More than 1500 people died in the disaster, but they weren’t the only casualties. The ship carried at least twelve dogs, only three of which survived. First-class passengers often traveled with their pets. The Titanic was equipped with a first-rate kennel and the dogs were well-cared for, including daily exercise on deck. There was even an informal dog show scheduled for April 15, which, sadly, never took place. Aside from the kenneled dogs, some first-class passengers kept pets in their staterooms, with the crew turning a blind eye. How Many Dogs Survived the Titanic? The three dogs that survived had a few things in common: they were being kept in staterooms, not in the kennel, and they were tiny. They were taken into lifeboats by their owners, most likely wrapped in blankets or tucked under a coat. Lady: a Pomeranian purchased by Margaret Bechstein Hays, in Paris. Her owner took Lady, wrapped in a blanket, aboard Lifeboat 7. Sun Yat Sen: a Pekingese belonging to Myra and Henry S. Harper, publishing magnate. The couple and their dog were on Lifeboat 3. According to J. Joseph Edgette, a historian at Widener University and curator of a museum exhibit about the Titanic, Mr. Harper said, “There seemed to be lots of room, and nobody made any objection.” Another Pomeranian: owned by Martin and Elizabeth Jane Rothschild. Mrs. Rothschild hid the dog until the following morning when those on Lifeboat 6 were rescued by the RMS Carpathia. The crew initially refused to take the dog on board, but Mrs. Rothschild insisted. Mr. Rothschild didn’t survive the shipwreck. How Many Dogs Died on the Titanic? History records at least nine other canine passengers, although there may have been more. Another casualty was a champion French Bulldog, Gamin de Pycombe, whose owner had purchased him in England before the voyage. A week after The Titanic sank, New York, hosted the French Bulldog National Specialty. One of the show’s judges on the day was Samuel Goldenberg, who had boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg in order to get to New York to be a judge. Stories From the Titanic. An apocryphal story describes a Newfoundland named Rigel that belonged to First Officer William Murdoch. According to the story, which even appeared in the New York Herald newspaper, Rigel withstood the freezing North Atlantic waters and barked to get the attention of the Carpathia’s crew, which helped the rescuers locate the lifeboats. However, according to the Smithsonian and other sources, there is no record of Rigel anywhere, including survivors’ accounts. The story didn’t stand up to fact-checking and has largely been discounted. There is one story, however, that is both true and heartbreaking. One passenger, Ann Elizabeth Isham, boarded the Titanic in Cherbourg with her Great Dane. She refused to leave the ship without her dog, which was too big to go on a lifeboat. They Get Their Name From the Sport of Bullbaiting The Bulldog was so-named because this type of dog was ideal for the English sport of bullbaiting, which involved tethering a bull to a stake in the ground and encouraging dogs to try to bite the bull’s nose. Bulldogs were well-suited for this sport because of their vicious and fearless nature. Breeders bred the dogs to have large, powerful heads and loose skin so that they could recover from an attack and keep fighting. Fact number two. The Breed Almost Became Extinct The English Parliament outlawed bullbaiting in 1835, leaving the Bulldog with no purpose. Their numbers rapidly declined, but some Bulldog lovers did not want to see the breed die out. Bulldog breeders eliminated the breed’s viciousness so that these dogs could become pets. Fact number three. They Can’t Swim Well Certainly, not all dog breeds are made to be Olympic-level swimmers, but if you put a Bulldog in the water without a doggie life jacket, he will be in some trouble. Even though he is only 16 inches tall, he can weigh 50 pounds. His short legs and small hindquarters aren’t equipped to keep his dense body afloat and his large head above the water. But one of the heroes of World War II was Smoky, a tiny Yorkshire Terrier. American soldiers found Smoky in a New Guinea foxhole and she became the full-time companion of Corporal Bill Wynne. She ate what he ate and slept where he slept. More than that, Smoky flew rescue and reconnaissance missions and even barked to warn Corporal Wynne of incoming shells. Being a typical Yorkie, Smoky was adept at learning tricks and worked with Special Services to entertain soldiers in field hospitals. She continued to do so back in the U.S., having been sequestered in an oxygen mask case for the flight home. Smoky appeared on television and made public appearances while continuing to comfort soldiers in veterans’ hospitals. In fact, because of her work with vets, Smoky is considered by some to be America’s first therapy dog. There are memorials to her across the country and in Australia, including at the AKC Museum of the Dog in New York City.

