Knowing the God We Serve
There are a lot of movies out these days, but let's be honest. Most of them are pretty forgettable. There are a few, however, that catch our attention because they have such unexpected twists. I'm thinking about the 1982 movie starring Robert Redford named "Sneakers." Or, for a slightly younger crowd there is the 1999 movie starring Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment entitled "The Sixth Sense." Remember how surprised we were when we suddenly realized that the psychiatrist-Oops! I don't want to give it away for anyone that hasn't seen it yet. But you get what I mean. We remember these movies because they took us by surprise. They were unpredictable and yet satisfying.

Recovery entails changing those beliefs, the most damaging of which is that we're not worthy of love and respect - that we're somehow inadequate, inferior, or just not enough. This is internalized shame. Last year, I published a blog, Codependency is based on Fake Facts explaining the effects of this programming, which squelches our true self. Romantic love that's mutual can for a brief time liberate our natural, true self. We get a glimpse of what it would be like to live unshackled by shame and fear - why love feels so wonderful.

Chances are that this person isn't even aware of the effect he or she is having on you. This happens often when someone borrows money from and you don't know how to say, no. After giving the money to him or her, you can't stop worrying if this person is going to pay you back. Here you can apply the lesson. Don't judge. After all, everything is in the past. You already gave the money away. Let it go and enjoy the now.

Last week I was offered another lesson at the indoor pool where I swim. Sunday, it seems, has become everyone's favorite day. The pool was packed. Lane designations are important when it's crowded, and two lanes are reserved for slower, leisurely swimmers--like me.
So, I was in the first leisure lane with two other swimmers, while another very slow swimmer was in the second lane. Things were flowing well until three guys got into the second leisure lane with the slower swimmer. They were much faster and kept running into him--literally.
