What is Unrestrained Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)?

Individuals with BPD tend to exhibit extreme levels of mood instability/emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, or the combination of the two that leads to having no, or a broken, filter.
For many individuals, the filter has either not developed or has been distorted or broken. Most individuals with BPD do not have malicious intent, in my experience, though I know many partners and family members feel that the maladaptive behaviors and words that come flying out are acidic and certainly burn. This is that missing or broken filter.
Unlike the narcissistic individual, those with BPD feel intense regret and self-hatred when the pain of their words and behaviors are explained to them. This often ignites core content and can send them spiraling, when the goal needs to be filter development or repair.
How do you develop or repair a filter?
First, slow down. The individual with BPD needs to build insight into their core content and when they feel activated/triggered they need to freeze – don’t fight or flight, freeze. Then look inward and assess your activation and think about how you would want someone to act and treat you. Then, engage in that manner without expectation of immediate reward.
Repairing or developing a filter is not easy. Most that are not along the BPD spectrum developed this as a little kids, but when it’s missing or damaged, it can take time to do it differently. Patience with yourself is critical, but not always easy.

In this video, I discuss the pain and consequence of being on the receiving end of a narcissistic who has no filter. Narcissistic impulsivity is typically focused on self-enhancing, aggressive, and short-sighted behavior. They don’t focus on the consequence because they don’t believe they have to. The no filter concept is typically displayed through verbal and behavioral expression. I think it, so I can say it; I want it, so I have every right to do it. Many times this is fueled by the lack of insight into how their behavior may be perceived or felt by others.
Having no filter can feel good and powerful for those along the narcissistic spectrum, adding to self-enhancing, aggressive, and short-sighted behavior, but it tends to create short-term benefits with long-term adverse consequences. However, due to lack of insight they often feel that they are the victim when shown how their words or behavior, and lack of filter, has caused the problem.
This can be exceptionally challenging when it’s a partner, a boss or a supervisor as they tend to say and do things that are destructive to the receiving individuals self-esteem and stress level.
The best way to deal with the narcissistic individual with a broken filter is to insulate yourself. You do this by defining your sense of self, recognizing that you control your value. I know this is scary when it’s your job or degree that’s on the line.

It is very common for people to confuse BPD with NPD, but they’re very different disorders in many ways, but they do have some aspects that overlap and are similar. In this video we’re going to examine this to help you identify what’s what.
BPD is a disorder that includes a pattern of instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, emotions, and marked impulsivity. NPD is a pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy. Let’s examine and break down the similarities, differences, and overlaps of BPD and NPD that tends to cause a lot of confusion when these traits are exhibited in individuals in your life.

Splitting is also called all-or-nothing-thinking, dichotomous thinking, and black-and-while thinking. The concept of splitting entails seeing something, someone, or even yourself as all good or all bad. It’s the hero or zero mentality. Splitting is a protective but maladaptive coping mechanism used to avoid rejection or being hurt by simplifying stressful situations, instances, consequences, or people. Splitting distorts reality by limiting your view to only seeing things through your anxiety, fear, anger, and other protective beliefs, thoughts, and feelings that initially spikes up then drop you into a depressive state. Splitting causes you to think that all mistakes are intentional and are directed to cause you pain, but what if they’re not? What if all behavior has a probability of success and failure on a continuum? This is the shade of grey, where options exist.

In this video, we’re going to focus on attention-seeking behaviors, but also the paradox that a disorder that seeks and benefits from appropriate attention, shouldn’t get it, which will somehow teach them to not engage in attention-seeking maladaptive behaviors. Let's break the myth and explore attention-seeking behaviors in those with BPD.
Maladaptive attention-seeking behaviors can include:
1. Saying provocative or rude things to elicit a reaction, even a negative or hostile one.
2. Purposely annoying others starting fights.
3. Exhibiting learned helplessness, which is saying they cannot carry out a task to change a negative situation but they have the ability to do so.
4. Often posting one’s troubles on social media and embellishing the severity.
5. Self-harming threats, gestures, or behaviors
6. Being inappropriately flirtatious or engaging in inappropriate sexual displays.
Many, including some mental health providers, hold the view that starving the individual with BPD of attention will “teach” them to not engage in behaviors to get attention. This just doesn’t make sense, and it doesn’t work. All human beings need some form and degree of attention, when starved, individuals act out – BPD or not. This is not to say that all attention-seeking behaviors should be attended to, but if you know someone with BPD who engages in attention-seeking behaviors, ostracizing them is not going to help the issue, it will inflame it.
Many individuals with BPD grew up in attention neglectful environments, whether this was by family, friends, or other types of environments. This cold shoulder tactic is not going to teach the person with BPD a lesson, but justify their core content, inner critic, and will encourage maladaptive beliefs, behaviors, and patterns. You have to engage in an adaptive and suitable manner, which can sometimes be very difficult.

Most individuals along narcissistic spectrum have very rich and detailed fantasies that include grandiose images of themselves and idealized others.
Specific fantasies often include the narcissistic individual experiencing more acceptance of their fantasy, more positive reactions in their fantasies, and fewer fantasies that take place in the present. The imaginings of tomorrow are more promising for the narcissist than what’s happening today.
Breakdown into two fantasy types:
1. Omnipotent fantasies
2. Passive fantasies
The purpose of these fantasies is to regulate their self-esteem. Narcissistic would example. In particular, individuals along narcissistic spectrum tend to see themselves as experiencing higher levels of daily stress tend to experience
1. power and revenge fantasies
2. self-admiration fantasies
It has also been found that individuals along narcissistic spectrum also have fantasies in which they’re the victims of deprivation and pain (more of a covert narcissistic style fantasy).
Treatment to address these issues would include reality-based treatment in conjunction with stress management techniques. Insight will be most challenging, and keeping the individual in treatment long enough to benefit from the treatment.
