Winlink Express and VARA HF modem software over PowerSDR KE9NS v2.8.0 and the Flex-5000 SDR
NOTE: Best viewed in 1080p or 4k
This is a quick video showing successful operation of Winlink and VARA HF modem software, using a Flex-5000 running PowerSDR ke9ns v2.8 software to send an email over HF radio.
A "Virtual Audio Cable" (VAC) is used to link the Audio between PowerSDR and Winlink/Vara software. I use Voicemeeter Banana drivers.
A CAT com port pair is used to link the PowerSDR and Winlink/Vara software for frequency, mode, power level, etc. I use VspMgr for creating COM port pairs.
PowerSDR VOX is used to PTT the radio. If you do not have VOX capability, try using the COM port PTT. Do not try to use CAT enabled PTT operation as its too slow.
More details of the Winlink and Vara HF setup on my webpage:
https://ke9ns.com/flexpage.html (CTRL F Search for "Winlink express").
There are the download links to Winlink and Vara HF as well.
I have also successfully used Winlink and VARA FM modem over 2m using my Flex-5000 and the FM data mode.
Download PowerSDR ke9ns v2.8.0 from this website as well

PowerSDR ke9ns v2.8.0 Recording features
Recording features of PowerSDR ke9ns v2.8.0:
1) QuickAudio (received bandpass audio), Saved as WAV, and optionally MP3. File names are indexed with a sequence#, time, date, Freq, and mode.
2) Voice keyer recordings including recording CW that you can playback in any mode as a ID. A total of 6 pre-recorded messages: Voice ID, CW ID, Reply, CQ, VK1, VK2
3) "Memory" Date and Time schedule setup for MP3 recording.
4) Full Sample Rate IQ recordings (audio) of the entire Panadapter.
The Full sample rate recording allows you to playback (using VFOB) and hear all the signals that were originally recorded from VFOA (example: listen to any signal within 192khz SR from the recording).
Sorry, Radio audio has an echo because I accidentally left VAC1 on and recorded the audio twice.

Full bi-directional Audio and Full Remote Desktop with PowerSDR using only AnyDesk
0:00 - Example demonstration of Full 2-way Bi-Directional Audio, and Full Remote Desktop operation running PowerSDR ke9ns v2.8.0 using ONLY AnyDesk, allowing to you transmit Mic audio as well as Receive audio from anywhere with an internet connection.
This Video was recorded with OBS Studio on a 2008 Macbook Pro laptop running Win10, with a wireless "Corsair Virtuoso" PC gamer headset, running "Equalizer APO" (setup for 6khz wide audio).
I remotely connect to my Ryzen Desktop running Win11 connected to my Flex-5000 and PowerSDR ke9ns v2.8 with Voicemeeter virtual audio cables.
AnyDesk provides very good Video and Audio for the bandwidth, and is "Free for personal use".
Much simpler setup & smoother operation than RDP, Teamviewer, or Zoom.
AnyDesk allows for full remote control of PowerSDR, and 1-way hi-fi audio.
But did you know that once your logged into your Radio PC Desktop, you can then run another instance of AnyDesk to log back into your Remote Laptop, and now you have full 2-way hi-fi audio.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
0:15 - AnyDesk needs to be installed on both Remote Laptop and Radio PC. Setup AnyDesk so you can Log into your Desktop from the Remote Laptop, and allow your Desktop to Log into your Remote Laptop.
NOTE: I installed the free Voicemeeter banana audio drivers on the Radio PC only. You can use any Virtual audio cable program, and you dont need it on the Remote Laptop side.
If everything is already setup you can skip to step 1b)
0:35 - Remote PC (1 time setup):
0:46 - 1) AnyDesk on Remote Laptop: Setup Audio "Transmission" = Headset Mic, "Output" = Headset speaker.
0:57 - 2) Remote Laptop Windows "Sound" Playback default = Headset speaker, Recording default = Headset Mic.
1:09 - 3) Log into the Radio PC. The Top line of the AnyDesk window has a Shield. Click on the shield and check "Transmit Sound". (I FORGOT TO INCLUDE THIS IN THE VIDEO)
1:18 - Radio PC (1 time setup):
1:22 - 1a) Radio PC "PowerSDR" Set VAC1 DirectSound: IN = Voicemeeter Output, OUT=Voicemeeter Aux Input.
1:55- 2a) Radio PC Windows "Sound" Playback default = Voicemeeter Input, Recording default = Voicemeeter Aux Output.
2:11 - 3a) AnyDesk on Radio PC: Setup Audio "Transmission" Voicemeeter Aux Output, "Output" Voicemeeter input.
2:32 - 4a) Log into the your Remote Laptop. The Top line of the AnyDesk window has a Shield. Click on the shield and check "Transmit Sound". (I FORGOT TO INCLUDE THIS IN THE VIDEO)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Operation, Sitting in front of your Remote Laptop:
1b) Remote Laptop: AnyDesk Log into your Radio PC. The Top line of the AnyDesk window has a Shield. Click on the shield and check "Transmit Sound". (I FORGOT TO INCLUDE THIS IN THE VIDEO)
2b) Launch PowerSDR on your Radio PC and Activate VAC1.
2:32 - 3b) Viewing your RADIO PC Desktop, Run a new instance of AnyDesk from your RADIO PC, and Log into your Remote Laptop. (This is the part that gives you MIC audio back to PowerSDR).
2:36 - 4b) Click "Accept" button of the AnyDesk Chat window that pops up on your Remote Laptop. You can minimize this Chat window.
2:39 - 5b) Viewing your RADIO PC Desktop, you will now see a small window appear showing your Remote Laptop (its a crazy recursive looking window). Minimize this small window (BUT DO NOT CLOSE OR END IT).
3:00 - 6b) Click on the PowerSDR MUX button. You should now have Mic audio back to PowerSDR.
Setup- General- Hardware Config- SpaceBar Latch ON/OFF. This will allow you to use the Spacebar to PTT the radio.
I suggest to go and download "Equalizer APO". This will create a permanent EQ built into your windows PC and really improve the sound of any PC gamer headset. You may need to search YouTube for help on how to set it up, but its worth it.

