Atomkraft [Rare Demo 1986] Including Unreleased Tracks
One for the fans of Atomkraft with songs here you've probably heard but with the exception of two new versions "Future Warriors and Warzone" with Ian Swift on vocals.
I dont know why but in 1986 the EP Album "Queen Of Death" wasn't released as a full album? their was talk that the format of an EP was louder than that of a full album due to their being less grooves taken up on the vinyl disk i know this to be true about records but wether this was the real reason or not i dont know.
On this tape cassette from my collection that i was given after the recording of the album their were seven songs and the two that did not end up on the final album were future warriors and warzone, but my classical guitar piece was included so that would not make sense that the album was kept as an EP for sonic purposes as the two songs were heavy metal tracks and not a classical acoustic piece as was "Mode 3". I'm wondering whether this rare tape is a pre-mix of what would become the final album.. i think the mix may be slightly different, but certainly the guitars are turned way up on all tracks which is what i would have insisted on having been dissapointed with the debut album mix of future warriors.
It's a shame that whoever in their wisdom didn't want to include future warriors and warzone in the final album tracklisting! as swifty's vocals are excellent on these tracks, and it's also a shame that in 1986 this revitalised Atomkraft with two new band members and a new producer didn't continue on because this was a winning formula. But with the band settling back as a five piece by 1988 we probably sounded the best we ever did anyway, typically with Atomkraft although we had become a great live band.. this final lineup didnt make it to record the last album "Atomised" (aptly titled). The tape cassette itself has on the (A) side Atomkraft and the (B) side a band called Well Well Well, who i thought sounded great and i assumed that this tape was some sort of neat records promotion featuring two of its top bands?.. Neat records contact info is printed on the tape sleeve.. so thats my assumption.

Side Two

Underground Newcastle was a compilation album released by Sonic Blue
Records in 1992 it featured the north east of england's best new and upcoming
bands. The bands at this time in the whole of the UK were the primordial soup
of what would become Britpop, it is a time period between the Stone Roses,
Acid House and onto Oasis and Blur a natural phenomenon that arises in
youth culture when music begins moving in a different direction. So while
grunge had become mainstream then new young bands in the UK were
finding their inspiration from where it all came from "the 1960's", all of
these new bands were far more psychedelic than the britpop bands that came
after which were more mid sixties in style.
Ozric Tentacles, Ride, Revolver, Stone Roses, Oasis, Blur, Madchester, Baggy,
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Brian Jonestown Massacre.

In 2007 and after two years of recording gigging and rehearsing i knew it was time to end Agankast i suggested to Alan and Ciaran that they should replace me and continue on with the name which they did for a few months then created a new band with a different name, the lads were a bit perplexed at the time wondering why i was giving up the band but i knew how these things worked and i was'nt prepared to spend the next 10 years slogging away when it was obvious that the music industry was over. Thats not to say you gave in!.. just that for me personally i feel that if im in or create a band thats excellent and no one comes knocking at the door with management or record deal offers after two long years then whats the point? i may as well go off travelling again.. which is exactly what i did.
I knew the lads were young and going off to university etc so their journey was just starting and so i put the pressure on myself to try and come up with not just the best Agankast album but the best heavy metal album i could write!.. and it was going to be called "Walking With Angels Running With Devils", a double album of songs, disc one being all of my stuff and disc two "Running with Devils" both mine and alans songs.
I always thought of agankast as maybe a "Heavy Metal Led Zeppelin" that was what i had in mind from the start.. so for example our videos i would utilise the many old castle ruins in the area acting out as a great video backdrop for our music video's.. like led zeppelins "song remains the same" film. I did say to alan once that it would be great if we could do a video of us all galloping on white horses which he thought was a great idea as he knew somebody who kept horses, the music video of this never happened fortunately as we probably would have looked hilarious with none of us having ever rode a horse before.
Horses aside i began writing and recording the last album a double album to boot.. and it nearly killed me doing it, guitarist ciaran was let loose on all the tracks and alans vocals were confident and controlled and my trademark orchestral guitar parts the whole thing worked out really well. It took a few months to complete and when done i remember burning it to a cd lying back on my settee and listening to the whole album, when it finished i knew i had done it, it sounded like "where i'm from" the countryside with its ancient ruins, it sounded metal and zeppelinish. This final Agankast album had taken it out of me which i knew it would.. but i also knew that i wanted the band to go out in style. I'm confident that this album and Agankast's music will be unearthed and recognised in the future, the future is a long time.. so thats a long time to allow for Agankast to get discovered.
