as Brasilian President Lula da Silva, whistleblower Edward Snowden, and Guantánamo Bay detainee Mohamedou Ould Slahi.
The Sydney chapter of the Tribunal will add a uniquely Australian voice to the global demand to free Julian Assange. On the eve of the twentieth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and the forthcoming visit of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to the United States, there has never been a more important time to raise our voice in union. Julian Assange has spent nearly four years in the UK’s highest security prison. Now he must be freed.

ISEA2013, Sydney - Julian Assange Keynote Address
Julian Assange presented a Special Keynote speech at the 19th International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA2013), presented by the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) at the University of Sydney on Thursday 13 June 2013.
The Wikileaks founder addressed conference delegates and a small public audience via live video link from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.
Julian Assange has a unique insight into the futility, or otherwise, of resisting the incursion of the digital into every aspect of our lives.
