In the simplest sense, socialism is an economic and political system based on public or collective ownership of the means of production. It emphasizes equality rather than achievement. With socialism, everything that people produce is in some sense a social product, and everyone who contributes to the production of a good is entitled to a share in it. Socialism fundamentally changes the structure of society, placing power and control over resources in the hands of individuals and communities instead of private interest groups or firms.
