BPD Relationship Makeup and Suggestions for Success
BPD Relationship Makeup and Suggestions for Success

In this video, I'm going to examine the "BPD and Relationship of 3", which entails what makes up your relationships, what detracts from their success, and how you can manage and control those BPD symptoms that interfere with your relationships.

Embracing a positive outlook and managing your mental illness often feels like an insurmountable mountain that everyone with BPD, and other types of mental illness, has to contend with. I understand the fear of doing things differently. The anxiety and sadness about the world not being the place you expect it to be. Know that your BPD uses this against you. It uses your Complex BPD beliefs, behaviors, and patterns to keep you locked in place with a hazy outlook for a different future, and this haziness keeps your BPD strengthened and in control.
The overconfidence in the negative is like an old blanket wrapped around you, perhaps by someone you thought loved you, someone you wanted to love, or perhaps you put on yourself. I understand that there is loneliness under the blanket at the base of this mountain. Know that you’re not alone in your effort and challenge. Others stand at the base of this mountain of change and feel they can’t do it. This is a big part of what keeps your BPD in place. Whether that blanket is the voice is mom, dad, brother, sister, cousin, friend, lover, or yourself you have to push it aside and take that first step up that mountain.
Push back by challenging the negative. When you sense the negative creeping in, like a secret spider on your soul or a snake around your neck, capture that thought and challenge it with positive and kind pushbacks. You’re BPD tells you can’t and don’t deserve love, push back by recognizing the love, compassion, and big heart you have to give to a worthy other. Your BPD tells you you’re worthless, push back by recognizing the skills you have, how you help others, or go out and perform random acts of kindness.

You know when you feel false, like a fake and everyone knows it? Like you’re just incompetent and don’t deserve to be at your job, in your relationship, or with those other successful people? This is a common feeling called the imposter syndrome, and everyone gets it. It’s a little different from those with BPD, and tends to be more intense. BPD uses these moments to eat away at your sense of self, your power to resist it, and at the authenticity of your true ability to impact your life and the situations you’re in. In this video we're going to discuss the imposter syndrome, BPD, and what you can do about it.
The imposter syndrome causes you to feels that your identity you’ve created for yourself and present to others is false and unattainable, and everyone knows it (show face of fear). Everyone feels it, from billionaires to you and me. The feeling and intensity can be quite intense for those with BPD, however.
We know that individuals with BPD have identity problems related to fuzzy self-concept and feelings of imposterism that are related to facets of perfectionistic self-presentation (not making any mistake, ever!) along with the tendency to engage in splitting with self-images, like “I must be perfect or I’m fake and false and everyone knows it”.
Identity, self-worth, and connection are among the core struggles for many perfectionistic and individuals with BPD. You’re not alone in this struggle. Know that others deal with imposter syndrome, perfectionistic expectations, and splitting but with hard work and the tools to get there, you can beat this.

Managing a BPD episode is not easy. In this video I provide you steps to help someone when they're in the midst of a BPD episode. I hope you find it helpful.
The 7 steps include:
1. You’re relying on your relationship
2. Get that person to focus on you in the present
3. Ask them to breathe with you
4. Reassure them that it’s going to be ok, that you’re there to help.
5. Once breathing has calmed, ask them to explain the triggering incident.
6. Problem solve trigger only.
7. Describe how you’re going to help them.

Dealing with BPD is a challenge all its own but when we add the complexity of perceptual biases the end result can be even more disheartening and severe. In this video we’re going to discuss a perceptual bias called the availability heuristic. This is a bias based on information you gather in the world around you paired with easy recall of similar information that causes to reach a false conclusion that you believe is 100% accurate and true. We’re going to break this down to help you challenge it to lessen its adverse impact on your perception and how it affects you BPD.

This trial, reportedly focuses on defamation and domestic abuse that has brought histrionic and borderline personality disorder into the spotlight, again. Let’s talk about it and what it means and what you can do to insulate yourself.
Let’s breakdown what these two disorders are:
BPD is a constellation of traits and behaviors that include
• unstable relationships
• idealization and devaluation of others – and the self
• fear of abandonment and rejection
• feelings of emptiness
• suicidal gestures and threats are often present
• inappropriate anger responses
• uncertainty about who you are and what you want to achieve
• engagement in self-damaging behaviors – could be drug abuse, spending, etc.,
• a tendency for stress-related paranoia and/or dissociative experiences.
• All of these factors adversely impact your relationships and work life.
HPD is a different, but similar, PD. This collection of traits include
• the need to be the center of attention
• interactions are often overly sexualized or provocative to gain attention
• changing emotions and what are called shallow expressions of emotions – they seem very superficial and fake, though they may not be
• physical presentation is often used to garner attention from others
• speech is often laced with attention getting phrases or words – curse words, sexual terms, or flirtatious speech
• tends to be dramatic and overly expressive in presentation with goal of getting attention
• easily influenced and suggestible – particularly by those the individual finds attractive or of high value
• relationships are often seen as more intimate and important than they actually are.
• All of these traits add to the adverse impact of your relationships and work life.
This issue and trial brings BPD and HPD into the limelight as I mentioned, but how does this impact you? Well, you’ll start to see an increase in BPD and HPD diagnoses.
Human beings are influence by the availability heuristic. The availability heuristic operates on the belief that if something can be recalled, it must be important and valid, or at least more important than other solutions which are not as readily recalled.
This is why data is so important, and testing is critical. Remember, not everyone with BPD and/or HPD are in abusive relationships, that all disorders are on a continuum/spectrum, and that treatment is possible. The media and telephone game wants you to believe the worst so you’ll tune in, read the article etc. This can be dangerous.
This is why using good judgment and assess yourself outside of this attention, headline-grabbing trial, is important. Some of this may be triggering, but it’s important to separate yourself. Unstable self-image may be causing you to be hyper focused on this trial and Amber’s experience or Johnny’s. Remember, you’re a separate entity, and you choose your path. You can make good choices to go forward and help yourself and that’s what this channel is all about.

