Old naira notes are no longer legal tender — CBN declares
The old ₦200, ₦500 and ₦1000 notes ceased being legal tender since February 10, 2023, the CBN has declared.
This is coming despite the ruling of the Supreme Court in Abuja that banned the apex bank from implementing the February 10 expiration date for the old notes. Haladu Idris Andaza, CBN’s branch controller in Bauchi, disclosed this to newsmen on Monday, February 13.
According to DailyTrust, he said, “For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state categorically that CBN is ready and is open to receive all of those old notes based on certain conditions and criteria.
Customers are free to come to the bank and deposit which they cannot do at the commercial banks anymore because the currency has ceased to be a legal tender since the 10th of this month.
The management of the CBN decided that those customers will have a sigh of relief by coming to the offices of the okCBN in all the 36 states in the federation including FCT to deposit their money.

Valentine’s Day: Share love and not HIV - NACA DG tells Nigerians.
Valentine’s Day: Share love and not HIV - NACA DG tells Nigerians.
The Director General, of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, Dr. Gambo Aliyu, has dropped some advice for Nigerians as the country joins the rest of the world to celebrate Valentine's day.
Addressing Nigerians during an event in Abuja, Aliyu told Nigerians to take advantage of the spirit of love and togetherness that the day signifies, to know their HIV status.
He added that youths can express love within the context of caring deeply for their loved ones with the intention of protecting them from all forms of harm and avoiding risk factors that will make them vulnerable to HIV/AIDS and other STIs.
Aliyu said;
?This occasion though significant in the lives of people globally, brings a lot of cause to worry about, as the expression of love, especially among adolescents, youths and other diverse populations most often falls out of context.
?This period is observed to witness a high rate of indiscriminate sexual activities and other amoral behaviours that lead to uninformed decisions among many. This development most often than not exposes many people to a high risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Infections.
?As we express love for our partners during this Valentine?s Day, remember to love wisely. As members of a wider society your health and productivity count to your nuclear and extended families and the entire country. Nigeria stands to benefit from the pool of your contributions. So I urge you to desist from practices that might expose you to risks of contracting HIV/AIDS and/or other sexually transmitted diseases as we commemorate these special days. Once again I urge you to love wisely, share love, and not the virus.
?It is essential to reduce the trend of new HIV infection in Nigerian youths through preaching abstinence, and for those who cannot abstain, to use condoms which prevent STIs including HIV and unwanted pregnancies.
?It has become important to ensure condom option is made available as a preventive measure to youths and people of reproductive age who cannot abstain from sex, with new HIV infections highest among young people aged 15-24 years and with the national data suggesting that about 4.2 percent of young people (ages 15-24) are living with HIV.
?As we express love on this day, remember to love wisely. As members of the wider society, your health and productivity are vital to the future of our country. So, I urge you to avoid risky behaviours as we commemorate Valentine?s Day. Love Wisely, Share Love not HIV?.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa?ad Abubakar has reacted to the issue of Naira scarcity which has led to controversy across the country.
The Sultan who appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to address the problem to prevent an uprising, added that it has brought hunger and anger in the country.
Speaking at a two-day conference by the Kano State government on livestock reforms and mitigation of associated conflicts, the Monarch said;
?Let?s keep politics aside. The issues of development, especially for the common man, (should be prioritised).
?These people that God Almighty gave leadership over, one day, God forbid, will rise (against us).
?After all the English by professors (at the conference), how do we get these developments down to the common man who is a farmer, the common Fulani man who doesn?t know anything about development? He only cares about cattle.
?The people are hungry ? is there money? People are angry and hungry. Let?s see how we can douse the tension.?

