Overview
Spectators will only miss the 2022 BMW X6 M if the oddly styled, ungodly powerful SUV whizzes by in a blur. Powered by a twin-turbocharged V-8 powertrain with over 600 hp. coupled with a rear-shift all-wheel drive system for maximum traction, the chances of this hefty M-powered machine appearing and disappearing in the blink of an eye are high. Meanwhile, its passengers will indulge in a cozy and luxuriously furnished cabin. Unfortunately, the flimsy bodies won't appreciate its tough ride, and the sloping rear roofline sacrifices storage space compared to the boxier BMW X5 M. While BMW began the polarizing fastback SUV trend with the original X6, copycats like Porsche Cayenne Coupe and Mercedes-Benz. The AMG GLE-class has joined the party. The 2022 X6 M may not be to everyone's taste, but it's a midsize luxury SUV that's likely to grab attention and is guaranteed to generate excitement.
What's new for 2022?
The 2022 X6 M has received very modest changes. These include the addition of advanced Bluetooth technology to every model and the removal of wireless device charging from the list of standard features. Other minor changes include a new Dravit Gray metallic body paint, Silverstone Extended Merino leather upholstery and revised option packages.
Prices and which one to buy
X6 M: $110,395
It's hard to see how less practicality can lead to a higher price. However, the 2022 X6 M costs $3,500 more than its boxy X5 M counterpart. We prefer a less expensive body style, but the X6 certainly gets more attention. Regardless, the Competition package is a must. Not only does it put out 617 horsepower - 17 more than usual - but it also has better standard equipment. This includes a sports exhaust, an exclusive Track mode, and 22-inch rear wheels (versus 21-inch). The Competition package also offers nicer leather upholstery and knee pads on the center console to reduce stress during tight turns.
Engine, transmission and performance
Powered by the same raucous engine as the BMW M5 sedan, the X6 M is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8. It puts out 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque in natural state and 617 hp. with competition package. The engine is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission that powers a dynamic all-wheel drive system. This transmission can be ordered to distribute power to all four wheels for maximum traction, or send more power to the rear for sharper handling. In addition to selectable driving modes, including customizable options that can be activated via steering wheel buttons, the X6 M even has adjustable brake pedal feedback. The BMW also has adaptive dampers and a set of 21-inch wheels as standard, but a pair of 22-inch wheels can be fitted in the rear (these come standard on the X6 M Competition). We drove the X6 M Competition and praised its lightning-fast acceleration, stunning cornering grip, and strong brakes without fading. While it rode smoothly and steadily on the highway, its large wheels and stiff springs contributed to the rocky ride over rough roads.
Interior, comfort and cargo
Sportiness and luxury collide inside the X6 M, which boasts carbon fiber accents and standard leather upholstery. There's also no shortage of high-tech features thanks to the 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and large head-up display. They are accompanied by such subtleties as external interior lighting, front seat massage with heated and cooled surfaces, heated rear seats and much more. The interior storage compartment is highlighted by a lockable drawer under the center console and a utility box in the center console.

Overview
Think station wagons aren't cool? The breathtaking takeoffs of the 2022 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo will leave you wondering. Sure, a single ride in a Tesla Model S can have the same effect, but Teslas are cool, vans shouldn't. As an alternative to the long-roof Taycan sedan, the Turismo versions inherit an advanced electrical architecture and an innovative two-speed transmission that delivers repetitive, incredible acceleration. While Porsche's electric car recipe doesn't include some traditional ingredients (read: single-pedal driving) and can't match the range of the longest-range Tesla, the Taycan twins are far more enjoyable to drive. Consider that the station wagon has more rear seat and trunk space than the sedan, and that could almost make up for the higher asking price. Still, the 2022 Taycan Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo are useful family hauling tools and a great way to make wagon haters look like fools. They are also Editors' Choice winners.
What's new for 2022?
The 2022 Taycan Cross Turismo benefits from a small number of updates. One of the coolest changes is the ability to self-park without the presence of a person behind the wheel, which can be done using a smartphone with a new remote parking feature. Infotainment improvements include a better operating system, improved voice commands, and Android Auto finally joining Apple CarPlay. Thanks to Porsche's Paint to Sample program, customers can choose their own colors, including those of classic models from the 1990s. The 22 Taycan Cross Turismo also benefits from improved temperature management and charging features, which Porsche says help reduce charging times. Also joining the lineup is the new 590-hp GTS Sport Turismo, which gets rid of the regular model's body cladding, lowers the sedan's ride height, and features unique styling cues and chassis tweaks.

