What Made TikTok So Rich
💠 The rise of TikTok can be attributed to the lessons learned from Vine's failure. Vine, a short-video app, failed to retain its top creators due to a lack of payment mechanism. TikTok, on the other hand, emphasizes creators and provides them with a reliable method of payment. TikTok also commercialized videos with ads and developed an integrated marketplace for creators and brands. Additionally, sponsored brand challenges are used to generate revenue. TikTok's early emphasis on creators, robust algorithms, lucky timing, wise management, a well-defined strategy, and other factors contributed to its enormous success. TikTok's popularity led to other social media platforms creating similar services, but TikTok remained dominant due to its well-established creative economy and revenue-generating strategies. Byte-dance, the company behind TikTok, has several revenue-generating strategies up its sleeve, including tipping through live streams and a function that allows users to pay to increase a post's visibility to a specific audience.

The Mind-Blowing Science Behind How This Jellyfish Can Turn Back Time
💠 Scientists discovered a distinct species of jellyfish, Turritopsis dohrnii, which can reverse the aging process and return to its youthful state by converting mature cells into new cells through cellular transdifferentiation. The discovery was unintentional and groundbreaking, as the jellyfish was initially mistaken for another species, and it was observed in a lab setting rather than in the wild. This process allows the jellyfish to bypass death by reverting to a polyp form and beginning the cycle anew. The findings challenge the conventional wisdom on aging, and researchers are exploring the implications of this discovery for understanding the aging process in animals and its potential applications for human health.

The Digital Dollar: The Future of Money is Here and It's Happening Now
💠 The Federal Reserve has conducted a pilot program of the digital dollar, or CBDC, with the help of financial companies such as Wells Fargo, MasterCard, and HSBC. However, the implementation of a centralized, government-controlled digital currency could result in the loss of economic independence and personal freedom. The government may use social credit scores to restrict people's purchases of goods and services. With programmable money, the government can control how individuals spend their money, including limiting or prohibiting certain purchases. The current financial system is viewed as flawed by the government, as it lacks control over people's purchasing decisions. The digital dollar would enable the government to have sole control over the ledger and impose limitations or requirements on what individuals can do with their money. This type of currency is being adopted globally, and the World Economic Forum has encouraged governments worldwide to create digital currencies and digital IDs to combat hate speech and extremism on social media.

Forget About Nuclear Fusion - Thorium is the Energy Source of the Future
💠 Thorium is a heavy element that can be used in fission reactors to produce energy. Advanced thorium-fueled reactors are believed to be able to extract 40 to 50 times more energy than conventional uranium-fueled reactors, making them potentially much more fuel-efficient. It would also produce less nuclear waste and require much less mining. The US ran the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment from 1965 to 1969 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which showed that thorium could be utilized as a fuel. The experiment was largely successful, but it had several design flaws. The biggest problem was the structural integrity of the metal pipes used to transport the liquid fuel. Despite earlier difficulties, many businesses and government research have shown renewed interest in thorium as a potential energy source.

Asteroid Mining: Key to Sustaining Life on Earth?
💠 Mining an asteroid operates on straightforward principles: pick an asteroid, relocate it to a location where it can be processed easily, and then disassemble it to create valuable products. Mining on Earth cannot be replaced because of the cost - currently, asteroid mining faces precisely this issue. We need to locate the ideal asteroid and transport it there now that we have an electric asteroid-mining vehicle. Although electrical engines are not strong enough to fly into space once there they may travel extremely far with relatively little fuel. To put the asteroid in a stable orbit around Earth and so conserve more fuel, we can exploit the Moon's gravitational pull.
This is not science fiction in any way; we could begin constructing this future right now. We don't need novel physics or fancy materials to enable asteroid mining, just a little shove will do.

The Economics of Nuclear Power: A Closer Look
💠 Investment in renewable energy totaled $273 billion in 2018, bringing the total amount invested to $2.3 trillion. With nuclear power providing 61% of its electricity, France emits only 32 grams of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour. Germany, a nation that has spent billions on wind energy, is replacing all of its nuclear power facilities with natural gas plants. It makes obvious sense why others support nuclear energy over renewables. Building a nuclear power station with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts would cost $6 billion.
Building a natural gas-powered plant would cost only $920 per kilowatt. Each full block unit represents $5.6 million; blocks can be partially filled to represent smaller fractions. If they both run for an hour, they will each generate 1,000 megawatt hours of energy. Because the energy market is complex, it is not easy to calculate the revenue from this number. Nuclear power has one major advantage: its fuel is relatively inexpensive simply by virtue of needing much less of it than natural gas does. Before even talking about the safety concerns, nuclear energy just becomes a tremendously tough investment to justify over time, leading to an even larger run into the negative before income begins.

