Southwest Black-on-White Pottery, A Brief History

142

This was my presentation at the Southwest Kiln Conference, a brief history of black on white pottery replication in the American Southwest. This documentary delves into the ancient history of black on white pottery in the Southwest and the various types. Then it goes into early efforts to replicate that ancient black on white pottery and some of the individual potters who have made contributions to black on white pottery replication. I show how to identify the firing atmosphere and paint recipe for ancient mineral painted pottery from all over the Southwest. And finally I talk a bit about my attempts to create black on white replica pottery and what methods I have had success with ad some ideas for future experiments.
