Chunky Gal Cheepers

It’s a warm summer morning in Louisiana and Cara is foraging for yummy bugs and bits of flowers and seeds in the yard! You can hear all the wild birds and bugs as if you were sitting right here in Louisiana!

Salty lays her egg this morning! A hen gets her nesting spot comfortable and waits as the egg finishes traveling the oviduct. Once it’s time, the hen stands up as the egg falls gently into the nest. Then she sits back down to rest and check the egg.

The rain has gone and it’s time to get back to business for the cheepers! Salty kinda seems happy that the sun is back out, but she is the most ornery cheeper so it’s hard to tell. The chickens had a yummy smorgasbord of leftovers as a treat!

Andy got into a fight with an animal of some sort today. Took a nip out of his waddle and injured his comb! 😢 I think it was probably a hawk, but I’m going to keep a close eye on him and Tom. They get along well because they are hatchmates, but it’s possible Tom caused the injuries in a fight for dominance. Got Andy’s booboos cleaned up and applied ointment to help it heal and keep away infection!

It’s been rain rain raining here and the cheepers do not enjoy being cold and wet! No snow for Louisiana, just more rain to refill the swamps! Tom is ready for some sunshine so the flock can enjoy foraging again. The heat lamp helps them get dry and warm before it’s time to sleep~

Tore the leftover tortillas from lunch into quarters for the chickens to enjoy. Turns out the toasted tortillas are a little to difficult to peck apart for them! Made the pieces smaller and they were much happier!

Checkers had to come over and demand attention when the cheepers got some french fries as a treat. He gets along well with all the chickens EXCEPT Tammy. Tammy will always chase him away!

The boys were still quite loud even though it was a cold, rainy day! The cheepers got pretty wet so I let them have some time under the heat lamp before bedtime. They finally got dry and were ready to sleep!

They wanted the peach slices so badly that they were jumping for the container! Checkers had to come over and see what all the fuss was about with the chickens.

Buttercup is laying an egg in her and Salty’s favorite nesting box! Buttercup and Salty are both silver laced Wyandottes and their eggs are usually smaller and more pale than the other eggs.

An old soft apple is the perfect treat for the chickens on a frosty Louisiana morning! They were literally jumping to try to knock it out of my hand~

Gotta check everything is good in the chicken pen and run before I close the door and gate. Sunny was happy and even purring~

The chickens get to feast on stale holiday gingersnap cookies! Buttercup and Cara were being VERY territorial over them~

Missed the past two days due to recovering from being sick with an ear/sinus infection while also putting on a birthday party! But we are back! Tammy is quiet and uses it to her advantage to try to steal the leftover bread goodies!

The cheepers get to enjoy some stale holiday leftovers on a cool Louisiana evening. They can recognize special treats and WILL hop and try to tear at the bag or paper to get their prize!

They love the safe human leftovers from home cooked or restaurant meals and will hunt for the prime pieces! The doggy bag from junior’s birthday lunch went to good use and will go to making more eggs!

Checkers being a good kitty checking up on the cheepers as they hunt for bugs before the rain starts. He makes sure his scent is ready to deter predators even while he is asleep inside during the night!

Introducing new homemade nesting boxes that Salty and Cara demonstrate as well as Andy being protective over the hens as they eat. A couple hens were already out of the pen and little Tom was watching over them. My goal is to make a new video of every single day of 2023 of our cheepers! Watch them keep growing and maybe even hatch chicks in the spring!

Here is an official introduction to each of the cheepers and Checkers the cat! They are enjoying some overly ripe bananas for breakfast along with their scratch grain this morning!

Everyone enjoys some scratch grain on a rainy Louisiana morning, except Buttercup. Buttercup has got an egg to lay and no time to waste! She doesn’t quite like the open make-do nesting box so goes back to the enclosed one. Gonna have to come up with a new solution to enclose their former favorite spot to be broody, the rubber pan.

Been busy getting the cheepers a new large poultry pen that could be covered/wrapped for bad storms and cold temperatures! They are now snug as bugs in a rug!

Checkers the cat makes sure the cheepers roost for bedtime in their run as night falls in Louisiana
