Southwest Black-on-White Pottery, A Brief History
This was my presentation at the Southwest Kiln Conference, a brief history of black on white pottery replication in the American Southwest. This documentary delves into the ancient history of black on white pottery in the Southwest and the various types. Then it goes into early efforts to replicate that ancient black on white pottery and some of the individual potters who have made contributions to black on white pottery replication. I show how to identify the firing atmosphere and paint recipe for ancient mineral painted pottery from all over the Southwest. And finally I talk a bit about my attempts to create black on white replica pottery and what methods I have had success with ad some ideas for future experiments.

Stop Glazing Your Pottery
Glaze is wonderful stuff but it's not the only way to finish pottery and a lot of people unfortunately think it is. Let's talk about just how food safe glazed and unglazed pottery can be and what glaze alternatives exist. There are many good reasons to not glaze your pottery and one of those is the texture and beauty of the raw clay surface with gets lost under gobs of chemical glaze.

Cooking Wetherill Stew in a Clay Pot

While I wait for the stew to cook I will delve into the history of this dish, who is the archaeologist Emil Haury, who is the guide John Wetherill and how did these two men work together to bring us this dish. Learn how to cook with primitive pottery over open coals just like the ancients did.

Make An Olla To Stay Cool In The Hot Summer
Arizona was a miserable place in the summer before air conditioning. Yet people have lived and thrived here for millennia, how did they deal with the extreme heat? One trick is the earthenware water jar called an "olla" that keeps the water inside cool with evaporation. This video takes a brief look at the history of the olla in the old Southwest and then I show how to make one and test out its amazing water cooling effect.

Hand-Building Pottery At Home - Easy Peasy Mug
You can make beautiful and functional pottery at home using just your hands and simple tools. This video will take you from a lump of clay to a finished, usable mug using only tools you have at your house or can easily buy at a nearby store. Hand built pottery is made without the use of a potters wheel but in this case I have taken it a step farther using only a knife, a gift card and a spoon to form a mug. Afterwards I fire this mug in my yard without a kiln using a few bricks and charcoal.
