"There were two conferences on this, in 1986 and 2000, organized by Gaddafi. Everybody was interested, most countries in Africa were keen." Gaddafi did not give up. In the months leading up to the military intervention, he called on African and Muslim nations to join together to create this new currency that would rival the dollar and euro. They would sell oil and other resources around the world only for gold dinars. It is an idea that would shift the economic balance of the world. A country's wealth would depend on how much gold it had and not how many dollars it traded. And Libya has 144 tons of gold. The UK, for example, has twice as much, but ten times the population. "If Gaddafi had an intent to try to re-price his oil or whatever else the country was selling on the global market and accept something else as a currency or maybe launch a gold dinar currency, any move such as that would certainly not be welcomed by the power elite today, who are responsible for controlling the world's central banks," says Anthony Wile, founder and chief editor of the Daily Bell. "So yes, that would certainly be something that would cause his immediate dismissal and the need for other reasons to be brought forward from moving him from power." And it has happened before. In 2000, Saddam Hussein announced Iraqi oil would be traded in euros, not dollars. Some say sanctions and an invasion followed because the Americans were desperate to prevent OPEC from transferring oil trading in all its member countries to the euro. A gold dinar would have had serious consequences for the world financial system, but may also have empowered the people of Africa, something black activists say the US wants to avoid at all costs. "The US have denied self-determination to Africans inside the US, so we are not surprised by anything the US would do to hinder the self-determination of Africans on the continent," says Cynthia Ann McKinney, a former US Congresswoman. The UK's gold is kept in a secure vault somewhere in the depths of the Bank of England. As in most developed countries, there is not enough to go around. Pipelines zur Wasserversorgung der libyschen Städte und landwirtschaftlicher Nutzflächen. Anfang der 1960er Jahre wurde in Libyen erstmals Erdöl gefunden, die Ausbeutung der Vorkommen begann. Damit verbunden war die intensive Suche neuer Lagerstätten. Die Erkundung wurde bis tief in die Sahara ausgedehnt. Sozusagen als Nebenresultat dieser Explorationstätigkeit stießen die Bohrtrupps damals auf reiche Süßwasservorkommen, deren Umfang für aride Zonen, wie sie der größte Teil Libyens darstellt, die Ausbeutung geradezu unabdingbar erscheinen lassen. Mit diesen Wasserreserven nahmen Pläne Gestalt an, dass Libyen eines Tages die Versorgung seiner Bevölkerung mit landwirtschaftlichen Produkten aus eigenem Aufkommen sichern kann und darüber hinaus diese Erzeugnisse exportiert. Ursprüngliche Vorstellungen zur Errichtung riesiger Farmen in der Wüste nahe der Brunnen ließen sich nicht verwirklichen. Die Alternative war die Fortleitung des Wassers aus den Brunnenfeldern in die Küstenregionen, um die dort vorhandene Landwirtschaft zu vervielfachen. Die zu transportierenden Wassermengen bewegen sich nach Abschluss der Arbeiten in Größenordnungen von über 2 Mio. Kubikmeter pro Tag, damit erscheint die Bezeichnung des Leitungssystems als größten von Menschenhand geschaffenen Fluss als gerechtfertigt. Dieses Projekt wird von dem libyschen Revolutionsführer Muammar el Gaddafi auch als 8. Wunderwerk der Welt bezeichnet und gilt bis heute als die größte Baustelle der Welt. Das große Projekt "Fluss durch Menschenhand" startete im Januar 1984 nach anderen Berichten zufolge ab September 1984. Es transportiert die Wassermassen von Kufra und den Sareer Reservoirs unterirdisch zu den Küstengebieten Bengasi, Sirte und Tripolis. Das Wasser stammt aus riesigen unterirdischen Seen, die sich als Folge der abtauenden Gletscher nach der letzten Eiszeit gebildet haben. Das kostbare Süßwasser kommt aus 2.000 m Tiefe und ist 20.000 bis 30.000 Jahre alt. Die Versorgung der Bevölkerungszentren geschieht über ein riesiges Netzwerk von Pipelines, das nach Beendigung der Arbeiten ca. 3.380 km umfassen wird. Zwei spezielle Rohrfabriken wurden in Brega und der Sarir Region gebaut, um sicherzustellen, dass immer genügend Leitungsmaterial für das Projekt vorhanden ist. Diese Rohrstücke wiegen zwischen 73 und 78 Tonnen und haben einen Durchmesser von 4 m und sind jeweils 7,25 m lang. Dieses Jahrhundertprojekt beinhaltet drei Phasen: In der ersten Phase werden Pipelines von Tazerbon und Sarir im Süden nach Adjedabia im Norden verlegt. In der zweiten Phase werden 2 Millionen Kubikmeter Wasser täglich von den Brunnen der Fezzan - Region zuzüglich weiterer 500.000 Kubikmeter aus den Hasawna-Bergen transportiert. In der dritten Phase werden noch einmal 1,68 Millionen Kubikmeter zu den ersten zwei Phasen dazukommen. Für das große Projekt mussten 960 Brunnen mit einer Tiefe von 450 bis 650 Meter gebohrt werden. Dieses Netz von Brunnen bedeckt eine Fläche von 8000 qkm. Jedes Rohrsegment ist mit 18 km carbonisiertem Metalldraht umsponnen. Das bedeutet allein für die erste Phase wurde eine Menge Draht verbraucht, mit der man den Globus 230-mal einwickeln könnte. Die Wasserreserven im Kufrabecken entsprechen der Wassermenge, die in 220 Jahren den Nil herunter fließen. Nach Fertigstellung des Projekts werden jeden Tag Wassermassen transportiert, die der Hälfte des weltweit geförderten Erdöls entsprechen. Mit den Sand und den Steinen, die für die Produktion der Rohrleitungen benötigt werden, hätte man 16-mal die ägyptische Pyramide von Gizeh bauen können. Der verbrauchte Zement hätte für eine Autobahn von Tripolis bis Bombay gereicht. Experten sagen voraus, dass die libysche Bevölkerung bei einen täglichem Wasserverbrauch von 6 Millionen Kubikmetern pro Tag für über 50 Jahre versorgt sein wird.
