Russia-Ukraine conflict: Putin says Kyiv "refuses" to negotiate as African leaders call for peace
Calls for Russia to establish peace with Ukraine were made on Thursday by multiple African leaders, during the 2023 Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed he’s “ready” to talk with Kyiv officials, but that they “refuse.”
“It is our hope that constructive engagement and negotiation can bring about an end to the ongoing conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine,” South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on the matter.
“We agree with you that all problems should be resolved through talks,” Putin responded. “But the problem is that they (Ukraine) refuse to talk to us.”
“They have stated this as their official position. The Ukrainian president signed a decree on this subject. A decree that prohibits any talks (with Russia),” he added.
Additionally, Putin, 70, claimed Russia is “not shying away from reviewing” African leaders’ peace proposal between the neighboring European nations — which have been at war again since February 2022.

Israel judicial overhaul: Netanyahu calls decision to trim Supreme Court’s powers “minor correction”
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday called a planned judicial overhaul “a minor correction” and said the decision to limit the Supreme Court’s powers to overrule government actions would not hurt Israel’s democracy.
“It’s a minor correction. It’s described as the end of Israeli democracy. I think that’s silly and when the dust settles, everybody will see that,” he said.
Netanyahu made the comments during an interview with ABC News on Thursday.
Netanyahu claimed that many opposition leaders had initially supported the reform but changed their stance for “political reasons.”
He said he understands the concerns of Israelis and had paused the reforms to work with opposition leaders on a compromise but had decided to move forward with the plan when he didn’t “get anything from the opposition.”

Earthquake destroys road connecting Turkey and Syria, drone video shows - global news by starmoon
Following Monday's 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which killed hundreds of people in both Turkey and Syria, drone footage of the main route connecting the two nations' cities of Hatay and Aleppo revealed enormous fissures in the road.
The devastating earthquake caused injuries, destroyed numerous homes, and toppled thousands of structures, including hospitals, schools, and apartment buildings.
Rescuers were hindered from getting to some of the worst-affected places, such as Kahramanmaraş, when the death toll surpassed 11,000 people, by damaged roads, bad weather, and a shortage of heavy equipment.

Turkey earthquake: Erdogan declares 3-month state of emergency as rescue efforts continue - STARMOON
To aid rescue efforts, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday proclaimed a three-month state of emergency for the country's 10 southern regions that had recently experienced deadly earthquakes.
The action was taken as rescue workers raced against time to extricate people from the wreckage of fallen buildings. The death toll from Monday's two powerful earthquakes, which struck a large region of Turkey and Syria, approached 5,000. When a state of emergency is declared, the president and cabinet have the authority to establish new laws without the legislature's consent and to restrict or suspend rights and freedoms as they see fit.
In his second speech, since the first earthquake struck, Erdogan declared, "We have decided to proclaim a state of emergency to guarantee that activities are carried out quickly. Erdogan said that 70 nations had offered assistance with search and rescue efforts and that Turkey intended to open hotels in the nearby tourist destination of Antalya so that anyone affected by the earthquakes may stay there over the winter.
The snow-covered city of Malatya's earthquake victims described their grievances after saying the government abandoned them. Says Ahmet Alinak "We are all doomed because no one is present. We reside in Turkey, thus this is the order that applies to us. We didn't anticipate the state to act in this manner."

Drone video shows scale of devastation in Turkey, Syria following deadly earthquake - starmoon
A day after devastating earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria, drone footage flew over cities with collapsed buildings and where rescue efforts were underway as the death toll passed 5,000.
Areas in Turkey and Syria devastated by earthquakes may need years to recover from the destruction, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said on Tuesday.
Hatay, which borders northwest Syria, is the worst-hit province in Turkey with at least 872 people killed during the earthquake. In Hatay alone, more than 1,200 buildings have been destroyed.

In the market for a used car? Here’s what’s behind Canada’s cooling market
According to some analysts, the used vehicle market is finally beginning to drop off while the price of new automobiles in Canada is still on the rise.
People opted for used automobiles as a result of difficulties the new car industry suffered during the COVID-19 epidemic, such as delivery delays. However, as certain epidemic impediments begin to fade, used automobile demand is starting to normalize, which is causing prices to decline.
However, because of slower demand and higher financing costs due to interest rates, buying a new car has become more expensive. reports Vanessa Wright.

Ontario dairy farmer sparks controversy with video showing raw milk being poured down the drain
After uploading a TikTok video showing him pouring what he claimed to be 30,000 liters of raw milk down the drain, an Ontario dairy farmer caused a stir on social media.
He said that because he had already met his quota, he couldn't sell the milk. Farmers are being urged to dump because, under Canada's managed supply system, there is no longer any incentive to continue producing after reaching your allotment. Even though the amount being dumped may be viewed as a drop in the bucket overall—experts estimate that dairy farmers across the nation discard between 100 million and 300 million liters of milk annually—it still raises concerns about the system at a time when many families are struggling to make ends meet.

Biden says US military shot down suspected Chinese spy balloon - global news by STARMOON
U.S. President Joe Biden told reporters on Saturday afternoon that he had given the order to officials to shoot down the suspected Chinese spy balloon earlier this week and that the military successfully "took it down" earlier in the day.
He said that national security leaders had decided the best time for the operation was when it got over water, where fighter jets shot it down off the Carolina coast after it had traveled over sensitive military sites across North America.
According to Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin in a statement, the military had determined that taking it down over land would pose an undue risk to people on the ground due to the size and weight of the balloon.