Self-contempt causes you to feel alone and conflicted. It also encourages a negative feedback loop that keeps you stuck in place, feeling trapped. When you're in this spiral, you're likely to self-attack and split on your perceptions of self, others, and your world. You can beat self-contempt and in this video I'm going to provide you suggestions on just how to do that.

BPD Creep happens without you even knowing it. You didn’t suspect it and at first you cannot identify the trigger or how your emotional button got pressed, but you react and fall into that old maladaptive pattern that concludes in hurt and relationship disruption.
Many individuals with BPD grew up in chaotic environments, and this chaos actually gave you a sense of comfort. You learned comfort is chaos., because if everything is in upheaval, then you don’t have to be surprised by the upheaval. Due to this, when all is quiet and you start to relax you get triggered and emotional buttons get pressed and you’re pulled out of the calm, and into the psychological chaos.

When you saw the topic you probably thought I was going to talk about only interpersonal relationships, the relationship between you and someone else, but I’m not, I’m also going to talk about intrapersonal relationships, the relationship you have with yourself. I think you’ll be surprised how similar in pain and process these two aspects really are.
Relationships can often feel like a double-edged sword. You want to be close and open but you’re afraid to so you push the emotions and/or the other person away, but when they start to dissolve or step back your rejection sensitivity gets activated, followed by fear and frustration which causes you to engage in those maladaptive beliefs, behaviors, and patterns that help keep your BPD symptomatology in place.
A toxic relationship is one that makes you feel unsupported, misunderstood, demeaned, or attacked. Essentially, it’s any relationship that makes you feel worse rather than better. I’m going to talk about the 10 common factors that make up toxic internal and external relationships.
1. Lack of support
2. Toxic communication
3. Resentment
4. Dishonesty
5. Patterns of disrespect
6. Feel unsafe and don’t trust yourself or the other person.
7. You feel neglected or exploited by your own actions that encourage your self-perspective of low value and the other person treats you and support this negative aspect of yourself.
8. You feel lost, don’t know who you are
9. Feel belittled and ashamed
10. Judgment instead of open-mindedness
Some of these may have been hard to hear, acknowledge, and write down but this is important for your growth. Did you end up with more for the ME column or the other column, or both? Knowing if it’s a toxic interpersonal or intrapersonal relationship or not can help you to determine if changes need to be made to the relationship or if it’s time to end the relationship with the other and really get into strengthening that relationship you have with yourself and detoxify it.

Attachment is a critical component to successful BPD treatment. In this video we’re going to explore Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and BPD. The presence and overlap of BPD and RAD symptoms make sense based upon common history of those with BPD and how these individuals learn to approach others in relationships. In this video, we do a deep dive into BPD and RAD and what you can do about it to help gain insight into your attachment to others.
Reactive attachment disorder is consider a trauma and stress related disorder.
It is often identified and seen in infancy or early childhood and is characterized by a pattern of noticeably distressed and developmentally inappropriate attachment behaviors, in which the child rarely or minimally turns to an attachment figure for comfort, support, protection, and nurturance.
The essential feature of RAD is absent or poorly developed attachment between the child and supposed caregiving adults. However, Children with RAD are believed to have the capacity to form selective attachments, but due to limited opportunities during early development, they fail to learn and show the behavioral manifestations of selective attachments.
An important note is that a diagnosis of RAD should not be made in children who are developmentally unable to form selective attachments, such as those along the ASD spectrum.
What about in adults? Well, attachment in childhood can change over time based upon experiences and personal growth, but it can also stay the same, particularly if left unaddressed or neglected. We know that those with BPD are at a heightened probability to have attachment issues, and fall into either preoccupied, avoidant, or dismissing attachment styles.
This is one reason why treatment takes so long and is often a push-pull type relationship between client and therapist. For example, getting close with your therapist, feeling fear of rejection or abandonment, pulling back but wanting to be close, so you distance yourself, then agitated because your distant then want to be close but still afraid.
Attachment is scary for those with BPD, and understandably so. The individual with BPD hopefully has a relationship with a therapist that is consistent, caring, and has their best interest in mind. It can be hard to have this and see it clearly when aspects of RAD are present.
For those with RAD and/or BPD, treatment challenges typically arise also when unlearning maladaptive patterns that were developed to manage disorder symptoms like RAD. The maladaptive patterns can include missing sessions, becoming easily frightened, and intense fear of rejection or abandonment by your therapist.
You can change your attachment pattern and therapy is an ideal relationship in which to do it. I want to encourage you to be open and honest about your fears and thoughts with your therapist about these issues. Exploring them and shining a light on them will help you growth and develop a more secure attachment style.
