Costa Rica vs New Zealand World Cup 2022 Playoff Full VAR cause New Zealand to lose the match
All Whites coach Danny Hay has claimed Fifa “let us down’' after the All Whites suffered the wrong end of some crucial refereeing decisions in the 1-0 World Cup playoff loss to Costa Rica.
Chris Wood had a goal disallowed and a penalty shout ruled out and Kosta Barbarouses copped a second half red card in Doha on Wednesday morning (NZ time).
Hay hit out at the post-match press conference, criticising the appointment of match officials from the United Arab Emirates and Qatar without European competitions experience.
Asked if he felt let down, he said: “100 per cent’’, saying he thought the All Whites had not got the same quality of officials as Australia and Peru, who had a largely Europe-based team officiating in Monday night’s playoff.
“They have let us down in putting somebody in charge who has clearly not officiated at this sort of level.’’
The Australia-Peru game – won by the Socceroos on penalties – had Slovenia’s Slavko Vinčić as referee with two fellow Slovenes as his assistants and two South Africans as fourth and fifth officials.
The New Zealand-Costa Rica match officials operate largely in the Asian confenderation. They have refereed in recent regional finals, but lack the European experience of Vinčić and his team.
All Whites captain Winston Reid – who was booked for his vehement reaction to Kosta Barbarouses’ second-half red card – also felt the appointments weren’t “good enough for a big match like this’’.
"My general concern, I wish Fifa for a game like this would have given us someone more experienced. But that's the way it is,’’ he said on Sky TV.
“There were some decisions that just didn't go our way, unfortunately. But that's part of football and that's what happened today. It's just disappointing."
Meanwhile, Chris Wood was also fuming afterwards, saying some of the decisions that went against the All Whites were “extremely harsh’’.
But referee Mohamed was alerted by the VAR to check the screen after protests by Costa Rica about an alleged foul by Garbett on Óscar Duarte in the buildup.
After a protracted review, the Dubai referee ruled out the goal, much to the chagrin of the All Whites.
Wood said in a pitchside television interview that “some decisions went against us that I thought were extremely harsh’’.
He said “refs need to trust their instincts at times’’ but he was generally pleased with the All Whites’ performance and felt the display boded well for the future of the young side.
Wood felt the All Whites were “the dominant side’’ in terms of the possession and shooting statistics.
Left-back Liberato Cacace said later on Sky TV that he felt the All Whites “could have had two penalties in that game’’ and goalkeeper Oli Sail also told Sky the ruling that Garbett had fouled his rival was “so soft’’.
Former All Whites striker Fred de Jong called it “a travesty’’ and former All Whites keeper Jacob Spoonley slated it as a “shocking decision’’ with “minute contact’’ between Garbett and his Costa Rican opponent.
The All Whites trailled 1-0 at halftime after former Arsenal striker Joel Campbell scored for Costa Rica on the third minute after a concentration lapse by the Kiwi defence.
But the New Zealanders bounced back to dominate the first half with Wood causing problems for the Costa Rican rearguard.
Wood had a penalty shout disallowed by VAR just before his overturned goal. He remonstrated with Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas after he hit the deck in the penalty area.

Australia vs Peru World Cup 2022 Playoff Full Penalties Shootout
AUSTRALIA have beaten Peru on penalties to reach the World Cup.
Edison Flores hit the post with a header in extra time for the Peruvians in the best chance of the 120 minutes.
But it was the Socceroos who emerged victorious in the shootout thanks to the gutsiest of calls from manager Graham Arnold.
With one minute left, Arnold decided to haul off former Brighton goalkeeper Matt Ryan and replace him with penalty specialist Andrew Redmayne.
And his dancing routine would eventually pay dividends as he saved from Alex Valera to send the Aussies to the World Cup.
Australia will now join world champions France, Christian Eriksen's Denmark and Tunisia in Group D at the World Cup in Qatar.
All three of those teams will pose more of a threat than Peru did tonight, but do not bet against the Aussies pulling off a surprise.
Denmark and France were both in a group with Australia at the last World Cup, as were Peru.
France beat them 2-1, thanks to a Paul Pogba lob that broke Aussie hearts, and an Antoine Griezmann penalty.
While the Australians put Denmark to the sword in a close 1-1 draw, in which Mile Jedinak scored an equalising penalty for the Socceroos.
There were a number of great performances left out on the pitch tonight from both sets of players.
But there is only one man who could take the SunSport man of the match award, and that is Andrew Redmayne.
Despite only playing for 4 minutes, and the penalty shootout, his dancing heroics is what this game will be remembered for.
While Redmayne and Australia will take all the plaudits for tonight, and rightly so, it was so close to being Peru's night.
Edison Flores hit the post with a downwards header in extra time, which would have surely won it for his side.
But there are fine, fine margins when it comes to games of this importance and of this calibre.
They will be sorely missed from this World Cup, but will be back fighting for their place in the 2026 edition we are sure.
That victory sees Australia qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar!
They have now qualified for 5 consecutive World Cups, and it wouldn't have felt the same for many without them in Qatar.
They had to overcome a stubborn Peruvian side, who did not concede many chances, and did excellently to hold their nerve in the penalty shootout.
They had some great performances from individuals on the pitch, such as Mabil, Wright, Mooy and Boyle, but it was their overall defensive stability that won them the game, as well as a moment of magic from Andrew Redmayne.
Either team could have won it today, with it being such a tight-knit affair, but it will certainly be good to see the Socceroos in Qatar.
What a penalty shootout that was!
Well, the 120 minutes could have certainly been more entertaining, but penalty shootouts do not come much better than that.
Substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne is a special breed, he danced about on his goal line like a popcorn over a hot fire.
But his unique technique paid off as he made an excellent save to deny fellow substitute Valera from the spot.
He is the Australian hero tonight, and that performance will be remembered for a long, long time.

Soccer Aid 2022 England vs World XI Extended Highlights Goals 12 June 2022
Soccer Aid is coming to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park! (And it promises to be the best Soccer Aid yet).
Usain Bolt makes his return as captain of the Soccer Aid World XI team, competing at the London Stadium ten years on from his gold medal heroics at London 2012.
One Direction singer Liam Payne will captain the England team. He will be joined by Lucien Laviscount (Emily in Paris) and comedian Alex Brooker.
Tom Grennan, Chunkz and Martin Compston will lace up their boots once again to play alongside footballing legends Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Fara Williams Joe Cole and Patrice Evra.
Harry Redknapp, the winning manager of the last three Soccer Aid matches (as manager of the rest of the world) - has switched sides to manage the 3 Lions. Harry says, “I know England can finally win”.
And incredibly, as an added bonus, Robbie Williams has agreed to sing his hit single Angels for the first time in a long time.
This is an unmissable experience and of course, all proceeds go to charity; money raised from this year’s game helps UNICEF provide vaccines, fight malnutrition and provide safety for children.
