How to Replace a Segment of Sidewalk (DIY Sidewalk Repair Using Concrete Bags)
🛠 Tools and Materials Used: https://amzn.to/42Rhsvk
🧰 RapidSet Concrete Used: https://www.ctscement.com/product/cts-24-6-concrete-mix
⚙️ Mud Mixer Information: https://www.mudmixer.com/andrew
Learn how to replace a segment of sidewalk with this DIY Sidewalk Repair Video. In this Video, you will learn how to remove and demolish the existing sidewalk, how to prepare the sidewalk subbase, how to mix and pour the new concrete, and how to finish the concrete sidewalk with rounded concrete edges, control joints, and a concrete broom finish.
To Replace a cracked or damaged segment of sidewalk, start by removing the old sidewalk. Excavate and compact the soil as needed and add apply a ~4” gravel subbase beneath the sidewalk area. Next, use lumber to “form” the sides of the sidewalk and apply concrete to the sidewalk area. Screed the concrete surface to get a uniform layer and then finish the sidewalk concrete surface using a hand trowel and edging trowel. Apply a broom-finish to the concrete surface and add control joints as needed. Finally allow the concrete sidewalk to cure.
Specifically, video will focus on how to replace a damaged section of concrete sidewalk at the end of a driveway.
Additionally, you can learn how to pour a curved concrete sidewalk by watching my "Curved Concrete Sidewalk" video linked here: https://youtu.be/EJGxT4gNyZU
You can also read my "How to Pour a Concrete Sidewalk" Blog Article for even more information: https://atimprovements.com/how-to-pour-a-concrete-sidewalk/
If you are looking to mix the concrete for your concrete sidewalk by hand using bags on concrete, check out my "5 Ways to mix dry concrete" video linked here:
https://youtu.be/2WuPI_rxBrs
Below are the step by step instructions for how to Replace a Segment of Concrete Sidewalk:
1. Plan out your Sidewalk Project
Before you can pour a concrete sidewalk, you will need to spend some time planning out the project. Things you will need to think about before starting the project are:
- How much concrete will you need to replace the segment of sidewalk?
- How thick will the concrete sidewalk be?
- Will a gravel subbase be used?
2. Demolish and Remove the Existing Concrete Sidewalk
The first step in replacing a damaged segment of concrete sidewalk is to remove the existing sidewalk. To remove an existing sidewalk, it is recommended that you rent a jackhammer from your local big box store so that you can break up the concrete into smaller, more manageable chunks.Additionally, use a concrete saw or an angle grinder to cut a control line in the concrete. This will allow you to use the jackhammer to remove a clean, straight line in the concrete.
3. Excavate the New Sidewalk Area as Needed
For most new sidewalks, I recommend that you excavate approximately 8” below grade. This will allow for a four inch gravel sub-base and four inches of sidewalk concrete thickness. Compact the soil using a hand tamp or mechanical compactor.
4. Apply a Gravel Subbase to the Sidewalk Area
After compacting the soil, you will want to apply approximately 4” of a gravel subbase to the excavated area. Typically, No. 57 stone is used for the gravel subbase.
5. Construct Your Concrete Forms and Position Them in Place
After applying gravel to your new concrete sidewalk area, you will want to construct the concrete “forms” for your sidewalk. Concrete “forms” are simply the frame/perimeter for your sidewalk. To construct the forms, it is recommended that you use 2”x4” lumber. If you are replacing a curved section of sidewalk, you will need to use a flexible form material.
6. Reinforce the Concrete sidewalk (if necessary)
Consider using steel “rebar” or steel wire mesh to the concrete to give it additional strength and to help prevent it from cracking.
7. Apply Concrete to the Concrete Sidewalk Application Area
At this stage, simply mix up the concrete (or get it delivered via concrete truck) and fill up the entire sidewalk form area with concrete.
8. Finish the Concrete
After applying concrete to the sidewalk form area, you will need to “finish” the concrete. Start by using a straight piece of lumber to screed the surface of the concrete. Then, use a finishing trowel, edging trowel, etc. to finish the surface of the concrete. Give the Concrete Sidewalk a "Broom Finish" if desired.
9. Finishing Touches
Lastly, remove the forms and enjoy your new concrete sidewalk!

