How Deadpool Solved the "Superhero Mask" Problem
When looking at the film Deadpool - it has a lot of pretty outlandish moments - From gruesome murders, made to be funny; to all the fun things you can do with a tiny hand - This film is just filled with messed up themes.
But one thing that you wouldn't expect to be too crazy, is what happened behind the scenes when it came to making this film's visual effects.
Because compared to typical superhero movies, which are often packed to the brim with VFX filled action and spectacle - Deadpool was much more about comedy, story and character; so you'd think it would just be a standard outing for the VFX artists who worked on it, just using their skills to enhance to the film and get the plot from point A to point B.
So when I decided to do a little research into how they made Deadpool's mask emote, I was shocked at the VFX rabbit hole i uncovered - a rabbit hole of creativity and ingenuity dug by some very unsung heroes, who are some of the only reasons - that it is was possible to pull of a film like Deadpool off on its low budget of 58 million Dollars.
So, put your brown pants on - as we explore the crazy world of Deadpools visual effects.

How Did District 9's VFX Look SO GOOD?
Despite its cripplingly low budget of only 30 million dollars, District 9 was the first film of its kind - Having mind blowing visual effects - which ranged from full CG characters to dynamic weapon effects.
However, with District 9 coming out in 2009 - it meant that the film always existed in the shadow of another major CGI film release that Year: 2009’s Avatar, by James Camereon.
With Avatar being a Goliath success; District 9’s incredible CG and VFX achievements were largely passed over and the film was never given the praise it deserved for changing the way Hollywood approaches its VFX production.
So, with the release of Avatar 2, I thought it was time that we cast a light back on District 9 and explored exactly why this film looks so good, how it did it on such a limited budget, and how it influenced the next decade of VFX.

How Avatar Changed Our Perceptions of CGI
Seriously, when was the last time you heard people complaining about “CGI ruining a movie”. Yea - okay the MCU has had some stumbles recently…
But its nothing like the hate and vitriol things like the Star Wars Prequels got back in the early 2000s - Despite all their technological achievements, the dodgy CGI did leave a bad taste in audiences' mouths for years to come - And People pretty quickly got sick of bad greenscreens or mediocre CGI replacing what would have once been a hand crafted practical set of model.
But then - In 2009… Avatar came out and was a massive blockbuster success. It was a huge milestone for CGI - with almost the entire film being completely computer generated -
And It’s groundbreaking VFX entranced audiences worldwide. - And since then VFX has just been consistent… amazing and it really just happened without us noticing and we all kinda just took it for granted…
So… why did this happen? What changes did Avatar cause to the filmmaking and VFX industry? And what does this mean for the future of VFX?

The Awesome VFX of Dredd (2013) - AKA: How to Do VFX on a Low Budget
2013's Dredd *only* had a budget of $45 million. Yea - that may sound like a lot… but compared to other films, it's really not.
For example the Judge Dredd film from over 10 years earlier had a budget of 90 million and your typical Marvel film has a budget of 100 million to 200 million or more dollars.
So it’s crazy that they pulled off a film with as much action, art and story on such a low budget - But how did they do it? And what can other filmmakers learn from Dredd? Well, As a VFX artist myself, I set off to answer these question and, after reading interviews and articles, and watching many behind the scenes videos I've narrowed it down to just a few key reasons, which turn Dredd from a low budget action flick - into the amazing film we were treated to.

The Podracing Scene is a VFX Masterpiece
In 1999 the first Star Wars film in 15 years was released, Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Despite the anticipation it was met with a lot of criticism over it's "Bad" CGI -- especially when the the original trilogy was so respected for its practical FX.
However, so many scenes from this film were actually groundbreaking and revolutionary, but ended up getting no credit for this - And no scene was more deserving of praise... than the Podracing Scene.
So what did the VFX artists do? How did they push the limits of CGI? and how did they change the next 20 years of VFX work?
To find out what happened I began researching into unique processes that made the Podrace possible.

The Star Wars Universe is SHRINKING.
The Star Wars Universe has been shrinking over the past few years. Now every show is set on the same few boring looking planets, like Tatooine.
Why is the happening? What creative decisions are happening behind the scenes the lead to the mundane planets?
As a VFX artist with several years VFX experience - I decided to apply my knowledge and research as to why this happens.
