Two years out from the 2019 Rugby World Cup the Springboks were in tatters. They had suffered two 50-point hidings to New Zealand, including a record 57-0 annihilation as well as a 38-3 demolition job from Ireland, not to mention a first ever loss to Italy.
Enter Rassie Erasmus.
The new Springbok coach turned things around immediately and set about building a winning team with a winning culture. The rest is history. South Africa battled their way to the 2019 Rugby World Cup final before putting in their best performance in many a year to slay England 32-12 and win the Webb Ellis Cup for a third time.
In this video Peter looks back at a period that started in tumultuous fashion but ultimately ended in glorious triumph!

We Were Robbed! The Springboks At The 2011 Rugby World Cup

The Springboks were screwed out of the 2011 Rugby World Cup by a shocking refereeing performance by Bryce Lawrence in the quarter-final against Australia in Wellington.
Up to that moment South Africa had won a tight pool match against Wales before coming good against Fiji and Namibia and seeing off Samoa in their final pool game. Next up was a meeting with the Wallabies. The Boks started as favourites but there was nothing they could do against Lawrence’s dreadful effort that day.
Lawrence, a New Zealander, would subsequently quit after that match and become the head of referees in that country. The All Blacks would also play the winner of this quarter-final in the semis. Conspiracy? Maybe.
In this video Peter tries to objectively break down what happened at the 2011 Rugby World Cup from a South African perspective. You’ll also hear from JP Pietersen and Dick Muir, who were actually there, and get their thoughts on the events of that World Cup that could have gone the Springboks’ way … but we’ll never know.