How to Trim Out a Basement Window (DIY Drywall Return on a Basement Window - Finish Your Basement!)
🧰 🛠 Tools and Materials needed: https://amzn.to/3JE2fpC
Learn how to Trim Out a Basement Window with this DIY step-by-step guide. For my basement windows, I used the "drywall return" method.
When finishing a basement, you will likely need to install drywall and trim around the basement windows. However, the drywall return method of finishing basement windows requires no trim. Although there are many ways to successfully “trim out” a basement window, using drywall is both a simple and inexpensive method for giving your basement windows a finished look. This article will also show you how to cut a window sill out of common lumber.
To install drywall a drywall return around a basement window, start by cutting drywall for the top and sides of the window. Cut they drywall such that it contacts the window’s frame on one side and so that it is flush with the wall drywall on the other side. Then, install corner bead and finish the drywall with joint compound. Caulk any joints between the drywall and window.
To cut your own window sill for a basement window, select a piece of lumber that is approximately 1.5″ wider than the depth of the basement window cavity. You may need to “rip” the lumber to a suitable width using a table or circular saw. Cut the off the sill so that it is 3″ longer than the window cavity on both sides. Next, use a router to give the window sill a rounded edge and use a jigsaw to cut the penetrations on both sides of the window sill – leaving a 3″ overhang on each side. Finally, caulk any gaps and paint the window sill (if desired)
This video will outline every single step outlined above - in detail.

How to Replace a Basement Window in Concrete (DIY Step-by-Step)
All tools and Materials Needed: https://amzn.to/3JE2fpC
Learn how to replace a basement window in concrete with this DIY friendly video. Specifically, I will show you how to remove a basement window and install a new vinyl window.
To replace a Basement Window, you will need to follow these basic steps:
1. Purchase Replacement Window(s)
The first step in replacing basement windows is to order your replacement window(s). To do this, measure the rough opening of you concrete foundation window penetration and compare those dimensions to available replacement window dimensions. There are many different sizes and styles of windows, so spend sufficient time ensuring that the replacement window you purchase will fit within your existing window penetration.
2. Remove the Existing Window
The second step in replacing a basement window is to remove the existing window. Start by removing any screws or nails that are holding the window in place. Then, remove the glass panels (if possible). Next, use a reciprocating saw to cut the top of the window frame and then try to loosen the frame from the concrete it is embedded within. If the window is stuck, use a pry bar to carefully loosen it from the home's foundation.
3. Position The New Window in Place
Position the replacement window into the opening and center it as best as possible. Use shims to hold the window in place.
4. Level the Window and Install Shims
To ensure the replacement window is level, use a carpenter's level to check for any unevenness. Use shims to make any necessary adjustments to the window's level, placing them in the gap between the window and the rough opening.
5. Apply Spray Foam around the Perimeter of the Window
Once the window is in place, secured with shims, and level, apply spray foam insulation around the perimeter of the window. The spray foam will help seal any gaps and improve the energy efficiency of your home. Be sure to follow the instructions on the spray foam can and wear gloves and protective eyewear during this step.
6. Cut off Excess Spray Foam and Caulk Around Window
After the spray foam has dried, use a utility knife to cut off any excess foam that is sticking out. Then, apply caulk around the exterior of the window to seal any remaining gaps. This will help prevent air and water from entering your basement. If you have a damaged any of the concrete around your window, you can repair it with rapid setting concrete and trowel at this stage of the project.
In conclusion, replacing a basement window is a manageable DIY project that can improve the energy efficiency and overall look of your home. Be sure to take the necessary safety precautions, measure the size of the opening accurately, and use the right tools and materials for the job. With these steps, you can replace a basement window with ease and enjoy the benefits of a more comfortable and efficient home.