When the plane crashed into the building, 18 floors above her, Roselle calmly led Hingson through the chaos, down 78 floors. It took over an hour to make their descent and get out of the building. Even as Tower Two collapsed, Roselle never wavered from her job, guiding Hingson through the debris and smoke to shelter in a subway entrance. She then led her owner 40 blocks to a friend’s apartment. After the attacks, Hingson left New York for California where he worked for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Roselle lived with the Hingson family for the rest of her life, dying on June 26, 2011. She received the AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE) in 2002 as well as posthumously receiving the 2011 Hero Dogs Award from the American Humane Association.

From zero to Hero!! Back in 2017, during a forest walk in Huddinge in Sweden, a family made a discovery that led to our first story. No one will understand how a husky puppy could be abandoned, but when the pup was found, it could hardly breathe and its tail was covered in fly larvae nests. The family immediately took the puppy to an animal hospital in Danderyd - even though they had to perform resuscitation during the journey, and they didn’t really know if he would survive. After amazing work by the hospital and Hundstallet (an animal sanctuary run by the Swedish Dog Protection Association) funds were raised to nurse and help the husky puppy back to life. Today, the puppy lives with his new family in Täby. When he was adopted by the Almgren-Borg family, he was very weak, he could hardly walk and had to be hand fed. Now, he is a strong determined husky, named Hero - after the mountain where he was found!

Today I will talk about 15 Rare Dog Breeds. There are many dog breeds in the world, and their popularity varies depending on location. Some breeds are truly ancient, while others have just been registered. Cross-breeding and working necessities have brought the development and birth of new breeds, while wars and other factors have led to the extinction of others. Currently, the World Canine Organization (FCI) recognizes around 350 dog breeds, but there are few people that know them all. For this reason, AnimalWised has put together a list of 15 rare dog breeds that you probably don't know or don't know too well. #1. Puli. The first of our 15 rare dog breeds is the Puli, also called Hungarian Puli, native to Hungary and originally used for herding and watching over grazing sheep. While it almost became extinct during World War II, the Puli has a loyal and active temperament and is an excellent companion. They are easy to train, so they are perfect for competing in Agility courses. #2. Clumber Spaniel. The Clumber Spaniel is one of the rare breeds of hunting dogs native to Britain: in fact, it is one of the Vulnerable Native Breeds of the UK. It was named after Clumber Park, where the Duke of Newcastle first met these dogs in the 19th Century. Although they were used as hunting dogs, Clumber Spaniels are not particularly fast or active; however, they are good trackers. It is common to see them carrying objects in their mouth as if to present some trophies. Currently, the Clumber Spaniel is only used as a companion dog and has a good and loving character. #3. Cirneco dell'Etna. The Cirneco dell'Etna is a dog breed that is quite rare outside its place of origin, Sicily. This hound has trouble getting used to city living, as it requires constant exercise and lots of activity. Despite being a very loyal animal, the Cirneco dell'Etna is a difficult dog to train. Their most peculiar trait is their large and erect ears. #4. Mexican Hairless Dog. The Xoloitzcuintle, Xolo or Mexican hairless dog is one of the rare dog breeds from Mexico, as its name suggests. It is very popular in its native country, and its origin is old, dating back to the Maya and Aztecs who used them to protect their homes. The Xolo is noble and extremely clever, and it comes in three sizes and a coated variety: Toy Mexican hairless dog: 23 to 36 cm (9 to 14 in) Medium Mexican hairless dog: 38 to 51 cm (15 to 20 in) Standard Mexican hairless dog: 51 to 76 cm (20 to 30 in). #5. Saluki. The Saluki or Persian Greyhound is a rare breed native to the Middle East. It is believed to be the oldest breed, as it was domesticated thousands of years ago in the Fertile Crescent. In fact, the Saluki appears in Ancient Egyptian art! This elegant greyhound has a physical structure optimized to reach high speeds, and their coat can come in many colors. By nature, Saluki dogs are quiet, peaceful, and very loyal. #6. Schipperke. The Schipperke is a small herding dog of Belgian origin, more specifically from Flanders. It is one of the more active, curious, and energetic rare breeds, and despite its small size, it needs a lot of exercises and daily training. They are ideal as watchdogs, and they love water and hunting small rodents. The most peculiar feature