A Weak Attempt to Defend Holidays (Happy Thanksgiving!)
Critical thinkers and theorists that you all are, it's likely many of you scoff at holidays. "Oh, Thanksgiving? Don't you mean Native Genocide day?" or, "Oh, wow, an excuse to be even more of a gluttonous American than usual!? Amazing." Then of course there are those of you who think having a good time with your family while bad stuff is happening in the world makes you a fascist or whatever (please remove yourself from this list by replying "Remove").
Joking aside, I get it. I used to say things like, "Why do we limit our gratitude or gift giving to isolated and arbitrary days in the year?" In the last few years I have become much more of a realist on matters such as tradition or ritual....

Daniel Tutt on Anti-Work and Gorz's Farewell to the Working Class (Dave and Nance play defense!)
Daniel Tutt caught a lot of heat for this tweet: https://twitter.com/DanielTutt/status/1709675340681896247
We thought the responses were not fair, but also, while we agree with Tutt's general points about the New Left, he's not doing Gorz himself justice. So we have a conversation about it! Join us.
Daniel Tutt, Ph.D., is a philosopher and socialist. His writing and research concerns psychoanalysis, politics and new directions in Marxist and Nietzschean thought. He has taught philosophy at George Washington University, the Washington, DC jail and Marymount University. Tutt is host of Emancipations Podcast and he founded Study Groups on Psychoanalysis and Politics, an extra-academic community that offers affordable seminars and study groups for students and the wider public. He is currently writing a book on the legacy of left-Nietzschean thought and socialism called How to Read Like a Parasite: What the Left Needs to Know About Nietzsche which will be published in February 2024 by Repeater Books. His first book is Psychoanalysis and the Politics of the Family and is published with the Palgrave Lacan Series and came out in 2022.
David McKerracher (M.A. in critical theory and B.A. in philosophy) is the sole founder and organizer of Theory Underground, an independent philosophy lecture course platform, publishing house, and social media APP. He is the author of Waypoint and TIMENERGY: Why You Have No Time or Energy, and one of the co-editors of Underground Theory. Born in the city but raised on a homestead in the woods, McKerracher has always been an outsider looking in, trying to understand himself and the world. Loves cats, coffee, and timenergy! At Theory Underground, McKerracher teaches Heidegger's Being and Time, Marx's Das Kapital, and leads a cohort of researchers in Critical Media Theory.
Bryce Nance is one of the most involved students at Theory Underground, a huge supporter, and the number 1 roadie at TU. He likes to skateboard, listen to books, and study philosophy. He is a malcontent who believes study as a way of life helps him become less sucky, which is why he joins Dave for so many long-form exegetical readings. Check out his piece in Underground Theory!

About the Publications:
TIMENERGY*: Why You Have No Time or Energy: We normally don’t have any time, but when we finally do, we lack energy. On those rare occasions when we have energy outside of work, it is restless and difficult to harness towards meaningful goals. Starting from the realization that meaningful time is worthless without energy, the concept of “timenergy” points to something we all lack: large energy-infused blocks of repeatable time throughout the week. TIMENERGY: Why You Have No Time or Energy is a critique of our job-centric society and the schooling system that assumes we are nothing more than workers, professionals, or managers. This book challenges all political representatives, professors, and media figures to think deeper about the daily lives and needs of working people.
Underground Theory: A collection of timely and cutting edge essays by working class nobodies who are just trying to think, plus some big-named renegade academics who see the value in McKerracher’s timenergy theory, Mikey (of The Dangerous Maybe blog)’s working class education work, or the general idea of radical grass roots experiments that have institutional support.
THEORY UNDERGROUND IS A critical media theory and alternative adult education experiment founded, organized, and run by David McKerracher. So what is TU? Theory Underground is a lecture course-centered social media and publishing site/APP with ongoing lecture courses, seminars, and research cohorts.

Thinking vs. action, theory vs. praxis, and critique vs. organizing... though none of these are mutually exclusive, people (especially leftists) tend to favor the latter over the former, in almost every case. The Theory Underground crew is going to argue that organizing, direct action, and "praxis" are all a waste of time without theory, critique, and thinking. There should be a dialectical relationship between both sides. These introductory talks are meant to spark thinking.
About the speakers:
David McKerracher (M.A. in critical theory and B.A. in philosophy) is the sole founder and organizer of Theory Underground, an independent philosophy lecture course platform, publishing house, and social media APP. He is the author of Waypoint and TIMENERGY: Why You Have No Time or Energy, and one of the co-editors of Underground Theory. Born in the city but raised on a homestead in the woods, McKerracher has always been an outsider looking in, trying to understand himself and the world. Loves cats, coffee, and timenergy!
Ann Snelgrove-McKerracher received a BS in Social Science (emphasis in sociology and political philosophy) from Boise State University in 2021 where she was part of a research cohort that studied the neoliberalization of higher education. At Theory Underground, she has helped develop and teach two courses: The Idea of the University and Digital Literacy and CMT (Critical Media Theory). When not doing theory or social science related research and writing, Ann can be found traveling the world with Dave, learning Spanish, cooking and baking, or participating in local theater.
Bryce Nance - A random skateboarder we picked up along the way. Just kidding! Nance is one of the most involved students at Theory Underground, a huge supporter, and our number 1 roadie. He likes to skateboard, listen to books, and study philosophy. He is a malcontent who believes study as a way of life helps him become less sucky.

