What made you decide that you wanted to be an Imago therapist and not a regular marriage counselor? David Weber: Well, in my early days of my career, I did regular marriage counseling, and it was essentially being a referee in a boxing ring, and it didn't really seem like it went anywhere. Could I reach détente with the couple? Yes. Would it evolve beyond that? Not really. I got the feeling that they would have to come in more for 'tune-ups' or even more than that, especially if a bigger issue came up. I found that when I learned about Imago, first off, it made a lot of sense to me, and secondly, once I was able to put it into practice after I completed my training a number of years ago, I found that the couples responded better, at least with empathy and compassion, because they are trying to view their partner through that lens now. Then, I don't have to play referee as much. The best argument has no winner, and nobody gets blamed. For the best argument is a dialogue, an intentional dialogue, heated perhaps, needled sometimes with anger no doubt, difficult always, between two people whose positions on a given issue are passionately different. That two people have different opinions about the same thing, is the measure of their uniqueness. That they express their differences, is a measure of their courage. That they are willing to listen to someone else’s position, is a measure of their maturity. And that they are willing to arrive at a solution, is a measure of the strength of their relationship. An argument is a forum for a passionate dialogue, not a battleground, or the occasion for a firing squad. The winner of the truly successful argument is never an individual, but the relationship itself. So much said in a simple amount of prose. When you think about it, it opens up the question of, what is the intentional dialogue in Imago? And how wonderful a tool to be able to use to talk things out, to understand that two opinions can exist in the same space and both are right. So, one of the things that I am finding ‘post-covid’ now that things are opening up more is people coming in individually, not as a couple, to talk about the disillusionment of their relationship and how Covid has put their relationship over the top. The first thing I say to them is, I need you to check in with yourself, because as much as I do understand that Covid has put your relationship over the top, I’m going to invite you to consider that these issues were all there before covid. Being locked in with your significant other / wife / husband / girlfriend / boyfriend / partner is going to bring out the ugly stuff because there is no exit. What's interesting about Imago relationship therapy, is once you have an understanding... Once you read that book, I think you don't really need to have a partner to understand the dynamics of what Harville & Helen are talking about in it. Once you open yourself up to this knowledge base, you can't shove it all back in. Everything is relational. How are you feeding into it? How are you recreating your childhood dynamics? I often get the question if I ever 'agree' with my clients... So, here's my answer to that: I will always agree with blatant injustice. But, I feel that if I agree completely, I'm letting the person off the hook of looking at what their duplicity is. What they are doing to participate in the relationship / situation that they are in. If I just agree, then how am I helping them to see and to prevent the next 'set up' because I always say to people that things come in different disguises. So if I just agree with you saying he / she is a jackass, etc. and then you get into a new relationship with someone else and you're doing the same things again. How is that helping you? I'm going to be more in the realm of saying, yeah, that wasn't such a great thing that he / she did to you, but what did you to participate? What patterns are you following / stuck in? What kinds of people are you choosing to surround yourself with to find yourself still getting into these situations? Another question that's often asked to me when people are calling me up to sort of screen me to see if I’m the right fit is they’ll ask me, how I work with their depression / anxiety? I try to approach it as a relational model. I do Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well. Most people that are coming to me individually, they are coming in because from a relational perspective, they feel immobilized. They are in a relationship. They want to blame their parents, spouse, children, boss, etc.. whoever it is. I create a construct to look at how are YOU feeding into the problem? How are you making yourself the victim vs. the victor? We try to focus on being curious again and filled with wonder about how do I participate in this relational dance as opposed to looking to blame, shame, or throw it off on someone else. Let’s face it: we all want to completely control our outcomes in everything. I think if we can spend less time thinking about what other people may be thinking, and spend more time thinking about what WE can do to change or shift the outcome, we’ll usually find a favorable outcome. If there