9 Things You Didn’t Know About the Great Pyrenees.
Today I will talk about 9 Things You Didn’t Know About the Great Pyrenees.
The Great Pyrenees is a big dog with an equally big heart.
Pyrs have been serving as guardians for their flocks for thousands of years.
Here are some interesting facts about the Great Pyrenees:
1. They Were Bred to Be Guard Dogs.
The Great Pyrenees was bred to be a livestock guard dog for the farmers in the Pyrenees Mountains of Europe which form the border between France and Spain.
These farmers bred the Great Pyrenees and the smaller Pyrenean Shepherds; the latter was in charge of herding, while the former was in charge of protecting the flock from predators like wolves and bears.
2. The Breed Is So Old, They’ve Been Fossilized.
The Great Pyrenees likely arrived in the Pyrenean Mountains with their shepherds around the year 3,000 Before Christ.
Fossils of the Great Pyrenees have been found in the region and dated to between 1800 Before Christ and 1000 Before Christ.
Experts think the breed probably evolved from white mountain dogs that originated in Asia Minor as many as 11,000 years ago.
3. They Are Instinctively Nurturing.
The Great Pyrenees is not just a guard dog.
He is a guardian.
The Great Pyrenees protects the members of the flock, and he also cares for and nurtures them.
His instinct is to be kind to and patient with all vulnerable animals.
4. They Are Nocturnal by Nature.
The Great Pyrenees was bred to guard the flocks at night while the shepherds were sleeping and predators roamed about.
Because of this, he is naturally nocturnal.
People who keep Pyrs as pets shouldn’t be surprised to find they often bark at night.
This makes them a great deterrent for burglars.
5. They Became Royalty in France.
For thousands of years, the Great Pyrenees was the dog of peasant livestock farmers.
But he gained popularity with the French royals and nobility in the Renaissance years.
According to French writings from 1407, the “Great Dogs of the Mountains” served as guardians for the Chateau fort de Lordes, a castle in southwestern France.
In 1675, King Louis XIV’s royal court declared the Great Pyrenees the Royal Dog of France.
6. Queen Victoria Owned One.
Pyrs were not just coveted by the French nobility.
Queen Victoria of England owned one in the mid-19th century.
Queen Victoria was a dog lover and owned many different breeds throughout her life.
7. The Marquis de Lafayette Brought Them to the United States
The Marquis de Lafayette, a French military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War and was close with George Washington,
brought the first Great Pyrenees to the United States in 1824.
Lafayette gave a pair of Pyrs to his friend, J.S. Skinner, who later wrote a book called “The Dog and the Sportsman.”
8. They Helped Revive Saint Bernard.
In 1870, Pyrenean blood was used with that of other large breeds to help bring back Saint Bernard after that noble dog’s numbers had been so greatly depleted by avalanches and distemper at the hospice in Switzerland.
9. They Were Used to Haul Artillery in WWII.
Standing guard isn’t the only job that this breed has had. During World War II,
the Great Pyrenees was used to bring supplies of artillery over the Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France.
So, now you know a little more about Great Pyrenees.

12 Unique Dog Breeds That Come From China.
Dogs have been a part of Chinese culture for more than 7,000 years.
Dogs have been woven into cultural stories, found in artworks, and skeletal remains from Chinese archaeological digs.
They have been used as guardians, hauling, herding, hunting, and regal companions from the time they were domesticated.
The breeds span all types and sizes, from fluffy lapdogs like the shih tzu to wrinkly-faced guard dogs like the well-known shar-pei and rarely mentioned Kunming wolfdog.
Breed Characteristics.
The breeds span all different body types and sizes and are as unique as the varied regions of China, from the colder mountain zone to the tropical, coastal areas.
It is believed that the emperors and nobles greatly appreciated the flat-faced look; hence many—although not all—have shorter snouts and folds in their faces.
Flattened faces gave the dogs almost a "lion dog" appearance, an important symbol of protection in Chinese lore.
Another unique quality—the shar-pei, chow chow, and Chongqing dogs have blue-black tongues—a rare quality in dogs.
Most Chinese dogs are in the toy to the medium-sized range; a few breeds go up to 80 pounds but not more than that.
These 12 unique dog breeds hail from all parts of China.
#1. Pugs.
Pugs are one of the most popular family dog breeds due to their sweet, friendly demeanor and manageable size.
They're also one of the world's oldest breeds.
The pug likely originated in China around 400 Before Christ. as a Tibetan Buddhist monk companion.
Hypotheses swirl tying pugs to Tibetan mastiffs while others claim it's related to the Pekingese, another Chinese dog hailing from China.
Formerly a mischievous companion of emperors, this comical, loving pup warms hearts everywhere it goes.
#2. Pekingese.
Also called "Pekes," "lion dogs," or "sun dogs," Pekingese were initially kept as companion pets to Chinese royalty and were ingrained in Chinese folklore.