of the Schipperke is its fox-like appearance. #7. Plott Hound. Another rare dog breed is the Plott Hound, which was originally bred in Germany to hunt wild boar. It was taken to North Carolina in the US for the purpose of hunting bears, and nowadays it is the official state dog breed. Currently, the Plott Hound is still used as a hunting dog, as it is particularly effective when it hunts in packs. It needs room to exercise, and it is not suitable for apartments or small homes. The Plott Hound loves playing in the water and interacting with people. #8. Swedish Vallhund. The Swedish Vallhund or Swedish Cow Dog is, of course, native to Sweden. This herding dog was first bred by the Vikings to be a guard, hunt rodents, and to herd cattle. The Swedish Vallhund wants to feel loved and is very loyal to its master, but it can be reserved with strangers. When you think about a Saint Bernard, it's easy to envision a fun day playing in the snow, followed by a cozy night curled up together by the fire, you with a good book and hot cocoa, her with a crunchy bone. A Saint's sweet, loving, and calm disposition coupled with her gigantic size makes you feel safe, and that's exactly what these former search-and-rescue animals want you to be. Alert but gentle with children, Saint Bernards are delightful family companions, eager to participate in whatever is going on at home—some even pout a bit if they feel left out! While Saints do thrive in cold weather, there's no need to live in their native Swiss Alps to enjoy them. Karen Shaw Becker, DVM, is the author of Real Food for Healthy Pets and co-founder of Dr. Becker's Bites. She believes it's essential for animal guardians to make knowledgeable decisions to maximize the health of their animals. She says "both short-haired and long-haired Saint Bernards adapt well to most environments because of their flexible, easy-going personalities as long as they always have a cool place to rest." Appearance. Saint Bernard is one of the world's largest dogs, not only because of height—about 30 inches or higher at the shoulder—but also because of their weight. Male dogs easily range from 140–180 pounds, while female pups are approximately 120–140 pounds. Maybe they leave one paw off the scale. The proud bearing of a Saint starts with her large round head lifting from a deep chest, and a massive square muzzle is slightly raised to sniff the air. Her sense of smell is excellent. Jowls hang loose and so do her ears, short and floppy framing her face—also referred to as a mask. Her eyes are deep-set and soft brown. Some Saints appear to have actual masks, as their eyes and cheeks may be black, brown, or red. The white on the tip of their tails and along their bellies, forepaws, and chest extends to their muzzles, and it often continues in a long line between the eyes to the cap. Coat colors are either red and white or white and brindle. Few things demonstrate power like a Saint Bernard's body, a block of solid muscle from her cap to her fluffed tail. Her back and legs are equally proportioned. All Saints have double coats to protect them from the elements, but some are short-haired and others are long-haired. Temperament. Wherever you are, that's exactly where a Saint wants to be. She's a devoted family dog who's too proud to cling, and too well-mannered to bark a lot. A Saint is simply happiest when surrounded by all her humans, especially children. She has infinite patience for kids who treat her kindly. A Saint Bernard is so mellow and loving, it's easy to overlook how just her size might be a concern. Like many large dogs, Saints have extended adolescence—usually until age 2, according to the Saint Bernard Club of America (SBCA). So a 100-pound pup with endless slobbery kisses to share and unlimited cheerful energy can be a bit much for some people, especially younger children. It's a good idea to enroll Saint Bernard puppies in kindergarten once all their vaccinations are complete. Brainy and eager to please, Saints do well during training. Classes often last a year or longer, so during this time, positive home reinforcement includes a lot of socialization and routine. This way, they get to know all family members and their friends well, and they make the connection to the important but simple cues they learn in no-fear obedience training, such as come, sit, stay, and no. Most Saints aren't overly destructive if left alone, especially if they receive proper training, but they don't like being left behind or outdoors for long periods of time. This is when they'll show a little willful cheek, barking more often, chewing on things, and doing other things you don't want, the SBCA says. Crate training helps for when you'll be gone for a couple of hours. A Saint might take refuge under the dining table or behind a chair if she feels overwhelmed, but a den to call her own is a better solution. A veterinarian can consult with you about sizes, comfort, and training.