Lacanian Psychoanalysis and Hypostition in Portland - Guests: Michael Downs and Doug Lain
Going live from Portland to talk about some of our favorite concepts from psychoanalysis and the CCRU (Cybernetic Research Unit: Mark Fisher, Sadie Plant, Nick Land, et al.) can teach us about problems in academia and activism today, including the unveiling of a new concept, a TU special: hypostition!
Besides presentations from myself (Dave), Ann, and Nance, we will also be getting a special presentation from Michael Downs (Mikey!). We will also be joined, for the panel, by none other than Douglas Lain of Sublation Media (+ past projects i.e. Diet Soap, Zer0 Squared, Zer0 Books, etc.).

What the Left does not understand about workers - Blue Collar vs. PMC enjoyment - on Oliver Anthony
This is the Kansas City event from the Theory Undergroud 2023 Book and Distributed Conference TOUR event at Prosperos Book Store! Michael Downs presents on his piece in Underground Theory "Wage Labor and Jouissance: Why the Left Needs Žižek to Understand Workers" which is followed by presentations from the TU tour crew: Dave presents on Blue Collar vs. PMC Jouissance, critiquing the Left's reactions to Oliver Anthony (using Slavoj Žižek and Zac and Gavin from The Vanguard as cases in point). Nance presents on PMC enjoyment and why WORKERISM is bullshit. Finally, Ann presents on The Gifted and Talented TRAP, which is to say, how upwardly mobile and gifted kids in the schooling system have their lives ruined in an attempt to reproduce the class society.
About the keynote speaker:
Michael Downs is an independent researcher and author of the philosophy and critical theory blog The Dangerous Maybe. On his blog, he teaches, explores and expands on the ideas of Slavoj Žižek, Jacques Lacan, Jean Baudrillard, Gilles Deleuze, and many other philosophers, in ways that are accessible to a broad audience. Michael has guest lectured on Søren Kierkegaard at Truman State University and on Jean Baudrillard at Boise State University. He also has tutored philosophy students at Longview Community College as well as online. Michael's essay 'Differentia Ex Nihilo: The Problem of Difference in Kant’s Critical Philosophy' has been published in the online philosophy journal Triple Ampersand. He has earned a graduate certificate from The New Centre for Research and Practice and was the recipient of the Outstanding Graduate Essay at the 2018 International Žižek Conference in Athens, Georgia. Michael is currently studying with Todd McGowan with a special focus on the work of Slavoj Žižek.

Marxism, Dialectics, and Critique | Chris Cutrone and Platypus meet TU
Chris Cutrone and Platypus Affiliated Society meet Theory Underground on its book tour of the United States.
Do you hate politics but love thinking? Or do you love thinking about how modern politics sucks? Either way, this event is for you. Theory Underground and Platypus Affiliated Society are joining forces to think about our current situation and how to theorize a way out. Even if you are new to politics or philosophy, you will get a lot from this event that deals with issues related to Marxism, class, the "death of the Left" and the future.
Author bios:
Chris Cutrone is the last Marxist. He is the original lead organizer and chief pedagogue of the Platypus Affiliated Society. He teaches Critical Theory at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Institute for Clinical Social Work and completed his PhD on Adorno's Marxism at the University of Chicago, where he taught for many years in the Social Sciences Core Curriculum.
Ann Snelgrove-McKerracher received a BS in Social Science (emphasis in sociology and political philosophy) from Boise State University in 2021 where she was part of a research cohort that studied the neoliberalization of higher education. She also helped develop and teach a course on the related topic, “Is College Worth It?” The question that has driven all of Ann’s research, as well as her past political involvement, has always been “What is the Good Life?” At Theory Underground, she has helped develop and teach two courses: The Idea of the University and Digital Literacy and CMT (Critical Media Theory). When not doing theory or social science related research and writing, Ann can be found traveling the world with Dave, learning Spanish, cooking and baking, or participating in local theater.