The Cross Turismo lineup matches the regular Taycan, except there's no rear-wheel drive model, and station wagon prices are slightly higher than sedan prices. However, we recommend the Cross Turismo 4S with 562 hp. Like all models, it comes standard with all-wheel drive and adjustable air suspension. The long-roof Taycan goes on sale this summer and gets free Electrify America charging for three years. We also recommend using the Porsche Experience Center for an additional, albeit worthwhile, amount.
Engine, transmission and performance
Naturally, the Taycan Cross Turismo is purely electrically powered and shares the same chassis and other components as its sedan. However, the station wagon is offered only with all-wheel drive. Power is provided by two electric motors totaling 469 to 750 horsepower, depending on trim level. One of the most interesting elements of the Taycan is its two-speed gearbox on the rear axle, a first for an electric vehicle. In our testing, it helped the Taycan Turbo S hit 60 mph in 2.4 seconds, making it one of the fastest cars we've ever tested. What's more, unlike conventional electric vehicles that run slower as the battery drains, the Taycan delivers consistent performance. Our first ride in the 469hp Taycan Cross Turismo 4. demonstrated its efficient acceleration, maneuverability and reliable brakes.
Range, charging and battery life
When we first talked about the Taycan Cross Turismo, we predicted it would have a range of over 300 miles. However, that was before the EPA released its range ratings for the Taycan sedan, which is currently listed at 227 miles with the larger 83.7 kWh battery that each wagon uses.

Overview
The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLS63, with its powerful twin-turbocharged V-8 engine under the hood, takes the performance of the standard GLS-class SUV to a whole new level. This hot rod has competitors such as the BMW X7 M50i and Cadillac Escalade V-series. Sport-tuned air suspension comes as standard and improves its handling on the road, albeit with a much firmer ride. That doesn't mean the GLS63 isn't luxurious. Its leather interior is trimmed with high-quality materials, it is spacious and extremely comfortable - at least in the first two rows. A plethora of technical features come standard, with even more advanced features such as semi-autonomous driving available as an option.

The mighty GLS63 is virtually unchanged for 2022. We were worried it wouldn't happen at all this year due to supply chain issues that Mercedes has reported are delaying production. But we've confirmed that the GLS63 is back in business and ready to wow your family with its 603bhp twin-turbo V-8 engine.

While the GLS63's starting price is in the six-figure range, we still offer a few options that the whole family is sure to love. First, the Warmth and Comfort package is a good package for those living in northern climates as it adds heated door panels, heated armrests and a heated center console. We also offer the Energizing package, which includes an in-cabin aroma diffuser and the Acoustic Comfort package, and adds increased cabin insulation for a quieter interior. Mercedes-AMG also offers plenty of standalone features to grab your attention, including crazy 23-inch multi-spoke forged wheels that look just perfect framed by the GLS63's beefy wheel arches.
Engine, transmission and performance
Under the hood of the GLS63 is a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that develops a whopping 603 horsepower via a 48-volt hybrid system. All-wheel drive is standard, as is a nine-speed automatic transmission and air suspension. We were blown away by the 2021 GLS63's performance on our test track, as it outperformed several hot sports cars we've recently tested, hitting 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. By comparison, the old GLS63, which made just 577 horsepower, hit 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. As impressed as we are with the GLS's acceleration, we can't say the same about its driving dynamics. The ride is stiff, especially on the optional 23-inch wheels, but that stiffness doesn't translate to a sense of precision when cornering. The body of the GLS wobbles more than expected, although it still offers enough grip to have fun on a twisty road.
Fuel economy and real MPG
EPA estimates the GLS63's fuel economy is 14 mpg city and 18 mpg highway. On our 200-mile highway fuel economy test route, the GLS63 delivered a respectable 22 mpg; the GLS63's archrival, the BMW X7 M50i, gets 24 mpg in the same test. Interior, comfort and cargo
Three rows of seats and a slightly sportier interior styling compared to Benz's GLS class set the GLS63 apart from powerful two-row SUVs such as the BMW X5 M and Audi RS Q8. Like these competitors, the GLS63 is superbly equipped inside. Soft leather covers almost every square inch of the cabin, while non-leather areas are trimmed with real wood and tastefully applied chrome; buttons and knobs have a rich metal finish. Front-seat passengers can enjoy a massage as they race down the Interstate, and there's plenty of room for passengers in the second row, which can also be equipped with heated seats and power sunshades. The third row of seats is cramped for adults, but perfect for kids.