One story says that Pekingese were created when Buddha shrunk a lion down to the size of a small dog.
In reality, Pekingese were most likely the result of breeding a larger dog with toy-sized dogs in China.
They were a favorite—and much looked-after—pet among Chinese royalty for thousands of years.
#3. Shih Tzus.
The shih tzu, a small toy dog with a playful personality, is named for its lion-like appearance.
Its name comes from the word "lion" in Chinese.
Like the Pekingese and pugs, Shih Tzus were treasured by Chinese nobility for centuries and were considered the noble dog of China.
The shih tzu can be traced back to ancient dog breeds but is more closely related to wolves than other dog breeds.
#4. Shar-Peis.
Known for their distinctive, wrinkled faces, petite ears, and blue-black tongues, shar-peis are a unique and rare breed with roots in ancient China.
Shar-peis, meaning "sand skin," were initially bred as hunting and guard dogs 2,000 years ago in southern China.
Sadly, during China's communist revolution in the mid-1900s, shar-pei populations were decimated, almost making the breed extinct.
Sometime during the 1970s, a Chinese shar-pei enthusiast rallied American breeders to propagate the breed,
and numbers rose once again.
#5. Chow Chow.
Chow chows are among the most ancient Chinese dog breeds, with evidence dating back to 206 Befor Christ.
They were originally employed as hunting and guard dogs.
Like the shar-pei, chows have a very distinctive appearance:
Their faces are somewhat bear-like with deep facial folds and a blue-black tongue.
#6. Chinese Crested.
Because the Chinese crested has extremely early origins, no one is exactly sure when or how the breed was developed.

Things You Probably Didn’t Know About The Smiling Samoyed.
Today I will talk about 10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About The Smiling Samoyed.
Samoyeds are among the world’s most ancient breeds, with a history stretching back more than 5,000 years.
As the last Ice Age disappeared, wild reindeer became the key source of food for people living across northern Eurasia.
One group, known as the Nenets or Samoyeds, survived by herding and breeding domestic reindeer on the Russian tundra.
Their working partners were beautiful white multi-purpose dogs, who were named for the people they served for centuries.
Here are 10 things you probably didn't know about Samoyeds:
1. The Samoyed is one of the 14 ancient breeds most genetically similar to the wolf and has not been dramatically changed by human selective breeding.
Exceptionally social, intelligent, loyal, and vocal, Samoyeds possess the famous Samoyed smile, seen by the upward curling lips even with the mouth closed!
2. The breed is also known for its magnificent double coat of white, cream, or biscuit.
The breed standard notes that the coat should “glisten with a silver sheen.”
3. Samoyeds “blow” or shed the undercoat twice a year.
There is no such thing as a 100 percent hypoallergenic dog breed and most of those breeds considered best for allergy sufferers are non-shedding breeds.
People with allergies interested in acquiring a Samoyed would do well to expose themselves to Samoyeds before deciding to purchase one.
They do indeed shed.
4. There's another unusual feature about the coat.
Even experienced Samoyed owners are continually amazed at how their muddy, filthy dogs clean up relatively easily once the mud is rinsed off and the dogs are dried.
Samoyeds with proper stand-off coats are said to be “Teflon” dogs because the dirt doesn't stick.
A forced air driver works wonders in blowing out dirt and dust from Samoyed coats.
5. Samoyeds are very smart, get bored easily, and thrive when given tasks to complete.
It takes an owner talented in training to bring out their best.
They have achieved MACH titles in agility, high in trial obedience awards, have bested traditional herding breeds in herding trials,
and are crowd-pleasing favorites in appearances pulling Santa's sleigh, weight-pulling, or posing for photo-ops whenever out in public.
6. Samoyeds also excel at lure coursing.
7. They make exceptional therapy dogs and are innately gentle with children and senior citizens alike.
8. Historically kept in their nomadic owners' animal-skin chums (teepee-like tents), Samoyeds thrive with close human contact. It is not a breed that does well kept apart from the human family.
These dogs tend to get along well with other pets, but common sense should prevail when introducing animals to each other.
And remember that dogs are like children—they need to know and understand the rules of the household.
9. They have lots of energy and need sufficient exercise.
They make terrific walking companions; some enjoy swimming.
Most love the snow.
10. The Samoyed Club of America Education and Research Foundation (SCARF) is an invaluable resource for Samoyed owners.
Those seeking to add a Samoyed to their family should ensure that the breeder they choose (and who chooses them) is an SCA member
who has signed the club's code of ethics and
who breeds the healthiest and best possible representations of the breed.
So, now you know a little more about The Smiling Samoyed.

4 Fun Characteristics of the Papillon Dog Breed.
Today I will talk about 4 Fun Characteristics of the Papillon Dog Breed.
Sometimes called the “butterfly dog” because of its unusual ear shape—” papillon” means butterfly in French—the Papillon is one of the oldest toy breeds.