isn’t a favorable outcome, then you have the opportunity to look at the situation and say, ok so, now what do I do with the situation now that this person is not accepting the boundaries that I’ve expressed to them? Empathy is like looking at a sunset. Imagine standing next to your partner on a dock looking at a sunset. Everyone sees colors differently. What colors are you seeing? What colors does your partner see? Maybe you do this in real life to show how differently we all see and what we all focus on. This is a glimpse into empathy. It's all about perception. Maybe you focus on the blues and your partner is seeing orange. Empathy is about letting go of our vision and truly trying to see someone else's. Therapy for Better Mental Health So, somebody said to me, "ugh, 2020.. it sucked.." Yeah, it did. But I'll tell you something really great that came out of 2020. More people now, than ever before, are finally looking at mental health / therapy as a viable, positive option to feeling better and making themselves better. Is alcoholism and substance abuse up? Of course. There's no question. My phone has been ringing off the hook. I'm happy about that on some level because whatever existed before where people were going through life and just essentially existing, and not addressing issues. Now, people have to look at things. Whenever I start an Imago session with a couple, they often ask why we do a centering exercise before starting. Part of why I believe in doing a centering exercises, is first of all, to calm oneself. It also sets up an openness to listen. I have a therapy dog in this practice and I now like to use the metaphor of trying to see the world through a puppy's eyes. Take that puppy-kind-of-attitude and use that when looking at your partner's issues. Be curious at what they're saying, opposed to getting defensive, annoyed and/or angry. The experts say that we are all suffering from anxiety right now and I believe them. It may manifest itself in different ways for different people, but we all feel it. Sometimes, things are so obvious that we think we shouldn’t even have to say it, but during times of great stress, we do need it said. We need it to be said over and over. So here is what you (and I) need to do: 1. Go to bed – Don’t stay up all night. Turn the devices off and get as much sleep as possible. 2. Exercise – I know the gym is closed, but there are plenty of ways to exercise at home or outside. Just try going up and down the stairs 10 times in a row at the very least. 3. Eat well – Fight the urge to eat all the time. Eat things that are good for you. Try to eat on a normal schedule. This will help you sleep better too. 4. Get some solitude – You need to get some alone time with your thoughts if you are around a group constantly. You need to just take a couple of deep breaths and try to relax. 5. Connect with friends – We are all social creatures. Loneliness is an epidemic in our culture today. Reach out to your friends and family. Spend some time on the phone or Facetime or Skype with them. Even after doing all these things, you may still feel out of sorts. It's ok, we're all in this together. I'm here to help if you need someone to listen. I found something that is very touching that I'd thought I would share with you in order to help you get through today. It's a prayer for gratitude. Also, after I read this, I'm going to share ways to keep yourself from getting less anxious. If you find that you are getting very anxious during these times, the best thing for you to do is provide some structure to your day. As I've said to a few patients that I've seen lately virtually, that getting out of the bed in the morning and putting the TV on right away is not a good thing to do. It's really important to get up, maybe do a meditation, maybe pray for gratitude, make a gratitude journal for the things you are grateful for this time when you are at home. Then start your day after writing in a gratitude journal to taking a walk outside or some kind of exercise. But really, limit your TV intake to 15-20 minutes of news a day. Save entertainment for later in the day. Try to find little projects to do because we're strapped in for the long haul right now, and it's going to get worse before it gets better. Just know that you are strong and you can do this. Really being seen. We feel loved when we feel seen, deeply perceived, and validated. When another human being responds to us, we feel understood. Being able to be seen requires being vulnerable. It means that we reveal ourselves or that we put ourselves in such close proximity to another human being that he/she can really see us. Some of us are afraid of being seen. We don’t want our secrets to show. We’re afraid that having disclosed the inner reaches of ourselves, we won’t feel safe or be loved. Others of us are afraid of not being seen – remaining forever invisible and unacknowledged. Today, reveal something to the person you love, which in the past you have kept hidden. Then allow yourself to see something in them which previously was overlooked or ignored. Intimacy grows when we are seeing, when we allow ourselves to truly behold one another.
