Animals, especially our pets, aren't just cute and funny. They are sentient beings: able to feel, to experience affective states such as love, joy, longing and to experience feelings such as loneliness, anguish and the pain of losing a loved one. The Cambridge Declaration on Animal Consciousness goes further: "Converging evidence indicates that nonhuman animals have the neuroanatomical, neurochemical, and neurophysiological substrates of states of consciousness along with the ability to exhibit intentional behaviors."