“Hummer,” a Belgian Malinois Winner of the AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence 2022. — Hummer is a retired tracking and narcotics detection dog, along with his handler William Sessa through the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department and was certified by Custom Canine Unlimited and the National Narcotics Detection Dog Association during his time on the force. They worked together for seven years before retiring in 2021. Hummer’s tasks ranged from tracking lost individuals like elderly patients with Alzheimer’s and children and young adults with Autism to pursuing criminals. Hummer most notably sniffed out a 22-year-old murder suspect hiding in a dumpster after a long pursuit. They worked together to get massive amounts of illicit drugs off the street and protect the SWAT team.

“Axel,” a Rottweiler Winner of the AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence 2022. — Axel is an extraordinary Crisis Response Certified Canine and has visited countless hospitals, schools, first responder and military organizations. In the past two years, they have volunteered over 2,500 hours and interacted with over 50,000 people. Axel was instrumental during the pandemic when he would sit with dying patients when their family members weren’t able to visit. Axel would console nurses and doctors who’ve witnessed countless COVID-19 deaths to help process grief. In addition, he accompanies his handler to conduct Critical Incident Stress Management sessions with Police, Fire, and EMS, helping first responders process grief following a death, suicide, or traumatic event in the line of duty. Axel was also deployed to the scene of the Surfside condo collapse in Florida as well as the shootings in Virginia and Uvalde, TX.

“Scout,” a Boykin Spaniel Winner of the AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence 2022. — Scout has been serving on Coweta County Georgia’s Juvenile Court with Judge Joseph Wyant since 2013. She has supported hundreds of children, families, and court staff, helping to alleviate the tremendous stress and often overwhelming emotions that children face when involved with court proceedings. Scout acts as a calming presence for children having to testify in court as well as helps children caught in the frightening experience of being in the custody of the Department of Child and Family Services.

“Lincoln,” a Flat-Coated Retriever Winner of the AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence 2022. — Lincoln and his handler are part of King County Search Dogs in Washington State. He responds to over 40 search missions and trains hundreds of hours per year. Lincoln and his handler must be on call 24/7 and while as volunteers they are not required to respond to every call, they respond to about 80% of them. He has earned certifications in wilderness, air scent, and human remains detection. Lincoln has been deployed on urban, water, forest, and alpine searches from the shores of Puget Sound to the crest of the Cascade Mountains. He has even assisted on a few helicopter airlifts. He has found two missing at-risk persons, both in their late 80’s. One search was completed at 2:30am and he was able to locate the missing person in less than 15 minutes. The other had been missing overnight and despite the obstacles of a dense forest, was able to locate the person.

“Lotus,” a German Shepherd Dog Winner of the AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence 2022. — Lotus is an Assistance Dogs International-accredited psychiatric and mobility Service Dog for her owner, Asia Duhamel. Duhamel is a former active-duty Marine who was struggling with PTSD when she thought a service dog might help her get through daily life. Though retired from mobility except for retrievals, Lotus assists her owner in many ways, including disrupting repetitive and anxious behavior, responding to increased breathing, and crowd control. With Duhamel, that means putting her body on her lap, moving her hands out of the way, and licking her on her back until she recovers. Since receiving Lotus, Duhamel has started her training apprenticeship with Next Step Service Dogs after being ADI-accredited through the organization. She is now the lead trainer at a non-profit organization called Canine Support Teams training service dogs.

