We just got home with our second load of hair sheep...20 new sheep in all. There are Katahdin, Dorper, and Blackbelly ewes with a lot of babies who have the same dad that was a Katahdin Ram. We are so excited about our new sheep.

Inflation is on the rise with nobody in power willing to do what is necessary to stop it and reverse it. We have not had sound money since 1913, and have been on a very predictable decline every since. So what can we do about it? We can do some gardening. Every little bit helps. During WWII we had Victory Gardens. Nearly 80 years later we find ourselves needing to grow our Survival Gardens. Every tomato, carrot, tomato you can grow is one somebody else doesn't need to grow for you. Every pound of food you can put back is one pound you don't need to worry about having to feed yourself or your children. Even this late in the year, start growing something, and don't stop. Turnips are a very under rated root and green. I have always loved eating turnips and turnip greens. Something about them just feels like home. These are a great food to grow, and very easy. Now we didn't get the greens out of these turnips due to neglect and the bugs, but we got over 20 pounds of long lasting, tasty roots. The health benefits of this plant are numerous. Add production to your tomatoes by partially burying the bottom of your vines in order to produce more roots.

Here I am showing how Tomato Plants can develop roots up the vine, anywhere it touches soil. A benefit of this is to understand you can create a larger root system that produces a larger plant with more fruit. This is us feeding and watering and collecting eggs. And of course we have the dogs in there too.

Here at My Homestead Education, we love our Muscovy Ducks, and we got 3 new beautiful ducks to introduce to our breeding stock. We brought in one new Drake and 2 new Hens. As with many animals such as chickens, there is a pecking order that must be established. As you can see here, it seems tuff, and it is for the new guys, but in the end, they all get along just fine.

I collected basil seed today and there are thousands of those little seeds.

This was our first time harvesting garlic. I should point out, we planted late and did not really know what we were doing. You should plant garlic out in the fall/early winter. We did not, but still wanted garlic, so here it is. When you aren't sure what to do, just do it and learn as you go. I of course try to learn what I need to do, but last fall, I wasn't thinking about this summer. So this spring, when I was thinking about growing garlic, I found out I was several months behind, but I still got some garlic. Not any show stoppers, but I took a few whole heads of garlic for a couple of bucks, and grew 5-10 times that. What do you do when there are wildfires, and toxic levels of smoke blankets everything around? In this video I go thru a couple of things that will help your animals during times like this. Heavy smoke for long periods of time is dangerous to your health, and the health of your animals. Poultry have very sensitive respiratory systems that are easily compromised, whether it is too much dust or, as in our case right now, too much smoke. The wildfires on the west coast, including one just 10 miles from our homestead, has blanketed most of the United States in smoke, and the closer you are to the fires, the heavier the smoke. We have been in an unhealthy to dangerous level of smoke now for over a week, and we are doing everything we can to help our poultry, sheep and calves. Fall is suddenly upon us, and it is bringing winter with it, so it is time to harvest everything we have left in the garden and get it put back into the pantry. This year has been, well, interesting to say the least. 2020 has been the year of the crazy, and our garden is no exception. We planted late (mid to late July) and our sheep got in and ate all the peppers nearly down to the ground. We have enjoyed a lot of lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and squash throughout the late part of the summer, but we needed to get all of our garden harvested. In fact, the next day we had snow and sleet, and the lows were in the upper 20's.