Originally called the Dwarf Spaniel or Continental Toy Spaniel, the Papillon was depicted in artwork as early as the 16th century.
Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette have known fans of the breed. Because of all of its sterling qualities, the Papillon is as popular today, as ever.
If your checklist for the perfect pet includes beauty, brains, versatility, and constant loving companionship, BUT you want that all in a small package, the Papillon is for you.
Beauty:
Ears that resemble the outspread wings of a butterfly, a long flowing coat, and a plumed tail all contribute to the Papillon’s elegant grace.
Lovers of the breed refer to it as “sensible glamour” because Papillons are relatively easy to groom. In fact the phrase, “I woke up like this” may have been coined with the Papillon in mind.
Brains:
Papillons can be trained to do almost anything.
They thrive on mental stimulation and work.
Far from being just ornamental, the Papillon’s trainability and eagerness to please help him excel in everything from dog sports to tricks to the show ring.
Papillons also tend to learn from every experience, whether good or bad, so consistent, positive training is a must.
With all that brainpower, there’s no end to what you can teach him.
Versatility:
These lively, alert little dogs are good at everything they try. In fact, they’re one of the most popular toy breeds in obedience trials.
They do well in agility, too, and seem to fly over the obstacle course.
They’re also natural retrievers; try one out with a miniature Frisbee and see who gets tired first.
Papillons are stand-outs at dog shows;
they seem to have an innate ability to show themselves,
with their plumed tail waving, butterfly ears erect,
and an attention-getting, happy, dancing movement on the leash.
As if all that weren’t enough, Papillons are often used as therapy dogs and even have excellent tracking abilities.
Companionship:
The Papillon has been a companion dog for centuries, and it’s really what he does best.
Whether curled up in your lap, joining you on errands, “helping” you with chores, training for the show ring, taking car rides, or even joining you in the bathroom, he needs to be with you.
If you’re not home, another pet, even a cat, is his second choice. What he does not want is to be alone.
Luckily, you can take your Papillon almost anywhere,
since he stands a diminutive eight-to-eleven inches tall and weighs somewhere between three and ten pounds.
Anyone who claims not to like toy breeds has never met a Papillon.
Their beauty, elegance, talents, and attachment to humans make them a breed that’s virtually impossible not to love.
So, now you know a little more about the Papillon Dog Breed.

15 Popular Presidents and Their Dogs.
Today I will talk about 15 Popular Presidents and Their Dogs.
From Washington’s Foxhounds to Obama’s famous Portuguese Water Dogs, presidential dogs are as traditional as baseball and apple pie.
Almost all of our presidents have shared the White House with a dog, and often more than one.
These presidential dogs became as much a staple of the capitol as the rest of the First Family and “spoke” more than words ever could about the nature of our leaders.
In January 2021, Joe Biden’s two German Shepherd Dogs Champ and Major restored the tradition of presidential pups to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
To celebrate the lives of First Pets, we take a look back at some of the most famous four-legged friends in American history.
George Washington.
George Washington, the “Father of Our Nation,” is also the father of American Foxhounds.
In 1770, Washington imported a number of hounds from England, and in 1785, the Marquis de Lafayette gave him some French hounds.
Washington maintained and carefully bred these hounds, and they became the ancestors of today’s American Foxhound.
More than 30 hounds were listed in Washington’s journals, including Sweet Lips, Drunkard, Tipler, and Tipsy. Washington didn’t invent American Foxhounds single-handedly, but he was a key player in the breed’s development.
Thomas Jefferson.
Thomas Jefferson became interested in Briards while serving as minister to France.
He purchased a pregnant female, named Buzzy, and started his breeding program.
Lafayette also sent Jefferson two more Briards to help protect the sheep at Monticello.
There is no record of them living at the White House.
Theodore Roosevelt.
Theodore Roosevelt owned a Saint Bernard named Rollo, a Pekingese named Manchu (belonging to the President’s daughter Alice),
a Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Sailor Boy, his son Kermit’s Manchester Terrier called Blackjack,
and a Bull Terrier named Pete, who ripped the pants of a French ambassador.
Herbert Hoover.
Herbert Hoover owned a Wire Fox Terrier named Big Boy,
a Norwegian Elkhound called Weejie,
an Irish Wolfhound named Patrick, and a Belgian Malinois named King Tut.
Franklin Roosevelt.
Franklin Roosevelt’s Scottish Terrier Fala reportedly received more fanmail than many presidents.
Franklin Roosevelt also had a Bullmastiff named Blaze, two Irish Setters named Jack and Jill,
a Bulldog named Pal,
an English Setter named Winks,
another Scottish Terrier named Meggie,
a German Shepherd Dog named Major,
and a Great Dane named President,
which must have made things confusing in the White House.
Dwight Eisenhower.
Dwight Eisenhower owned two Scottish Terriers named Caacie and Telek, and a Weimaraner named Heidi.