20-year-old man sentenced to death for armed robbery in Lagos.
20-year-old man sentenced to death for armed robbery in Lagos.
Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe of a Lagos Special Offences Court, Ikeja, has sentenced a 20-year-old man, Nojeem Badmos, to death by hanging for armed robbery
The judge sentenced the convict on Monday, February 13, 2023, after finding him guilty as charged by the prosecution.
The judge held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt the ingredients of the two-count charge of conspiracy to commit robbery and armed robbery.
The state had charged him for conspiracy and armed robbery contrary to the provisions of sections 299 and 297 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The witness had told court that, defendant in company of two others still at large, did rob him of his bag and other valuables on his way to work sometime in July 2019, at Alagbado bus stop. He said he noticed a motorcyclist carrying two passengers approaching him.
"He suspected danger and began to run, but the two passengers on the bike came down and ran after him. He fell in the mud and the two chased after him, caught up with him and beat him up,? the prosecution witness said.
In her judgment,Justice Abike-Fadipe found the defendant guilty of the offence of conspiracy to commit robbery and sentenced him to 21 years jail term.
The judge also described the defendant?s testimony as inconsistent, stressing that the evidence of the prosecution witness, Adetokunbo Solomon (victim), were cogent and true.
In respect to armed robbery, having been found guilty, you will be hanged on the neck until you are dead and may the Lord have mercy on you,? the court held.
Earlier, the judge had gave the defendant?s counsel an opportunity for his allocutus.
The defence counsel, Mr Ajibade Benson, therefore, prayed the court to be lenient as the defendant was a first time offender.
But the prosecuting counsel, Mrs. Adebanke Ogunde, did not respond to the leniency prayer of the defence counsel.

Klopp said it felt like us, it looked like us, after the Liverpool recorded their first win in 2023
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said "it felt like us, it looked like us," after the Reds recorded their first Premier League win in 2023 with a comfortable Merseyside derby victory over Everton at Anfield.
Sean Dyche's reign as Everton manager got off to the perfect start with a win over league leaders Arsenal at Goodison Park, but the task he has taken on after succeeding sacked Frank Lampard was laid out before him in graphic detail as they remain rooted in the bottom three.
Everton had actually kept Liverpool at arm's length before they were caught by a devastating counter-attack after 36 minutes, defender James Tarkowski's header hitting the post at one end before Darwin Nunez raced clear, squaring for Mohamed Salah to take advantage of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's poor positioning with a simple finish.
Liverpool snuffed out any hopes of an Everton recovery four minutes after the break.
And it was a special moment for £45m January signing Cody Gakpo, as he tapped in Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross at the far post for his first goal since arriving at Anfield from PSV Eindhoven.
"The result is massive relief," added Klopp to BBC Match of the Day.
"The better you play the more likely you will score. The whole performance was extremely important for us because we needed to make a statement."
Liverpool show signs of life
It has been a miserable 2023 for Liverpool, encapsulated by heavy away defeats at Brentford, Brighton and Wolverhampton Wanderers, but the ease with which they were able to overcome Everton's admittedly flimsy challenge will lift the spirits.
This was a good night for Liverpool as manager Jurgen Klopp was able to include Virgil van Dijk, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota on the bench after injury, the latter getting a rapturous reception when he was introduced as a second-half substitute for his first action since picking up the muscle problem that forced him to miss the World Cup in Qatar.
Firmino also got a late outing.
Another big plus was Gakpo's goal, his first for Liverpool and a huge morale-booster for a player who has been quiet - although it would have been difficult for any new acquisition to come into such a struggling side who are ninth in the Premier League table, nine points adrift of the Champions League places.
Gakpo's confidence visibly lifted after his goal, showing assured touches and looking more at ease than at any time in his short Liverpool career.
"The dream is that you score in the first minute of the first game you play," said Gakpo. "In the end I have had to wait a little bit but I'm really delighted that I can score this one."
Another major plus for Klopp and Liverpool was the outstanding display of 18-year-old Stefan Bajcetic, who showed astonishing maturity in midfield with a comprehensive range of passing, a sure touch and a willingness to engage in the physical exchanges. It was a complete performance by the youngster.
Liverpool were nowhere near their best - they did not have to be - but the sight of Salah on the scoresheet, goals from trademark lightning counter-attacks and a clean sheet will change the mood around Anfield considerably before a crucial visit to Newcastle United on Saturday night.
Everton revert to type
Everton started the Dyche era with a performance full of passion and competitive edge to stun Arsenal, but this was a reminder of why they face a serious relegation battle, and evidence that the display against the Gunners was very much the exception in this season of struggle.
None of the things Dyche expects from his teams was on show here. They were passive, slow and careless in possession - their major flaw once again exposed as they barely mounted a threat apart from Tarkowski's header that actually resulted in Liverpool breaking the deadlock.
The absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, injured once more after figuring for an hour against Arsenal, underscores the folly in not signing a replacement for Richarlison, an error in the summer compounded by the failure to correct it in January.
Much rests on the unreliable fitness of Calvert-Lewin, with Dyche having to rely on 22-year-old Ellis Simms, making only his second Premier League start. The youngster, understandably, struggled on his own up front with no service.
Everton now have a vital home game at home to managerless fellow strugglers Leeds United on Saturday and Dyche will want more of what they showed against Arsenal and less of what they produced at Anfield.

