How the Internet Works for Developers - Pt 1 - Overview & Frontend
How does the internet work? Most people really don't have to know, but web developers have to know more and more as they grow in their career. These 2 videos cover how the internet works from a web development perspective.
At a high level, the internet is browsers making requests to servers and getting responses back. Each request contains headers that tell the server how to respond. The server responds with a response and a content-type, which tells the browser what to do with the response.
If the content-type is text/html, then the browser knows to treat the response like an html file. If the content-type is image/jpeg, then the browser knows it's a jpeg file.
This video covers how the browser parses the html document, and ways that you can improve the loading of your webpage with things like concatenating and minifying assets like javascript, css, etc.

WHY YOU NEED A BUILD SYSTEM LIKE GRUNT, GULP, BRUNCH FOR YOUR WEBSITE
Not using a build system/task runner? You're missing out. A build tool like Grunt, Gulp, Brunch, etc will drastically improve your local development workflow as well as your deployed website.
In this video, I'm going to cover:
- What a build system does for you
- Why you need one
- What a task runner can do for your local development workflow
- How to improve performance for your website in production
The bottom line is, a good build system will take your web development to a whole new level. It can feel like a lot of setup, but you only code it once...then use it for the life of your project. It's well worth the effort!

Mobile Web Design - Coding Workflow For Mobile Websites
In this video, I'm going to cover some ways to help your mobile development workflow as you design and develop responsive websites for mobile devices. Responsive websites are awesome, but they can be more tricky to code and to preview.
This is the mobile workflow that I prefer:
start your project using liveReload, then
- code in the browser
- code with device-specific profiling in the browser
- test with iPhone emulator
- test with actual devices on your network - accessing via your IP address

Javascript Closures Tutorial - What makes Javascript Weird...and Awesome Pt 3
What is a closure? In this Javascript Tutorial, we're going to be learning about closures - our 3rd most misunderstood concept of Javascript.
Hopefully, we're going to break it down enough to make it simple to understand for newbies and intermediate coders alike.
Javascript closures are really not that complex of an idea.
The textbook definition of a closure is a function that retains state and scope after it executes. Basically put, when the function's done, a callback might need to access the variables inside later...so Javascript remembers those variables. That remembering of the variables is called a closure.

What Makes Javascript Weird...and AWESOME - Pt 1
Javascript is so weird...and so AWESOME.
There are 5 root things that make it this way. If you're new, learning to grasp these 5 concepts will get you a LONG WAY in your JS programming.
Honestly, there are a LOT of intermediate programmers who don't understand these concepts. Many coders who know how to work around them don't really understand how and why it works, they just know do-this-and-it-works.

Javascript is Event-Driven - What makes Javascript Weird...and Awesome Pt 2
This changes EVERYTHING! The fact that Javascript is event-driven is the reason for closures, weird scoping/context, and the myriad of callbacks you see everywhere.
Programmers who are new to Javascript - especially Node.js - are often thrown for a loop by the event-driven nature of JS.
The bottom line is: Javascript isn't built for making a page, it's built for a user-interface. It listens for user interaction and responds accordingly. And when that response happens, it doesn't run any unnecessary code...just the code to respond to the user.

jQuery Tutorial #2 - Event Binding - jQuery Tutorial for Beginners
This second part of the jQuery Tutorial for beginners will show you how to do event binding with jQuery. Events happen whenever a user clicks, hovers, drags, types, or does pretty much anything to interact with an HTML element.
jQuery allows the web developer to easily write a program to listen to these javavscript events and modify the webpage in realtime. This is often called a dynamic website.
You can do all of this in plain javascript, but jQuery makes it incredibly easier.

GITHUB PULL REQUEST, Branching, Merging & Team Workflow
Github Pull Requests are an integral part of Team Workflow. This video covers how to make a new Github feature branch, merge that branch, handle merge conflicts, submit a pull request, discuss the github pull request, and ultimately merge that pull into the master branch of your github repository.
- Begin by doing a git pull to get the latest content on your master branch
- Run "git branch your-feature-name" to make a git branch
- Code in your changes, add and commit the files
- Pull the master branch again and merge it with your new branch
- Push the branch up to github and submit it as a pull request
- That pull request can now receive comments and code discussion, as well as accept new commits before being merged in with the master branch

Javascript Events Tutorial Part 2 - Javascript Tutorials for Beginning Web Development
In the last video, I covered Javascript Events for new Javascript Web Developers. Let's get a little more complex with those events by adding a loop and some different types of event listeners.
Here's the source code: http://codepen.io/anon/pen/doZbPQ?edi...
And here's all the key codes: https://css-tricks.com/snippets/javas...
A web developer often needs to add an event to multiple elements, but you don't want to repeat your code all over the place, so the best way to do it is to make a loop.
The good news is, since this loop just goes from i=0, i=1, i=2, etc, we can use one loop and add events to all 3 li's & inputs with it.

Javascript Selectors - Javascript Tutorial for Beginners With Examples
In this Javascript tutorial for beginners, we're going to be using Javascript selectors to access the DOM (document object model) and interact with our webpage in realtime. Selectors allow us to search for elements in the web page, get those html elements, and do things with them.
Selector methods are:
document.getElementsByTagName('div')
document.getElementsByClassName('done')
document.getElementById('my-id')
document.querySelector('#my-id')
document.querySelectorAll('.classname')
Once you have selected an html element, you can modify it:
document.getElementById('my-id').innerHTML = "new html"
document.getElementById('my-id').className = "newclass otherclass"
Hopefully you liked this javascript tutorial for beginners with examples (hopefully you like every web development tutorial I crank out)
As you can see, selectors are powerful in Javascript and even if you're a javascript beginner, you can make any and every change to your web page.

Javascript Events Tutorial - How Web Developers Respond to User Input
Simple Javascript Events Tutorial with code! Almost every Web Developer finds themselves needing to respond to user actions on a page by changing content or adjusting the page display somehow. The way you do that is by listening to Javascript events.
VIEW THE CODE:
- addition: http://codepen.io/anon/pen/vOeeqG?edi...
- pic link: http://codepen.io/anon/pen/vxYxKN?edi...
Popular Javascript Events Are:
- click
- mouseenter
- mouseleave
- mousedown
- mouseup
- mousemove
- keydown
- keyup
- blur
- focus
See list of all javascript events here: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/d...
In this lesson, we'll add event listeners to html elements. When the users click, focus, blur, press a key, or move their mouse, javascript will get notified and we can make the webpage change.
Listening to Javascript events is a bread and butter task for web development and web developers.

JS Tutorial For Beginners - #2 If Else & Comparison Operators
In this free Javascript tutorial, we'll cover if, else statements & comparison operators. This is a Free JS Course designed for beginners. These Javascript lessons cover the basics of Javascript and programming basics from the very beginning.
In the last lesson, we covered variables and several Javascript types. Before covering more types, we'll cover comparison operators and if, else statements.
Comparison Operators Covered in this Video:
(youtube doesn't allow me to do less-than and greater-than signs, which is really quite silly,
so I have to use LT and GT)
LT Less than
GT Greater than
LT= Less than or equal to
GT= Greater than or equal to
== equal to
!= not equal to
There are also "strict" equality types
=== same value and same type
!== not same value and same type
For example:
"2" == 2 will be true - even though they're different types, they're considered equal
"2" === 2 will be false because the second value is a number type, where the first is a string type
You should use the triple === whenever possible, as it's more specific.
