T. P. Wong's existential theory of optimism. In contrast to traditional concepts of hope and optimism, tragic optimism is rooted in the heroic and courageous stance of affirming meaning, faith and hope in spite of adversities, traumatic experiences and bleak reality. Results on factorial and concurrent validity will be presented. The implications of tragic optimism for counselling and therapy will be discussed. Realistic Optimism Meets Motivated Self-Deception: Focus on Meaning and Knowledge 2 p.m. – 3:50 p.m. Symposium on Meaning & Optimism Chair - Zander Ponzo, Ph.D., University of Vermont Annahita Varahrami, B.Sc., Young Adult Volunteer Program, Presbyterian Church The Relationships Between Meaning, Purpose in Life, Hope, and Psychosocial Development Existential psychology is concerned with enhancing psychological well-being through the awareness of meaning and purpose in life. Similarly, counseling theories based on Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development promote mental health and successful growth and development. This study investigated the relationships between meaning, purpose in life, hope, and psychosocial development. Subjects were asked to complete measures of personal meaning, psychosocial development, and two measures of hope. Correlational analyses revealed significant correlations between meaning, level of psychosocial development, and hope. Although comparisons of scores on all four measures generated significant correlations, the Herth Hope Scale consistently produced higher correlations with the two other measures than the scores from the Snyder Hope Scale. These results suggest that the Herth Hope Scale, which contains a spiritual component, may relate better to constructs of meaning, purpose, and successful psychosocial development, which also reflect a sense of integrity. Educational objectives: 1) To integrate Erikson’s theory of pschosocial development with measures of personal meaning and hope. 2) To present a correlational study based on a battery of tests, including the Herth Hope Scale and the Synder Hope Scale. 3) To discuss the spiritual component of the Herth Hope Scale and its relationship to successful psychosocial development. Coping with death anxiety in times of crisis After an introduction (A. Tomer), the symposium involves presentations of four approaches to the topic of coping with death anxiety, followed by a discussion. Tom Pyszczynski (“Terror Management Theory--Perspectives on Terrorism”) presents the terror management theory (TMT) that addresses the questions: (a) why do people need self-esteem and faith in their culture? and (b) how do these needs affect social behavior? The theory posits that an answer can be based on the awareness of death and the ensuing paralyzing terror. The cultural anxiety-buffer is described and seven lines of evidence presented, followed by a discussion of implications for understanding the pressing problem of international terrorism. Victor Cicirelli, in “Older Adults’ Fear of Death: Factors in Coping”, addresses the issue of coping strategies in older age. Different strategies such as denial of death, religiosity or maintenance of purpose in life are explored on the basis of correlational findings from studies with older adults. The coping strategies are interpreted in the light of TMT and other approaches. Grafton Eliason and Adrian Tomer (“Relationships between Crisis, Spirituality, and Our Perception of Time”) focus on the construction of personal meaning via spirituality and perception of time. Possible therapeutic applications are discussed. Lisa Firestone and Joyce Cattlett (“The Fantasy Bond A Basic Defense Against Death Anxiety”) describe the Separation Theory, developed by Robert W. Firestone. The theory explains the role of death anxiety in the formation and maintenance of maladaptive defenses that play a significant part in human selfdestructiveness, on both an individual and societal level. Via the “fantasy bond”, individuals create a paranoid "wethey" view of the world. It is possible, however, to overcome these defenses, to embrace life, and to forgo hatred or insidious warfare. The discussion will focus on the concepts presented: the need to protect oneself against death anxiety, the possible destructive implications, and the examination of constructive ways to cope with death anxiety. Educational Objectives: 1) Explaining the role of death anxiety in the development and use of defense mechanisms and the implications of these defenses for human behavior. 2) Explaining constructive coping strategies in dealing with death anxiety when it becomes salient (e.g., in old age, in face of terroristic threats, etc.). Cicirelli, Ph.D., Professor of Developmental and Aging Psychology, Purdue University Lisa Firestone, Ph.D., Program and Education Director, Glendon Association Joyce Cattlett, M.Ed. Coping with death anxiety in times of crisis After an introduction (A. Tomer), the symposium involves presentations of four approaches to the topic of coping with death anxiety, followed by a discussion. Tom Pyszczynski (“Terror Management Theory--Perspectives on Terrorism”) presents the terror management theory (TMT) that addresses the questions: (a) why do people need self-esteem and faith in their culture? and (b) how do these needs affect social behavior? The theory posits that an answer can be based on the awareness of death and the ensuing paralyzing terror. The cultural anxiety-buffer is described and seven lines of evidence presented, followed by a discussion of implications for understanding the pressing problem of international terrorism. Victor Cicirelli, in “Older Adults’ Fear of Death: Factors in Coping”, addresses the issue of coping strategies in older age. Different strategies such as denial of death, religiosity or maintenance of purpose in life are explored on the basis of correlational findings from studies with older adults. The coping strategies are interpreted in the light of TMT and other approaches. Grafton Eliason and Adrian Tomer (“Relationships between Crisis, Spirituality, and Our Perception of Time”) focus on the construction of personal meaning via spirituality and perception of time. Possible therapeutic applications are discussed. Lisa Firestone and Joyce Cattlett (“The Fantasy Bond A Basic Defense Against Death Anxiety”) describe the Separation Theory, developed by Robert W. Firestone. The theory explains the role of death anxiety in the formation and maintenance of maladaptive defenses that play a significant part in human selfdestructiveness, on both an individual and societal level. Via the “fantasy bond”, individuals create a paranoid "wethey" view of the world. It is possible, however, to overcome these defenses, to embrace life, and to forgo hatred or insidious warfare. The discussion will focus on the concepts presented: the need to protect oneself against death anxiety, the possible destructive implications, and the examination of constructive ways to cope with death anxiety. Educational Objectives: 1) Explaining the role of death anxiety in the development and use of defense mechanisms and the implications of these defenses for human behavior. 2) Explaining constructive coping strategies in dealing with death anxiety when it becomes salient (e.g., in old age, in face of terroristic threats, etc.). Room A (Blackcomb) Judi Wallace, MA The Contributions of Spirituality and Religious Practices to Children’s Happiness The relations between happiness and spirituality and religious practices in children aged 8-12 years were examined. Participants included 320 students in Grades 4-6 in both public and private (faith based) schools in Western Canada and their parents. Children rated their happiness using the Subjective Happiness Scale and the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, Short Form, their spirituality using the Spiritual Well-Being Questionnaire, and their religiousness using the Religious Practice Scale adapted from the Brief Multidimensional Measurement of Religiousness/Spirituality. In addition, parents rated their children’s happiness using the Faces Scale, a single-item measure. Bivariate correlations indicated religious practices were not related to children’s happiness. Multiple regression analyses indicated that spirituality accounted for between 5-25% of the variance in children’s happiness, depending on the person rating happiness (i.e., parents vs. children), and the happiness measure utilized. ! e Personal domain of spirituality accounted for a unique amount of the variance in children’s happiness over and above the combined effect of all spirituality variables, again depending on the person rating happiness (i.e., parents vs. children), and the happiness measure utilized. Children who reported higher levels of meaning, purpose, and values in their own life reported higher levels of happiness as rated by themselves and their parents. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that spirituality accounted for between 6-28% of the variance in children’s happiness, depending on the person rating happiness (i.e., parents vs. children), and the happiness measure utilized when gender and school were controlled for. Gender did not explain any of the happiness variance but school (public vs. private) did. Limitations of the current study and future direction for research in spirituality and happiness are discussed.
