In the fight for social justice “Our greatest weapons are our voices and our passion - Let us wield these tools with courage and conviction, for the sake of our present and for the promise of our future.” In this opening episode of Coup Save America’s third season, host, Sean St. Heart, is out sick with covid. His producer, Mckenzie, also has covid, but she valiantly (and awkwardly) manages to record an introduction to the show, as she talks about why we felt it important to air our first episode of 2024 on the United Nations’ World Day of Social Justice. Together, they have betrayed the rights and possibilities of the citizens of South Central Los Angeles. The work that Chief Cronin did in his city was a first of its kind attempt in the U.S. to add the new concepts of systems thinking and community policing to solve the urgent problems of both the high murder rate and high school dropout rate in his city. With his assembled brilliant task force of like-minded thinkers, he achieved extraordinary results. Fortified by his university education, his professors, and an indigenous Latina named Sayra Pinto, the work engendered a ripple effect through his city and then, across the globe.

Nearly one in five women, a total of over 23 million, have experienced sexual assault in their lifetime. Tragically, over a third of all women who were raped as minors are also later raped as adults. Survivors of rape are thirteen times more likely to attempt suicide than those who have not been victims of crime. These statistics reflect a crisis that, while often acknowledged, has existed thus far without any meaningful challenge. According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, out of ever 1000 rapes, only 334 are reported to the police, and only 63 of those reported rapes result in an arrest, of which only 13 cases are referred to prosecutors, and even then, only 7 cases lead to a felony conviction. Though rape is a serious crime in itself, rape culture is a far greater concern. Has the #MeToo movement done enough to challenge this culture? What further steps can we take to change societal biases? On today's episode of Coup Save America, Sean will speak with special guest Tara Reade about the difficulties women face when they speak out about sexual assult in today's culture.

Sophia also tells us about her extensive activism work to improve healthcare in Texas and her nonprofit organization, Trans Power San Antonio. In addition, Sean interviews Jesse A. In the aftermath of a bevy of rulings by the Supreme Court of the United States that mark a decisive victory for the religious right, are these fears of a creeping theocracy valid concerns? Sean St. Heart is joined by Barry Lynn, former legislative director for the American Civil Liberties Union and Executive Director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State to discuss the limits of religious freedom.

Kelsey talks to Sean about her work fighting for reproductive rights in Washington DC and about publishing a heartbreaking memoir describing the pain of losing her much-wanted daughter when abortion was the only reasonable choice for both mother and child. At the end of the program, Kelsey is joined by Carolanne Miller, a special guest who has suffered the emotional backlash of an abortion she had as a teenager over fifty years ago. As Carolanne shares her story, Kelsey demonstrates the counseling services offered by the non-profit organization that she founded to assist women in recovering from the various traumas brought on by the experience of abortion.
