English Shepherd Tracker Training
Since at least as early as the nineteenth century, hunters in Appalachia, the Ohio River Valley, and the South were using Old-fashioned black and tan English shepherds to tree small game, bay larger game, track wounded game, and catch wild boar hogs. As life in America has urbanized and some would say become emasculated, our dogs have been used less and less for hunting. Fortunately, some still know the old ways and select Old-fashioned black and tans to pursue traditional occupations. The female black and tan in this video is sired by my stud male Sallee’s Rustie Jr. She is placed with a professional hunter who has trained her from an early age to track wounded game. Now at almost a year old, she is exhibiting the enthusiasm to become a tracker. She will continue to accompany older mentor dogs on the hunt this year and be given a chance to show her mettle.

Don't Jump on Sheba's Boy
This little black and tan female's name is Sheba. Sheba doesn't care for that clear sable to be jumping up on her boy, but she's still too small to do much about it. But Sheba's ma lives on my ranch, and I can say with confidence that the sable is going to have his hands full in a few more month. If all turns out well, Sheba will be bred to Bishop's Ace, and in doing so will continue the IESR black and tan sire line (at risk) of Show's Lobo.

A History of the Old-fashioned Black and Tan English Shepherd
Historically, the Old-fashioned Black and Tan English Shepherd dog was essential to the lives of many rural Tennesseans. But the utility of these all-purpose working dogs spread beyond the borders of Tennessee. In the Southeast, Black and Tan English Shepherds were well-known to farmers in Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. To the west, these gritty dogs were especially useful to cattle ranchers in Texas. To the north, Black and Tan English Shepherd dogs earned a living on farmsteads throughout the Ohio river valley. And further east, these dogs were well-known to rural citizens of the Mid-Atlantic region. But the history and use of these farm dogs is particularly well-documented in Tennessee.