Mixing concrete with a mechanical mixer is much easier than mixing concrete with a wheelbarrow. You can typically rent a mechanical mixer from your local big bog store for a few bucks. To use a concrete mechanical mixer, simply plug in the mixer, turn on the rotation, and then add water and concrete to the mixer. The Mechanical mixer will mix the concrete up via the rotation of the mixer. Then, simply pour it out where you need concrete.
3. Mixing Concrete with the “Mud Mixer” tool.
The Mud Mixer is an excellent tool for mixing large amounts of concrete. If you are a contractor or a DIY'er who does a lot of concrete work, the Mud Mixer is a must have. To use the Mud Mixer, add dry concrete mix to the hopper, adjust the amount of water, and then let the mechanical rotation of the auger do all the work. The Mud Mixer can mix up to 40 concrete bags in one hour, making it a great option for mixing concrete.
4. Mixing Concrete in a Bucket with a Drill Mixer
If you’re looking for a quick way to mix small amounts of concrete, mixing concrete with a drill mixer in a bucket is an excellent option. The process involves adding water to a 5 gallon bucket and then gradually adding concrete mix. After adding the correct amount of water and concrete, mix with a drill mixer. This method is faster than mixing by hand and requires less effort. Mixing concrete in a bucket is typically only suitable for small projects
5. Mixing Concrete in Place by Pouring Dry Mix and Then Adding Water with a Hose.
Mixing concrete in place is typically only a good option for small areas that do not require any structural strength. This method of concrete mixing involves pouring the dry concrete mix onto the surface where it is needed and then adding water with a hose. This method is ideal for projects that require the concrete to be placed in a specific small location. However, it can be challenging to achieve consistent mixing throughout the entire project.

How to Pour a Concrete Front Porch Sidewalk (DIY Curved Concrete Sidewalk)
Learn how to pour a concrete front porch sidewalk with this DIY Step-by-Step Video. Specifically, learn how to pour a DIY curved concrete sidewalk for a front entryway using dry concrete mix.
To Pour a DIY Concrete Sidewalk, you will need the following tools and materials:
- Concrete Finishing Trowel: https://amzn.to/3Za9tHu
- Concrete Edging Trowel: https://amzn.to/3m2KQh5
- Concrete Grooving Trowel: https://amzn.to/3IDNi5x
- Concrete Finishing Broom: https://amzn.to/3kIa8kh
- Dry Concrete Mix: https://www.ctscement.com/product/cts-24-6-concrete-mix
- Concrete Mixer: www.mudmixer.com/andrew
- Concrete Forms: Harboard or 2"x4" lumber
- Stakes: https://amzn.to/3xZMqDb
Below are the General Steps for Pouring a Curved Concrete Front Porch Sidewalk:
1. Demolish the Existing Sidewalk (if applicable)
This video will show you how to demolish an existing concrete sidewalk using a jackhammer.
2. Prepare the Area for New Concrete
Typically, you will want a 4" thick concrete sidewalk and a 4" thick gravel subbase. Excavate the area as needed.
3. Build the Concrete Forms for the Sidewalk
Construct the concrete forms using 2"x4" lumber or Hardboard (ripped down to 4" strips) if you are building a curved sidewalk.
4. Mix up the dry Concrete
For this specific DIY Concrete Project, I used Rapidset's 24/6 Concrete Mix and I Mixed it using the Mud Mixer.
5. Apply Concrete to the Forms and Screed the Concrete Surface Flat
Fill the concrete forms with concrete and then use a flat piece of lumber to screed the surface of the concrete flat.
6. Finish the Surface of the Concrete Sidewalk
Use a concrete finishing trowel to finish the surface of the concrete so that it is smooth and even.
7. Use an Edging trowel to "Round Over" the edges
Run a concrete edging trowel between the edge of the concrete and the forms to give the concrete a nice rounded edge.
8. Add control joints (if applicable)
If you are pouring a large concrete sidewalk, add a control joint with the use of grooving trowel.
9. Apply a Broom Finish to the Concrete Surface
If desired, use a concrete broom to give the surface of the concrete a "broom finish". This will give the concrete a textured look and will make the face of the concrete non-slip.
10. Allow the Concrete to Cure
Let the concrete cure and harden (typically 24-48 hours)
11. Remove the Concrete Forms
After allowing the concrete sidewalk to cure, remove the concrete forms.
This video will explain every step of the concrete sidewalk pouring process from start to finish.

The Best Way To Mix Dry Concrete (MUD Mixer)
I strongly believe that the Mud Mixer is the best and fastest way to mix dry concrete. I have completed many DIY concrete jobs over the years, and mixing the dry concrete has always been the most annoying part of the project. The Mud Mixer completely changed that! This tool can mix up to 40 bags in one hour and it has made my concrete projects go so much smoother. Although this product is not super practical for everyone, it is a great option for contractor's or DIY'ers that work with concrete on a regular basis.