Heathkit HW-5400 with DDS and Filter Mods by KE9NS
Audio sample of my original 1985 Heathkit HW-5400 2.4khz crystal filter, and my mods that added a custom cpu controlled DDS LO board , and a custom cpu controlled DDS IF BFO board, and 4 & 6khz TX/RX crystal filters. I programmed the keypad to not only allow direct frequency entry, but allow RX/TX filter selection. The IF shift knob now allows RX and/or TX IF shift. The DDS is driven by a TCXO
The operators on 3.630 are operating 6khz wide hence the beautiful RX audio

PowerSDR ke9ns Full duplex SO2R WSJT-X with a single Flex-5000 /w RX2 and 2 antennas.
This is an "addendum" to my last SO2R video.
The main difference is to show that I am able to receive on 1 band while simultaneously transmitting on a 2nd band with no extra filters, Just 2 separate antennas.
This demonstration shows Flex-5000 (with RX2) SO2R operation on both 80m (G5RV) and 20m (Mosley TA_33 jr yagi) simultaneously. Working WSJT-X FT8 SO2R

PowerSDR ke9ns Flex-5000 RX2 SO2R WSJT-X configuration example.
Please select at least 1080p resolution when playing this video.
This video is an example of how to configure the Flex-5000 with 2nd Receiver (RX2) and PowerSDR ke9ns v2.8.0.210 for SO2R operation (Single Operator 2 Radios).
The video is 2 HD monitors wide (thats 3840 x 1080) so its best to watch it 4K res, or pull the window across 2 monitors in HD. Sorry for the low audio level.
SO2R conditions:
(1) Flex-5000 with 2 independent receivers and 3 Antenna ports (full duplex capable, but both RX shut off during transmit in this example)
(1) Logging program
(2) Instances of WSJT-X (both running FT8 for simplicity)
(2) Separate bands. (20m and 40m)
(2) Separate Antennas. (TA-33Jr and G5RV)
Technically you could run PowerSDR and keep the Receivers running (full duplex) during transmit, but only if you have contest style external band filters to prevent signal overload, or your running with antennas and bands far enough apart to prevent overload.
Actually..... See my 2.8.0.213 video where I show the Flex-5000 running SO2R with full duplex
0:00 - Intro
0:10 - Setup of first (standard) WSJT-X VFOA

PowerSDR ke9ns 3dPanafall v2.8.0.150
3dPanafall or 3DPanadapter (WS7M had the original idea)
(make sure to set the resolution to 1080p)
How it works: Real-time Panadapter spectrum data is presented at the front, and older data (History) is shift back into the screen (with a 3D effect). The oldest data falls off the very back of the display. The History length depends on the FPS setpoint.
A "Work in progress". Stay Tuned
