We’re heading for a magical winter trip to the far north of Norway: Alta. That’s 70 degrees north – and much farther north than where I grew up in Norway in Lillestrom, outside of Oslo. Up north in Alta, we will be chasing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), riding with dogsleds and reindeer, driving snowmobiles, staying in an ice hotel and more. And in this first video of our day 1 in Alta, we are embarking on a dogsled experience and unique stay at the amazing Holmen Husky Lodge (@holmenhuskylodge1921) - and maybe we'll see the Northern lights?! We have always wanted to try dogsledding. And, one of the most unique things you can witness in Alta is “Finnmarksløpet”, Europe’s longest dog sledding race, which is 1,200 KM long, and which is dubbed «the winter’s most beautiful adventure» by its participants. The race itself is not taking place during our visit, but we are dog sledging about 10km along the very trail that Finnmarksløpet follows each year. And, of course, we love dogs! Growing up in Norway, I was quickly introduced to most things related to winter, snow, ice and skiing - but never got exposed to curling. And so I've been eager ever since seeing it in the Winter Olympics in my childhood to try the activity. While Norway is a winter nation, curling is a niche sport that you don’t easily get exposed to, but since I got Polly with me in Norway for the first time, it’s time to finally try this! In case you're curious about how to play that, we'll quickly introduce it: Basically, there are a lot of variants, but the objective of the game is to slide weighted pucks (also called “weights” and “quoits”) so that they reach the highest scoring area on the opposite side of the table without falling off the end of the board into the gutter. Players take turns sliding the pucks trying to score points, or bump opposing pucks off the board, or protect their own pucks from bump-offs. When all weights have been shuffled, the player with the puck closest to the far edge of the table takes points for all pucks that are ahead of their opponent's furthest shot. Then you rinse and repeat! And some table shuffleboard vary in what substance they use to decrease friction, such as wax etc., but the most common ones in Norway are sprinkled with sand. So, overall it mimics curling to quite an extent, but still quite different. You simply count from 1 to 11. If you say 1, then the next person says 2, then the next 3 etc. You can also say two numbers in a row which turns the direction (e.g., if it was going clockwise, it would be the one sitting next to you counter-clockwise that would say the next number. Whenever you reach 11, a new rule is being added to the game (which can be absolutely anything). For example, you could say that from now on 10 and 1 swaps places, or that you're not allowed to say certain words, or that instead of 5 you have to say "monkey", or anything in between. It quickly gets very complicated, which means a lot of drinking!