As much as we love the look of the two-door 90, the four-door 110 is more practical for most buyers. The base transmission of the P300 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 296 hp. - Seems bouncy enough for everyday driving, so we'd stick with it; those planning to tackle some serious off-road hurdles may find the optional six-cylinder or V-8 engine to be the best choice. We'd suggest the SE trim level as it adds a number of desirable features to the Defender's specs, including 19-inch aluminum wheels, automatic high beams, 12-way power front seats and a digital display. Land Rover offers several accessory packages, each of which complements the Defender with special themed features. There are plenty of personalization options available as well, but we'll leave the customization to you.

The Defender is powered by a standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Of course, every model is equipped with all-wheel drive and locking differentials for rough terrain. The Defender is also available with a 3.0-liter inline-six engine that uses an electric supercharger and a 48-volt hybrid system. Buyers looking for extra performance can opt for the 518-horsepower supercharged V-8, which we estimate will propel the Defender to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds. Unlike its predecessor, the Defender is a unibody instead of a body-on-frame, and it replaces the old solid axles with a fully independent suspension. The base suspension uses coil springs, but can be upgraded with air springs that allow ride height adjustment. The Defender has 11.5 inches of ground clearance and 35 inches of fording capability that exceeds both the Jeep Wrangler's maximum ground clearance and its fording ability.
Fuel economy and real MPG
EPA fuel economy estimates for various Defender models are fairly similar, no matter what's under the hood. The 90 four-cylinder gets 18 mpg city and 21 mpg highway. Move to a six-cylinder engine and the 90's city rating drops to 17 mpg, but the highway rating rises to 22. The six-cylinder 110 has the same ratings as the six-cylinder 90. Since V-8 models may not be available this year, we suggest sticking with the mid-range GT53, which offers plenty of horsepower and a satisfying driving experience. Under the hood of both the GT43 and GT53 is a robust inline-six engine with a turbocharger, intercooler, electric supercharger and a small electric motor. After stopping, the electric motor and supercharger fill a short period of time before the turbocharger gives full boost. The 3.0-liter engine, which makes 429 horsepower in the GT53, breaks necks whenever you touch the accelerator. In our testing, the GT53 with the conventional nine-speed automatic sprinted to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, and its sports suspension provided smooth, responsive cornering and sports car levels of grip. We haven't tested the new 2021 GT43, however.
Fuel economy and real MPG
With such extreme performance, it's no wonder the Mercedes-AMG GT sedan is thirsty, but its EPA fuel economy ratings aren't as terrible as you might expect, rated at 19/24 mpg city/highway. For more information on GT fuel economy, visit the EPA website.
Interior, comfort and cargo
While much of the GT's interior is the same as Mercedes' other four-door coupe, the CLS, the large console between its seats appears to have been taken from a GT sports car. It's a little intrusive, but it gives the feel of a sporty cockpit. The interior design is overall futuristic and visually exciting, but some of the ergonomics take some getting used to. It's also a four-seater, which can be a problem for some families. Aggressively padded sport seats are standard and comfortable, while a thick flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminum trim and a digital instrument cluster are in keeping with the sedan's high-performance mission. Build quality is exceptional and materials are in line with AMG prices. It's a hatchback, and the GT coupe's rear seats fold down for more cargo space.