Unleashing the Power of Neutron Stars: The Ultimate Cosmic Force
💠 Neutron stars are some of the most extreme and violent phenomena in the universe. They are giant atomic nuclei, measuring only a few kilometers in diameter, yet possessing the mass of a star. Their existence is owed to the death of something majestic, as their core implodes into a ball of pure nuclear matter. When a star explodes, its mass is so great that all living humans would fit into just one cubic centimeter of neutron star matter. Neutron stars are enormous nuclei with millions of protons and neutrons, shaped like spaghetti and lasagna, known as "nuclear pasta".
Neutron stars could be responsible for the creation of some of the heavy elements in the universe, such as gold, uranium and platinum. Others believe that quarks may turn into strange quarks, creating strange matter with extreme properties. The magnetic fields of neutron stars, when first formed, spin very rapidly, creating pulses due to the emission of beams of radio waves.

Nuclear fusion ignition is being heralded as the Holy Grail of energy
💠 Fusion is a nuclear reaction in which two atoms fuse to form one or more new atoms with a slightly lower total mass. Ignition happens when a fusion reaction makes more energy than it takes in from outside sources. 192 lasers were directed at a 0.04-inch (1-mm) pellet of fuel made of deuterium and tritium. Fusion energy has been the "holy grail" of energy production for nearly half a century. This discovery shows that fusion ignition is possible, but it will take a lot of work to improve efficiency.
The National Ignition Facility fired a fuel pellet with two million joules of laser energy - about the amount of power needed to run a hair dryer for 15 minutes. The National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is the world's first commercial-scale fusion power plant. Its output of two million joules is 50 times that of the next most powerful laser on the planet. The efficiency of the system could be greatly improved by using more powerful lasers and making them in ways that use less energy.

The History of AI: From Beginnings to Breakthroughs
💠 The first digital computers didn't come out until about 80 years ago. In the 1990s, punch cards were the primary form of computer storage. AI systems' language and image recognition abilities are now comparable to those of humans. Some AI implementations are so advanced that they can be found on smart phones, but others are still in development.
This graph shows the evolution of artificial intelligence's perceptual powers over the last nine years. Artificial intelligence is no longer a technology of the future; AI is here, and much of what is currently reality would have appeared sci-fi only a few years ago. The vast range of uses demonstrates that this is a fairly general technology that individuals can employ for some incredibly good—and some quite bad—goals. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems have become more powerful as the amount of training data has grown. PaLM's training computation was more than 5 million times greater than AlexNet, the AI with the biggest training computation just ten years ago.
Researchers examine long-term trends to determine what is conceivable in the future. An artificial intelligence system could be powerful enough to bring the globe into a "qualitatively different future" It could cause a change as big as the agricultural and industrial revolutions. We are still in the early stages of this history, and much of what will become feasible is still ahead of us.

When Will the First Baby Be Born in Space?
💠 Private space enterprises are establishing a new economy worth $300 billion each year. China will soon be the dominant space power if current trends continue. The voyage to Mars is nearly 1,000 times longer for a spaceship than the trip to the moon; hence, the moon will be humanity's first home away from home. China and Russia plan to construct a long-term facility at the moon's south pole between 2036 and 2045. NASA is collaborating with SpaceX on this and future lunar projects.
Living on the moon or Mars will be difficult and stressful, so first occupants will most likely only stay for a few years. A Dutch company plans to transport a very pregnant woman 250 miles up just long enough to give birth. Orbital Assembly Corporation plans to open a luxury hotel in space in 2027. NASA is exploring permitting a reality television show to send a citizen to the International Space Station.

Billions of Super-Earths Waiting to be Discovered
💠 NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite has found two exoplanets that orbit stars outside of our solar system. One is 30% the size of Earth and orbits its star in under three days. The other is 70% larger than Earth and may have a deep ocean. Super-Earths are the most common type of exoplanet in the Milky Way. Astrobiologists have compiled a list of characteristics that make a planet ideal for life.
The most habitable planet would be nearly twice the mass of Earth and 20 to 30 percent larger in volume. Super-Earths, by definition, exhibit many of the characteristics of a super-livable planet. Astronomers know that the building blocks for life exist elsewhere, but "livable" does not imply "inhabited". Until scientists discover proof of life elsewhere, it's plausible that life on Earth was a one-of-a-kind accident. The next generation of big ground-based telescopes will have the best chance of finding signs of life in the atmospheres of exoplanets.

Black Holes are Time Machines
💠 Black holes are natural time machines that allow travel to both the past and the future. According to Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, matter and energy have an unusual effect on the cosmos. Black holes' event horizons are of interest not only to scientists but also to hobbyists and space enthusiasts. A black hole bends time so severely that it can reverse itself. If you reach close enough to the black hole's core, your time will slow down.
But you should still be able to escape if you don't cross the event horizon. The Catch is that you'd have to travel faster than the speed of light.