The Vizsla’s ancestors are believed to be the dogs of the Magyar tribes who settled in present-day Hungary thousands of years ago. Archeologists have found stone etchings that depict the Magyar hunter with his falcon and his dog: the canine that would become the Vizsla. #2. They’re Pointers And Retrievers. The Vizsla was the hunting dog of choice throughout the history of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The aristocrats who owned them bred them to be good pointers and retrievers. #3. They’re The Ultimate Camouflage Dogs. Vizslas are always golden rust-colored, with no variation in their coats. They have a similar brown eye color, which blends in with their coat. Their even brown tone makes them great at camouflaging, which comes in handy when hunting. #4. They Almost Went Extinct. The Vizsla suffered a severe decline in the late 19th century. Records indicate that there were only about a dozen purebreds left in the Austro-Hungarian empire at the time. Fortunately, the breed bounced back, becoming popular in multiple countries. #5. Lots Of Vizslas Have Jobs. Vizslas work as seeing eye dogs, as sniffers for the Transportation Security Administration, and as search and rescue dogs. Vizslas actually helped in the search and rescue efforts right after 9/11. #6. A Vizsla Was The First AKC Triple Champion. In order to become a Triple Champion, a dog must earn the Champion of Record title, either the Field Champion or Herding Champion title, and one additional title, in obedience, tracking, or agility. In 1980, a Vizsla named Kai became the first AKC triple champion of any breed, by winning in show, field, and obedience. #7. They’re Very Clean. They become very attached to their owners and are very loving. Vizslas have a trademark red coat and are built for activity. They can hunt, track, complete agility courses, and simply accompany you on a long jog. Without proper training and socialization, a Vizsla might be too much for a first-time dog owner. They are high-energy—requiring lots of exercise each day—but always graceful. Hailing from Hungary, these multitasking dogs thrive on human companionship. A Vizsla's worst fear is being separated from her family. So be prepared for her to follow family members from room to room. They crave attention and long to be touching their owners. There's even an old saying: "If you own a Vizsla, it lives on top of your head." #1. Appearance. A sleek red coat, sometimes referred to as golden red or russet, is what sets the Vizsla apart. Even their nose and the skin around their eyes are red. They also have long, silky ears and a lean build for their frame. A Vizsla needs to live in an active home with an owner who enjoys the great outdoors. Take her on walks, runs, hikes, or hunting excursions—they also love to swim. "Disrupting a dog during REM sleep can result in serious consequences," says the AKC. Think about your own nightmares—you usually wake up startled and scared, and it can take a few minutes to realize it was just a dream. Dogs experience the same feeling, but more serious consequences can occur. "Touching a dog when he is dreaming may startle him and cause him to bite or scratch involuntarily," the AKC says. If you do decide to wake up your dog from a nightmare, don't touch or shake her. "Consider gently rousing her by softly speaking her name. Don't touch a dog to rouse her from night terrors. While every dog is unique and has its own personality, appearance, and preferences, it also falls under its breed category as designated by the American Kennel Club (AKC). These distinctions are most clear when referring to purebred dogs, but mixed dogs with an ancestry limited to just two or three breeds may also have appearances and personalities that closely align with one particular group. The seven types of dog breeds, or breed groups, are based on the "jobs" that the dog breeds originally held, such as herding, sporting, hounds (bred for use in chasing down prey), or toy dogs, which are small breeds often referred to as lap dogs. In many official AKC dog shows, including the National Championship, dogs compete first within their specific breed for best of breed, and then within their breed group for best of the group—for example, Best Hound, Best Terrier, Best Working Dog, etc— and then the seven dogs winning best of their groups compete against each other for the coveted title of Best in Show. With more than 190 dog breeds and varieties registered with the American Kennel Club, the various breed groups have grown quite large, and include a diverse range of canines. Still, all breeds within a group are related in terms of their original "purpose," even if their appearances are very different. Here are the seven types of dog breeds, their histories, and what pet owners can expect when taking one of these four-legged friends home. While your dog is of course an individual, you can get a feel for what its personality and appearance will be like as an adult by referring to the characteristics of its specific breed as well as breed group. A quick note about training. While dogs do have breed tendencies, all will require positive training to help them reach their full potential and to fit most happily into any home. #1. Sporting Group. Dogs in the Sporting Group were bred to be a hunter’s best sidekick; their purpose is to assist with finding, flushing, catching, or retrieving feathered games such as pheasants or ducks. Human hunters rely on these canines' help