La Iglesia Católica conmemora a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe El 12 de diciembre se originó una devoción a partir de la historia de la aparición de María a un indígena azteca, Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, en 1531, en el cerro Tepeyac.
La fecha se convirtió en conmemoración litúrgica en 1754, por decisión del Papa Benedicto XIV.
Pío X la proclamó patrona de América Latina en 1910.
Con el tiempo, Guadalupe se ha convertido en uno de los símbolos más ligados a la cultura mexicana.
Hoy es la devoción mariana más importante de América y su santuario en la Ciudad de México es el santuario mariano más visitado del mundo.
Allí se venera su imagen, que los devotos creen haber formado de manera milagrosa sobre la tilma el manto de Juan Diego.
El indígena fue canonizado en 2002 por Juan Pablo II.