LVP Flooring Installation (How to Install Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring in a Basement - DIY)
Learn the LVP Flooring Installation process with this DIY, beginner friendly instructional video! Specifically, you will learn how to install luxury vinyl plank flooring in a basement - but you can use these steps to install vinyl plank flooring in any room.
To install LVP (Vinyl Plank) flooring, you will need to the following tools and materials 🧰:
Vinyl Plank Flooring: https://www.metroflor.com/shop/products
LVP Installation Kit (Includes spacers, tapping block, hammer, pull-bar, etc.): https://amzn.to/3R3ynFD
Utility Knife: https://amzn.to/3QW7rY7
Straight Edge: https://amzn.to/3QL0rNP
Carpenter's Square: https://amzn.to/3GQ8YdN
Circular Saw: https://amzn.to/3w9ZMvR
Jig Saw: https://amzn.to/3ZJoxMU
Transition Moldings (Optional): https://www.metroflor.com/documents/Genesis_Moldings.pdf
To install LVP flooring as a beginner, you will need to follow these general steps:
1. Prepare the Room for LVP Installation
Preparation for vinyl plank installation includes:
- Removal of any dirt or debris from the floor.
- Ensuring that the room is perfectly flat and correct any problem areas with self-leveling underlayment.
- Removal of baseboards.
2. Position Spacers around the Room
Because LVP is a "floating floor" you will want to have 1/4" spacers positioned around the room to allow for expansion and contraction.
3. Plan out your LVP Layout.
Every successful vinyl plank flooring project begins with planning. Plan your LVP layout carefully.
4. Install the First Row of LVP.
You always want to install the first row of LVP flooring in the "back left" corner of the room.
5. Cut and Trim the Vinyl Plank Flooring as needed.
To cut LVP flooring, use a utility knife and a carpenter's square to score and snap the plank along the cut line. You can also use a miter saw, circular saw, and a jig saw to cut LVP as well.
6. Install Vinyl Plank Transition Molding (if needed).
If desired, you can install LVP transition molding to transition from one floor type to another.
7. Install Baseboard and Final Touches.
The last step in the LVP installation process is to install (or re-install) the baseboards around the room in order to hide the 1/4" expansion gap.
For even more detailed information on how to install LVP flooring, you can check out my blog article: https://atimprovements.com/lvp-flooring-installation/

Basement Drywall Tips and Tricks (How to Finish a Basement Episode 5)
If you are finishing a basement, you will likely need to hang and finish drywall. This video will show you my tips and tricks for installing drywall in a basement based on my firsthand experience.
🛠🧰 Tools needed to Install Drywall in a Basement:
- Drywall Tape: https://amzn.to/3GX6P0Y
- Drywall Knives: https://amzn.to/3X3ChjR
- Drywall Cutting Knife (jab saw): https://amzn.to/3Zvjv6I
- Rotozip (drywall cutting tool): https://amzn.to/3W2kuYX
- Drywall Joint Compound: https://amzn.to/3IM3Utz
- Mud Tray: https://amzn.to/3X3ChjR
- Drywall Screws: https://amzn.to/3iA0i2X
- Drywall lifting tool: https://amzn.to/3vTAvpB
- 120 Grit Sanding Screen: https://amzn.to/3kdH57S
Below are the general Tips and Tricks for Installing Drywall:
1. Hang the Drywall with drywall screws every 16" O.C.
2. Apply joint compound to the drywall seams.
3. Apply drywall tape to the seams and remove and excess.
4. Apply drywall tape to the inside corners.
5. Apply corner bead to the outside corners.
6. Apply additional joint compound with 10" drywall knife.
7. Apply final coat of joint compound with 12" drywall knife.
8. Sand off any rough spots with 120 grit sandpaper or sanding screen.
Please note that I do not claim to be a Drywall expert by any means. Drywall finishing is an "art" and there are a lot of people who can do a better job explaining and demonstrating the drywall finishing process than I can. One of the best explanations I have found is this video here: https://youtu.be/Mup3RHnYggA

DIY Drywall Hole Repair
In this video, I show you how to Repair a hole in drywall that was left my by tenant.
Drywall finishing is an "art" and I am far from a pro, but these are the general steps to make a DIY Drywall Repair.
Please note that the mudding and sanding step is iterative and will be the most time consuming part of the project.
To repair Drywall, you will need the following:
- Drywall Panel
- Drywall Knife
- Drywall Tape
- Drywall mud
To repair drywall, follow these general steps:
1. Cut a rectangle around the hole
2. Place a replacement panel of drywall within the rectangle you cut.
3. Mix up mud and tape the seams
4. Mud and sand until you have a smooth, even finish
5. Paint over the repair to match the wall
