Smythe, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, University of Regina Chair - George Kunz, Ph.D., Psychology Department, Seattle University 'Notes on the Psychology of 'As If' The empirical validation of different aspects and measures of personal meaning has emerged as a significant issue in recent research in this area. The underlying aim to establish a comprehensive factual basis for theory and practice in personal meaning is certainly a laudable goal in itself. However, I argue in this paper that, in the domain of personal meaning and of human psychology more broadly, facts themselves are not sufficient, for the meanings by which we live our lives depend as much on fictions as on facts. Using Hans Vaihinger's Philosophy of 'As if' as a point of departure, I attempt to show that our constructions of personal meaning are based in fundamental ways on useful fictions, that is, on notions that we know do not correspond to reality but that we nonetheless embrace as if they did. I identify and give examples of four main types of fictions that seem especially to inform the construction of personal meaning. Explanatory fictions include generally untenable postulates about human nature that nonetheless play a role in explanatory theories of behaviour; metaphorical fictions are attempts to understand something unknown in our experience in terms of something more concrete and familiar; mythological fictions appeal to archetypal and supernatural factors underlying our experience; and narrative fictions include the various ways in which we attempt to cast our experience in storied form. In each case, the revelatory and emancipatory potential of the fiction is in no way diminished by treating it as a fiction. Some implications of this for theories of personal meaning are discussed. The meaning narrative may or may not be explicit. It is well, as part of a narrative therapy to help people articulate and embrace an explicit meaning narrative. Such a narrative implies a committed set of beliefs about life itself. Such beliefs not only direct but obligate persons to act consistently with the values inscribed within that meaning narrative. In a word, belief obligates action consistent with itself. This argument will be supported with reference to the work of J.F. Lyotard, Ludwig Wittgenstein and the radical orthodox theologian John Millbank. The meaning of a psychiatric act is spread between curing the patient and helping the patient. Many times the road to cure is not the same as the road to help. In the dyad patient-psychiatrist, two meanings develop: the meaning given to the therapeutic encounter by the patient enmeshed in transference, and the meaning given by the psychiatrist enmeshed in countertransference. The relationship patient-psychiatrist has several parts in it: clinical, financial, boundary confinement, and the relation at the unconscious fantasy level. All of these parts bring in separate meanings that are explored in this paper. Beginning from the premise that a scientific approach requires validity and of independent testability before meanings are assumed, Californian researchers studied years ago what came to celebrity under the name of “The Rat Race” (a brief description of the experiment is included in this paper). At that time, a major determinant of the behavior of animals exposed to a stressor was acknowledged to be the inside mental representation of the outside environment. For each individual, the very particular way the outside world is mirrored inside determines the rate of success in the attempts to master the environment. For human beings, the internal representation of the world includes aspects like life style, culture, religious belief, modern sexual values, etc. This internal mirroring is the stone that stays at the heart of the mental machine, relating the person to the symbols of the outside world, as they become represented inside. The interplay of genetic preprogramming, neural connections in the inside world and the perceptual feedback from the outside world determine the discovery, creation and then adjustment of the meanings brought about by the psychiatric act.
