Field Sounds With Lucas

Take a 20 minute break from work or study. Ambient ocean waves at night.

I was standing near the Cape Fear River (downtown Wilmington, NC) and heard construction equipment from a few streets away. The sounds were unusual for construction equipment. I noticed the sounds were bouncing around with a lot of vibrations. I walked up to the intersection of North Front Street and Grace Street (34.238840395593144, -77.9491239831353) and saw the entire intersection was closed for infrastructure and road paving. I caught the latter as the hot asphalt was being rolled. From dump trucks to rollers to tampers and the occasional talking by the workers, I appreciated the seriousness of the project considering where it was. I am appreciative of the City Engineer that shared some of the work progress. I spent about 2 hours in a 2 block radius capturing several perspectives. My favorite sounds have to be the idle dump truck waiting to unload and a worker sweeping loose asphalt after the machines had advanced. I believe cities like Wilmington should have sound libraries of their own to archive AND to share with their residents. Pictures are great, but sounds are better. It provides more context on what’s happening (in my opinion). I was standing next to a pond with Koi Fish. There were about 20 fish congregating in a single area waiting to be fed. I have the BBG wind cover on the AT8022XY mic and they thought I was about to feed them. The bubbling sounds of the fish taking in water was really cool. Quiet street after a nice rain. The drain from the roof runs down the building and collects along a makeshift gully to the street. Here are the sounds. You’ll hear a few cars drive by and mainly the water collecting in the drain area slowly as the leaves are completely covering the grate. Full album at

I recorded a few workers pressure washing Grady White center console boats - Freedom 255 (25’), Canyon 326 (32’) and Fisherman 257 (25’) models at a local boatyard. The boats were placed in the bay and periodically moved to the service area. Ambient noise throughout including forklift, birds, workers talking and vehicles driving by. Sounds of industrial fans connected to a large greenhouse. About 4 different fans in total. Some of the fans are deeper, more clunky and just basically worn out. Difficult to record and there was a significant amount of hot air blowing out of the entire fan - all directions. I specifically noticed how different each of the sounds are outside of the obvious monster sound of the air being pushed out. It was a really hot late summer day in the south. I walked up on 20-30 kids at a local park with water fountains and other ‘contraptions’. They were having so much fun and thought it was good to record the sound from a distance. It’s about 85 degrees F and a sticky afternoon. Long Leaf Park in Wilmington NC. These kids don’t care about the world right now. I really appreciate all the parents that walked by and were supportive. Hope you enjoy the sounds of our future. I was standing outside and could smell the moisture in the air. Saw the clouds starting to form. Rain was definitely coming. I was on my way somewhere and made a decision to set up my gear in the car while parked. I didn’t want to record in the middle of the rain - I really wanted the build up. Waited about 20 minutes and the rain came in spurts. Then all at once. I liked this library for the rain but more than that, I enjoyed the slow moving escalation to a middle area of constant deluge. The last couple of tracks show the loudest rain mixed with thunder and what feels like hail (no hail though). The car was really plush so no annoying noises from the rain hitting the roof. I sat still and really listened. THEN, the sun came out and temperature went from 88 degrees F at the start to 72 degrees F. Amazing sounds and hope you like. In this album, I was able to stand on a busy corner in Wilmington and record traffic in all directions during lunch hour. Recording is in stereo on all four points. You’ll hear cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, tow trucks and other types of vehicles. The traffic and pattern flows at one of the busiest intersections in Wilmington and was actually very calming to listen to. Not to watch. Sounds of a water taxi company on the Cape Fear River getting ready to leave the boat slip. Audio of engine starting, warming up and releasing the ties. The boat maneuvers around to push off from the dock. In one of the tracks, you can hear the boat squeeze the rubber blocks before easing out. The boat idles after warming up and you can hear the water sloshing between the boat and the dock. The last track is my favorite where you can hear the crew member saying it's all clear and the horn as they leave.

A quick morning rain while standing under a pine tree. It’s 82 degrees F warm and humid. You’ll hear a chorus of crickets. Rain stopped right after recording. The smells are amazing after the rain. Sounds of the work being done on the magistrate courthouse building along Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington, NC. You can hear a stuck JLG boom lift trying to descend, workers using grinders on the exterior of the building and a lot of ambient sounds. All the windows are boarded up and I can’t imagine the magnitude of the work progressing inside. All the sounds in this album are from the outside. Workers are all subcontractors and talk/chat throughout some of the tracks. It’s a great indication of the scale of work and how much noise they are making. The uploaded files are minimally enhanced. Library of recorded sounds at a park where children are playing during recess. They have just finished their lunch and 3 classes are ready to start playing at the public park. I enjoyed listening to all the ambient sounds along with close up interactions. Several tracks utilize binaural headphones in addition to the stereo recorder. Ten recordings at a small airport (ILM) and the ambient elements of a large space. Although the traffic was minimal, I was surprised how much noise actually exists. Especially when you close your eyes. You almost get caught up with the families on their hurried stress. So many rich sounds. Hope you enjoy. Three recordings where I was able to sit in deep infield and record some amazing sounds. The sounds I was interested in were the aluminum bat, glove noise after catching the ball, players running, players sliding, the coach giving instruction and the surprise sound was a player moving the clay from the top of the bag on second base.
