We were hoping we weren't going to have to report this to you, but after 2 months we still haven't found our little buddy Tiki, an African Grey Parrot that has lived with me onboard since she was a baby. She got spooked in a lightning storm and made her way to shore, to become lost in a million trees making it impossible for us to locate her. We are still hopeful of finding her, and will launch one more blitz with her pamphlets and a reward, but in a month or so we will have to leave the island, which means Tiki may have become its newest permanent resident.. hopefully not, but we certainly appreciate your support and best wishes. In todays episode we take you on our sail to one of the Eastern Islands in the San Blas of Panama.. the main island is called Nargana, and it is connected to a smaller island called El Corazon de Jesus.. or 'The Heart of Jesus'.. the two islands are aptly located right at the mouth of El Rio del Diablo, or "The River of the Devil"... I think someone had a strange sense of humour when they named these 2 places, Lol. So what was I thinking when I installed an LG home-style mini-split air conditioning unit on a SAILBOAT? Well, I was thinking it was a good practical alternative to a marine air conditioning unit at a fraction of the cost! When we needed to bring the temperature down inside 'SOPHISTICATED LADY' during our engine transplant, it fit the bill perfectly and worked so well in fact, that we are still using it! There are many ways to improve your comfort level onboard a small sailboat, and I have been exploring many of them including air conditioning in order to show what is possible in a small living space while making it almost completely self-sustainable off-grid. The Tiny Home revolution is real and growing fast, and with it comes some of the newest and best technologies ever available to increase self-reliant electrical systems using solar generators, solar panels, wind turbines, and more to power all the devices we want to utilize.. so stay tuned because I have some very interesting content coming up for you this season! Today we see just how quickly things can go wrong, even in just a 30-knot squall if your anchor is not adequate for your boat, or not set properly. The boat instantly ended up on the reef behind him, and then his subsequent attempts to motor off of the reef resulted in his propellor exploding into 3 pieces and falling to the sea floor under the boat... not good! At the same time, we also get to see just how quickly the cruising community springs to action to help a sailor in trouble. The result was favorable, and everyone came out unscathed for the most part.. thanks to all who participated on that day! We finally got our weather window to sail to the San Blas Islands of Panama! After being holed up in Portobelo for several days waiting for the opposing wind and waves to drop, we get a day of calm wind to make it around the headland to Linton Bay where we stop to get a new brace made for our wind generator pole.. then with a favorable forecast for our departure, we set sail for the San Blas Islands and have a great sail on a beautiful sea.. aside from being on a collision course with a huge freighter, everything was perfect! Yes if I thought our first BALMAR 48V 5Kw alternator was a game changer for our life onboard Sophisticated Lady, You can only imagine how impressed I think we will be with the addition of our 2nd Balmar alternator, effectively doubling the charging capability from our new BETA Marine 85Hp diesel engine.. this upgrade transitions our engine from not only being a source of propulsion but also a primary backup source of power generation so we can run anything we want onboard, whenever we want.. including AIR CONDITIONING 24/7 while only requiring an average of 1-hour per day of run time on the engine.. that will be a GAME CHANGER in itself because most boats we are near that run air conditioning or a lot of electrical accessories have to run their generators 24/7 also. This will be part of the tests I'll be running on the full system now that is up and running, and report my findings back to you in a future video. Day 2 of our sail across Panama takes us straight through the field of freighters at anchor outside the Panama Canal as they wait for their passage through the Canal.. tons of tankers on all sides and our only option is to tack all the way through them, straight upwind in big wind and waves... should be fun!!