with retrieving upland game birds or waterfowl. There are four basic types of sporting dogs: spaniels, pointers, retrievers, and setters. Some of the breeds in this group, such as retrievers, are especially adept at swimming and specialize in waterfowl like ducks, while setters, spaniels, and pointing breeds are known experts in hunting quail, pheasant, and other game birds in the grasslands. While these breeds may be known for performing multiple tasks to aid the hunter, each has its own specialty. Typically, pointers and setters identify and mark game by "pointing," which means striking a distinctive pose with the body held still, one front paw raised, and the snout pointing in the direction of the bird being hunted. Spaniel breeds typically flush game, which means to find the birds and frighten them into lifting off in flight, which allows the hunter to them take aim and fire. Retrievers are breeds used to recover dead and wounded games, especially from the water. All of the Sporting Group dogs are characterized by their naturally active and alert personalities, stable temperaments, as well as their hunting instincts both in the water and out in the woods. Well, you’re about to find out with these eight fun facts about the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. 1. Pembroke Welsh Corgi ancestry dates back to the 10th century. According to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America, it is believed that Pembroke’s ancestry dates back to at least the 10th century. It is unknown, however, whether they are descended from the Swedish Vallhunds that were possibly brought to Pembrokeshire by the Vikings, or from the ancestors of the present-day Schipperkes and Pomeranians brought to Wales by Flemish weavers. 2. Legend has it, they are “enchanted” dogs. Welsh legend says the fairies and elves of Wales used the Pembroke Welsh Corgi to pull fairy coaches, work fairy cattle, and serve as the steed for fairy warriors. If you look closely, even today you can see the marks of the “fairy saddle” over the shoulders in Pembroke’s coat. 3. They make world-class herding dogs. Don’t let their size fool you, these dogs have been herding for decades! From the beginning, the Welsh used Pembroke Welsh Corgis as herding dogs, family companions, and guardians of the farm. Even today, these dogs are still expert herders. Many Pembrokes even compete in AKC Herding competitions. 4. They are very different from the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. In 1934, the AKC recognized the Pembroke and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi as two distinct breeds. What is different about these two dogs? First, the Cardigan traces its origins to Cardiganshire and the Pembroke to Pembrokeshire. The dogs also have easily identifiable physical differences. The Cardigan has a longer tail, while the Pembroke’s is docked close to the body. The Pembroke has a shorter body, and the ears are pointed, while the Cardigans are more rounded at the tips. 5. A Pembroke Welsh Corgi will be your best friend and a great competitor. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is known as one of the most agreeable small house dogs and is a loyal, loving pet for families. They also are known for their intelligence and enthusiasm for working. Many Pembrokes compete in dog sports, such as agility, herding, conformation, obedience, and more. 6. Your Pembroke engages in what is known as “frapping.” Your dog may tire itself out running around in circles, dashing from room to room, also known as “frantic random acts of play” or more casually, “zoomies”. 7. Corgi means “dwarf dog.” Or at least it might. The origin of the name “Corgi” is difficult to determine. Some say it combines the Welsh word “cor,” which means to watch over or gather, with “gi,” a form of the Welsh word for dog. Others have the interpretation that the word “cor” means dwarf, and combine that with “gi,” you have a dwarf dog. Either way, these certainly describe the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. And of course, the “Pembroke Welsh” part of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi name comes from the dog’s origins. 8. A Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Rufus was the mascot for Amazon. In the early days of Amazon.com, a Pembroke named Rufus belonged to the editor-in-chief and principal engineer and came with them to work every day. Known for walking the halls, attending meetings, and snoozing, Rufus became the unofficial Amazon mascot. Rufus is also the dog Amazon employees have to thank for their dog-friendly culture.

Once the wagon was out on the street, the Dalmatians would run beside it. The brave, loyal dogs also served an important purpose once the wagon approached a fire. Horses are afraid of fire, and the Dalmatians' presence could distract and comfort the horses as they pulled the wagon closer to a blaze. The Dalmatians also stood guard near the wagon to ensure that no one stole the firefighter's belongings, equipment, or horses. You would think that with the invention of the automobile, Dalmatians would no longer be needed by firemen. Some firehouses, however, have kept the dogs around as friendly companions in order to preserve the tradition. Dalmatians continue to guard firefighters' possessions, but instead of running alongside fire trucks, they ride inside of them. The dogs are also known to catch and kill rats that have taken up residence in firehouses.