Just In: Election will not hold in 240 polling units – INEC.
INEC has said that voting would not hold in 240 polling units during the forthcoming general elections.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this during a meeting with political parties on Monday, February 13.
According to him, “Let me therefore start with the issue of polling units. You may recall that in 2021, with your support and that of other critical stakeholders, the Commission successfully expanded voter access to polling units 25 years after.
However, there are 240 polling units without registered voters spread across 28 states and the FCT. They range from one polling unit to 12 polling units in each state and the FCT, except Taraba and Imo states with 34 and 38 polling units respectively.
No new registrants chose the polling units and no voters indicated interest to transfer to them during the last Continuous Voter Registration, mainly for security reasons. This means that no elections will hold in these polling units.”

51 years old father dies during fight with his daughter bus driver who accused of molesting her.
The father of a 7-year-old pupil of Luyol Schools, Frederick Olorunfemi, died while he was confronting his daughter's school bus driver who she pointed as the person who molested her.
Vanguard reports that the pupil who will turn eight in May, had told her mother that the driver, having conveyed other students to their destinations on the 1st of February, 2023, drove her to his house to have canal knowledge of her.
Hearing this, Olurunfemi proceeded to the school with his daughter to speak to the driver, leading to an altercation between them. Consequently, the school bus driver pushed Mr Femi, who fell down and was rushed to a nearby hospital, Osuntuyi Medical Centre where he was confirmed dead.
Speaking to Vanguard, wife to the deceased Mrs. Mabel Olurunfemi, said
"Last Wednesday, my daughter came back from school and told me that after her school bus driver had dropped everyone at their houses, he took her to his house, told her to lift her school uniform and sit on his lap to kiss him, and was calling her his wife.
Since my husband does not always come home, I waited till his return before informing him all that she had told me.
When he heard, with anger, he picked up his phone and contacted the school director and explained to him that he would proceed to the police station to report everything, but he was calmed by the proprietor of the school and summoned him to school the next day, which was on the 7th, Tuesday.
Myself and my daughter followed him there. At the proprietor office, the bus driver who goes by the name of Jacob was also present. Having asked Sarah to narrate all that happened, the proprietor asked the driver why he brought back the school bus late on that fateful day to which he responded that he had to drop something after dropping the kids.
Out of anger, my husband slapped him, then he hit my husband on the neck and a fight started right there in the office. As everyone was trying to separate them, my husband was seriously angry holding the driver and this led to a push by the driver. My husband fell down and went unconscious. Before we could get to the hospital he passed on"

I’ve fulfilled all my campaign promises to Nigerians – President. Buhari.
President Muhammadu Buhari has said his administration had delivered on its campaign promises made to Nigerians in 2015.
According to him, “Let me remind us all that my campaign to become the president in 2015 was built on the promise to improve the security, strengthen the economy and combat corruption.
It is with immense gratitude to Almighty Allah that I make bold to say that we have delivered on the three promises.
With every sense of responsibility, I state boldly that the war against terrorism has been fought and won, as all the territories lost to these groups have been reclaimed.
Also Nigeria rose from the brackish waters of near-economic collapse to being acknowledged as the largest economy on the African continent.
Corruption held the country by the jugular before I assumed office in 2015. My administration has revamped the education sector through increased funding for human capital and infrastructural development.
